Fig. 17 is a section taken along line XVII-XVII of FIG. 14.
The wheel shown in fig. 1 and 2 comprise a wheel hub 10 of ordinary construction provided with a central receiving opening 11 for the axle, an outer cylindrical wall 12 and a circumferential flange 13 at one end of the axle. this wall. The flange 13 is provided with a series of holes 14 distributed over the entire circumference and each of which receives a bolt 15 having a fixing nut 16 at one of its ends. A shoulder 17 on the intermediate portion of each bolt is disposed in a recess 18 forming a portion of the holes or openings 14, on the side of the flange opposite to the nut 16.
At the opposite end, the bolts 15 receive a pair of interchangeable and outwardly divergent rim holders 20: and 21, having sensi'b central openings 26 and 27 in their parts 22 and 23 for receive the cylindrical portion 12 of the hub.
-This rim holder can be in the shape of a solid disc or be drilled to form spokes. The outer edge portions of the rim holders are arranged transversely as indicated at 30 and 31 and are fixed by rivets 33 and 34 to the endless side flanges 35 and 36 of a pair of rims 37 and 38. Openings 40 and 41 provided in the transverse parts 22 and. 23 of the rim holders receive the bolts 15, and nuts 45, screwed onto the outer ends of the bolts, hold the rim holders thereon.
It will be observed that the conical faces delimiting the central openings 26 and 27 converge towards each other and meet so as to provide an annular groove 50 of cross section in the shape of an inverted V. A split locking ring 55 of triangular cross section and slightly smaller than the groove 50 is disposed in this groove. This ring represented particularly at the fi-. 4 is slightly serpentine in formation.
Its base 56 rests directly on the cylindrical portion 12 of the hub, while its inclined outer surfaces 57 and 58, thanks to the serpentine formation of the ring, engage with the surfaces of the groove 50 at circumferential points. spaced. It is apparent that the surfaces 57 and 58 of the ring engage alternately without the conical or flared faces delimiting both the openings 26 and 27, respectively. As a result, each rim carrier is supported directly by the cylindrical portion of the hub via the ring 55.
This ring also acts as a spring between the rim holders, tending to separate them from one another and providing constant axial pressure against the nuts 45 on the bolts 15, even if the nuts should loosen slightly. .
Fig. 5 gives a means for fixing a single 20 on the bolts 15. This means comprises a plurality of spring washers 70, each of which is provided with a hole 71 to receive the bolt 15. The outer parts of the washers 70 have keyed keys. 72 resting against the rim holder 20, while their interior parts comprise -des wedges 73 being introduced between the conical surfaces delimiting the opening 26 and the cylindrical portion 12 of the hub.
By tightening the nuts 45 on the bolts 15, the clamping washers 70 will be pressed against the rim carrier and the shims 73 wedged between the conical wall of the opening 26 and the cylindrical portion of the hub. Consequently, the rim holder is rigidly fixed in position. If desired, a clamp ring, either endless or split in one location, can be used instead of washers 70.
Fig. 6 relates to a construction in which the portions 22 and 23 of the rim holders 20 and 21 have their openings for receiving tapered bolts or flared on both sides, as indicated respectively at 80, 81 and 82, 83 .
In order to fix the inner rim holder 20 to the bolts 15, at least temporarily until the outer rim holder 21 is mounted on the bolts, a guide nut 45 having a bevelled surface 86 and a hexagonal head 87 is screwed onto one of the lower bolts 15 until the surface 86 engages with the flare of the corresponding opening 81 in the rim holder 20. Then @ the outer rim holder 21 is disposed on the bolts and nuts 88, having bevelled faces 89, are screwed onto the bolts until their bevelled faces 89 engage the flared surfaces 83 of the bolt receiving openings in the rim holder 21.
The axial length of the guide nut is such that it does not come with the rim holder 21 or with the external nut screwed on. <B> this </B> same bolt. Apart from its task of temporarily securing the inner rim holder in position, the guide nut also provides a control connection between the inner rim holder 20 and the bolts 1.5 and also prevents relative transverse movement between the latter and the rim holder.
Likewise, in the construction shown in FIG. 6, the rim holders 20 and 21 have their inner peripheral edges tilted as in FIG. 2, and between these inclined edges a serpentine forming ring 55 is disposed. This ring fulfills the same purpose as that employed in the construction of FIG. 2.
Fig. 7 shows a construction similar to that shown in FIG. 6 with the difference that, instead of using the guide nut 85 and the nuts 88, use is made of a nut ;, 90 which:

<tb> rim <SEP> split <SEP> 93 <SEP> of <SEP> the <SEP> rim <SEP> is <SEP> contracted <SEP> during assembly and disassembly of the rim. By providing this widening 180 in the opening 99, the greatest proportion of the opening exposed to the outer surface of the rim, when the endless side cheek is in the position of use, can be made of a minimum width, what -which reduces. the danger of the tire inner tube being forced back through the opening by virtue of the pressure in the inner tube.
The transverse slot 94 includes an oblique or diagonal portion 107 which extends from the opening for the valve stem to a point near the rim 95 -and -this point communicates with a portion 101 of the slot which is. substantially perpendicular to the axis of the rim. This last portion of the slot extends partially over the lower portion of the tire retaining rim 95 and communicates with a slot portion 102 with reverse curvature (Fig. 15) provided in the radial lateral pa king 115 of the rim 95 s 'engaging with the bandage.
In turn, the curved slot portion 102 communicates with a diagonal slot portion 103 provided in the curved portion 116 of the tire retaining flange 95. Note that one end of the split rim body 93 of the rim corresponds. , as regards its curvature and direction, exactly at the other end, one of them having a projecting portion 105 which is housed in a complementary recess 106 of the other. By virtue of this protruding portion 105 and the recess <B> 106 </B> -of the respective ends -of the rim body, relative transverse movement therebetween is effectively-prevented.
The ends of the rim body also correspond with each other as regards their shape, in the portions 107 and 103 of the slot, and they are determined by abutment surfaces inclined with respect to spokes. of the rim extending to these portions of the slot.
Therefore, one end of the rim body engages slightly under the other -mittent end -of the rim body, and, due to this association of the two ends, of the rim body, their relative transverse movement is also prevented from occurring. this way. The substantially straight portion 101 of the slot, by virtue of the pressure of the tire on the rim body and the frictional engagement of its two ends, effectively prevents any relative lateral movement between the ends of the rim body.
The ends of the rim body 93 corresponding to each other in the portion 101 of the slot can also be determined in this portion by surfaces inclined slightly in one or the other direction with respect to spokes of the rim drawn towards this portion or these end surfaces may be established so as to coincide with the spokes of the rim brought towards this portion.
It is apparent that the end of the rim portion 93 shown in part in. lower part of fig. 15 is prevented from moving to the right because the tip portions of the opposite end of the rim body correspond to the diagonal portions 107 and 103 and the straight portion 101 of the slot prevents such movement. A movement of the end of the body & rim shown at the top of fig. 15 to the left is also effectively prevented by the end portions of the opposite end of the rim body corresponding to the diagonal portions 107 and 103 and by the right portion 101 of the slot.
A movement of the end of the rim body shown at the bottom of the. fig. 15 to the left is effectively prevented by the engagement of the ends of the janTe body in correspondence with the right portion 101 of the slot and the engagement of the flange 97 with the endless side cheek 35. Movement of the end of the slit. rim body shown in the upper part of fig. 15 to the right -is effectively engaged by the frictional engagement of the ends of the rim along the straight portion 101 of the slot.
While the shown shape of the slit is preferred, it will be understood that this may vary. For example, the end surfaces of the rim body corresponding to the diagonal portions 1.07 and <B> 103 </B> of the slot may be oriented at opposite angles with respect to the spokes of the rim brought towards these portions or they can be inclined at similar angles, but opposite to .ceux shown in FIGS. 15 and 17. In addition, these surfaces do not need to be inclined with respect to said radii, but can coincide with them.
It is also understood that the portion 102 curved in the opposite direction of the slot may vary and that the end faces of the rim corresponding to this location to each other may be inclined at various angles relative to the surfaces. exterior of the radial wall 115 of the re edge 95.
Each of the endless side flanges 35 and 36 of the rims is provided with a tire retaining rim 108 which comprises a portion 118 directed substantially outwardly and a portion 119 directed substantially laterally. The portion 118 is connected in. 109 to a cylindrical base portion 110 of complementary shape to the gutter 98 and -disposed therein. The lower face of the base portion 110 is provided with a channel 111 in which the rim 97 of the rim body 93 engages.
The ,, fig. 9 shows another construction for securing the rim holder to the retaining flange 108 of the side cheek bandage 35. Instead of using rivets 33, as described above, the outer peripheral part higher .du rim carrier has a portion 130 extending substantially outwardly and a laterally directed flange 131 which is housed in a bent portion 118, 119 -of corresponding shape of the lateral cheek 35 of the rim. The rim holder is welded to the cheek 35 by a weld joint indicated at 170.
According to fig. 10, the outer peripheral surface of the rim holder 20 is provided with a protruding portion 171 which is welded directly to the wall 118 of the flange 108 retaining the tire, as indicated in 172. It will be noted that whatever the weld is of the portion 171 of the rim holder, it does not change the diameter of the latter.
Fig. 11 shows a connection means similar to that shown in FIG. 9 in which the wall 118 of the flange 1 (i8 which retains the tire is welded over a large extent to the portion 130 of the rim holder? (1, 'as indicated in 173.
According to the fi-. 12, the peripheral, outer portion of the rim holder 20 is boxed together with the tire engagement flange 108 of the side cheek 35. As shown, the side cheek 35 has a wall 118 and a side cheek. flared portion 174 terminating in a curved portion 175, in which the curved portion <B> 132 </B> fits (the peripheral part 130 of the rim holder to form two rotated engagement portions one in the other.
In this way, the lateral cheek and the rim holder are locked in appearance against any relative movement between them both in the lateral direction and in the direction transverse to the axis. These interlocking portions can still be welded to one another if desired.
According to fig. 13, the lateral cheek 35 e, provided with an oblique rib or bead 177 which is welded directly end to end to the peripheral outer edge of the rim holder 20, as indicated at 178.
Although according to the previous figures, the rim holder is. riveted or welded to the cheek 35, it is understood that the rim holder and the side cheek can be fused together if desired.
According to fig. 14 to 16, a locking member or latch 120 (fig. 14) is arranged in the laterally enlarged openings 1 (1 (1 and 111 of the transversely split rim body (# ment 93 -and of the side cheek 35, respectively.
This locking member comprises a circular base portion 121 of diameter substantially equal to the distance between the edge of the opening 100 and pivoted to the lateral cheek 35 by a pivot 12'5 rotatably mounted in the cylindrical portion 109 of the cheek lateral <B> 35. </B> The outer end of this pivot <B> 125 </B> is provided with a conical head 126 which: engages in a flared opening 127 provided in the outer part of the cylindrical portion 109 of the side rim 35.
The <B> 126 </B> head protrudes slightly. the peripheral surface of the portion, cylindrical 109 so that when the tire mounted in place is inflated, the pressure thereof tends to: prevent the head <B> 126 </B> from rotating and therefore produces a tightening of the locking member 120.
The locking member is also provided with diametrically opposed eyes 135 and <B> 136 </B> extending radially inwards and terminating respectively in lips 137 and 138 which are adapted to fit into each other. - Secure under the ends of the transversely split rim body 93 on either side of the opening 100, thus preventing any radial movement towards the inside of these ends with respect to. side cheek 35.
The locking member 120 is also provided with an operating handle 140 to make it easier to turn the locking member to its inoperative position, in which the lips 137 and 138 are disposed along the opening 100 and disengaged from the ends of the transversely split rim body 93. The side wall of the circular portion 121 of the locking member engages substantially with the ends of the transversely split rim body determined by the opening <B> 100 </B> and prevents any relative eirconferential movement between the transversely split rim body and the side cheek.
The central portion of the blocking member is provided above with a semi-circular recess 145 which extends at right angles to the lips 137 and 138. This recess is provided for receiving the valve stem 117 directed laterally (fig. 2), which protrudes through the openings 100 and 99 when the locking member or latch is in the operative position. In order to be able to release the latch, it is necessary to push the valve stem against the interior until it is released out of the recess 145.
When a deflated tire is to be removed from one of the rims 37 or 38, the rim holder associated with this rim is removed from the hub 10 of the wheel by unscrewing the nuts 45 and mounting the rim holder of the rim. bolts 15. Next, the valve stem <B> 117, </B>, with the tire deflated, can be easily taken out of the recess 145 of the latch, as shown in connection with the rim 38 in fig. . 2 and the locking member is turned to the inoperative position, as shown in, FIG. 16.
Using a suitable tool, not shown, arranged to be able to engage in a notch 150 of the flange 97 of the rim body 93 split transversely adjacent to the enlarged position 100 of the receiving opening 99 for the rod As a valve, the corresponding end of the transversely split rim body 93 can be moved radially inwards so as to disengage it from the side cheek 35, and then, after suitable insertion of the tool between the side cheek 35. and said re edge 97, the transversely split rim body will be entirely released from the lateral cheek 35.
Notches <B> 155 </B> provided in the rim holders 20 -and 21, one of which is arranged in the vicinity of the locking member 120, facilitate the initial positioning of the tool as well as the successive engagement operations. The rim is reassembled in the opposite way to that described for its disassembly.
According to the above description, it can be seen that in the wheels described, the rim carrier (s) bear directly on the hub instead of being supported only by bolts which fix the rim carrier detachably to the hub. This is very desirable there. where a pair of rim holders is employed because not only radial sliding is prevented between the rim holders, but also the forces imposed on the bolts are mitigated.
Furthermore, the serpentine ring provided between the rim carrier and the hub acts as a spring tending to prevent the serrated loosening of the nuts 45 on the outer ends of the bolts, since this ring tends to separate the nuts. rim holder in the lateral direction.
It is also apparent that means are provided to retain the inner rim holder of a pair of rim holders in position, at least temporarily, until the outer rim holder is placed on the bolts. , and that these means serve as a guiding connection between the inner rim holder and the bolts.
In addition, it is apparent that new and efficient means are provided for securing the peripheral outer parts of the rim holders to the parts of the rim comprising the transversely split rim body 37 and the side cheek 35. The locking device provided. for maintaining the transversely split rim body 37 and the side flange 35 in assembly relation is particularly suited for use in wheel assemblies as described, in which the peripheral outer part of the rim carrier is attached to the side cheek.
