Loom fitted with a rigid weft feeder. This invention relates to weaving looms and more particularly to looms without shuttles, that is to say to looms in which, instead of the weft being placed in the crowd by a can or equivalent member carried by a shuttle conducted through this shed, said weft is supplied by a fixed feed device and inserted pick by pick in the shed.
According to the invention, the weft supplied by a fixed feed device is received by a weft carrier and placed in the shed by this weft carrier, said weft carrier being transported on part of the path to Ira towards the crowd by a bar and then being abandoned by that bar and made dependent on a second bar which carries it the rest of the way through the crowd.
The weft carrier can, for example, be provided with a hook or other device for receiving the weft presented to the weft carrier laterally to the loom. It can be suitably established to be received and carried by the bars and it can be provided with a positive device for. fix it to. .l'one or other of said bars, suitable devices being in this case provided to remove its connection with one of these bars and to make it engage with the other bar.
The weft, which can be laid as a single or double pick, is retained by the weft carrier from the time it is received by it, until the time the weft carrier has arrived on the weft. other side of the loom, this yarn then being -dégé from the hook or other device.
In this way, the whole weft carrier and weft, held or supported by the bars, can be driven through the shed at a predetermined speed, and the weft can be laid evenly and evenly in the shed.
Any desired device can be applied to make the weft carrier alternately dependent on either of the bars used to transport it or pass it through the shed. Thus, one can apply for this purpose devices (mechanical, electrical, pneumatic or others) controlled either by a mechanism or a gear at suitable time working jointly with the control gear of the loom or of certain parts of the loom,
or simply by a device actuated by the arrival of the weft carrier at or near the position where the latter must be abandoned by one of the bars and taken up by the other. In the case of mechanical means, a latching mechanism eliminating the. connection of the weft carrier with one of the bars and coupling it with the other bar can be actuated by a cam or other mechanism working at required intervals, for example by cams working co: i, jointly with the device used for. insert the bars into the crowd and remove them.
Unlocking. one of the pawls and the locking of the other pawl can; still be ensured by mutual action between the pawls in order to disconnect the weft holder from one of the bars and to couple it to. the other.
When an electrical device is used to make the tram carrier alternately dependent on one and the other of the bars, this device can effect, using electromagnets or solenoids, the coupling the weft carrier with the bars and disengaging the tra.nic carrier from these bars, by closing or breaking the circuits of the electromagnets or solenoids, carried out either automatically by the movement of the bars,
or by time-controlled gear transmission. The coupling can be effected by electromagnets or solenoids acting either directly on the weft holder or on one or more elements of the weft holder, or on pawls serving to couple the weft holder with the bars. Thus, pawls actuated by springs or the like for coupling the weft carriers can be clicked at the required intervals using electromagnets or solenoids.
Insertion of the weft can be effected from only one side of the loom, but the weft carrier could equally satisfactorily be set up to insert the weft from both sides, either alternately or as follows. desired order or layout. In addition, a device can be provided for selecting and presenting to the weft carrier one of the elements of a series of threads which it is desired to use for mixing purposes or to produce colored effects, designs, etc.
The weft can be presented to the weft carrier, with a view to its insertion into the shed, in any desired manner, the invention not being limited to any specific means for fixing the. weft to the weft carrier. For example, to insert the weft as a single pick, the end of the weft from the spool or stationary weft feeder can be taken by the weft carrier which pulls the required amount of weft through. shed, the pick then being cut and thus separated from the coil. The weft carrier then repeats the insertion either from the opposite side of the loom or after returning through the shed.
According to another way of laying the weft using the weft carrier, the weft can be cut in the form of a loop on one or each of the sides of the loom. When the weft is cut in the form of a loop on each side of the loom, a branch of one of these loops can then be taken from one side of the loom, placed in the shed in the form of a single pick, followed consecutively by a branch of the loop taken from the opposite side of the loom, the second branch of the. first loop, and the second branch of the aforementioned second loop, the nose of each loop constituting the edge of the fabric.
According to another way of laying the weft, the weft can be received by the weft carrier in the form of a loop which is either carried the double pick fashion through the shed, is laid in the form of a single pick, which is obtained by cutting the end of the loop connected to the bundle of yarn when this loop has been transported on part of the path ii through the shed.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, parts of embodiments of the loom according to the invention, but it is understood that this invention is not limited by the description which follows.
Fig. 1 to 4 represent a device for inserting the wefts comprising electrical means for making the weft holder alter natively dependent on one and the other bar; Fig. 1 schematically represents the assembly of the insertion device of the weft carrier and the electrical connections; Fig. 2 -is a view on a larger scale of the applied contactor mechanism; Fig. 3 and 4 are respectively an elevation and a plan on a larger scale of the weft holder and the insertion bars;
Fig. 5 to 9 show another embodiment of the device for inserting the wefts comprising keys mechanical means for making the weft holder alternately dependent on one and the other bar; Fig. 5 shows the general arrangement of the device; Fig. 6, 7 -and 8 are details of the mechanical means of FIG. 5; 'Fig. 9 is an elevational view with partial section of the weft holder and one of the insertion bars.
In fig. 1 to 4, two bars 10 are constrained to effect a reciprocating movement along the track (not shown) of a loom by any suitable mechanism such as levers 11 operated, with the aid of one or more cams or other organs, by the motor shaft of the loom and connected by rods 12 to the bars 10. The bars 10 are actuated so as to move together towards the 'inside and out at any desired speed and their role is to transport a weft-carrying member 13 across the crowd of the trade.
The weft carrier 13 comprises a body 14 provided with hooks 15 intended to receive the weft 16 and with longitudinal extensions 17.
The internal end of each of the bars 10 carries a sleeve 18 intended to receive one of the extensions 17 of the weft holder, this sleeve being surrounded by a coil 19. The sleeve 18 may be made of a magnetically permeable material for form an electromagnet with the coil, in which case elements such as the weft holder may be made of steel, iron or other magnetic material, so that they are attracted by the end of the weft. the. socket. As a variant, the. socket 18 may be made of a magnetically impermeable material. in which case it is preferable that the extensions 17 are made of soft iron.
Means such as holes in the bushings or grooves 170 in the bushes or extensions will provided to allow the trapped air to escape when the extensions enter the sockets. To facilitate this entry, the orifice of the bushes 18 is preferably flared or funnel-shaped as indicated at 180. The extensions 17 may be provided with conical ends for the same purpose. To maintain the weft holder in the desired position to receive the weft, the bushes and the extensions are established so as to prevent these members from rotating relative to each other.
For example, they may have a square or other polygonal shape in cross section.
When one of the extensions 17 of the weft holder 13 is fitted into one of the sockets 18 of the bars 10, the weft holder is firmly fixed to the bar carrying the socket if the circuit of the coil 19 is established, but is on the contrary free in this socket when the circuit of the. coil is cut.
Thus, when the weft carrier 13 firmly fixed to one of the bars, for example the one on the left, is transported across the shed, its free extension enters the socket of the right bar, and if the circuit of the left reel opens, while that of the right reel closes, the weft holder, the extensions 17 of which are still nested in the two sockets 18, becomes fixed to the right bar. When the bars retreat the weft carrier is consequently withdrawn by the right bar and ends its movement from the left to the right of the shed.
The weft presented to one or the other of the hooks 15, laterally to the loom at the moment or towards the moment when the weft holder reaches one of its outer limit positions, is clamped by a leaf spring 21 which maintains it during the loom. insertion or which, in the case of loop insertion, constantly exerts tension on that loop while allowing it to slide over the hook.
It will be noted that the weft carrier 13 moves with one of the bars 10 during the half of the movement -from the middle outward and half of the next inward movement, but it is not essential that it be firmly fixed to the bar in inward movement, since this bar then has only the role of pushing the weft carrier. However, it is convenient to keep the cimcuit of each coil closed for the time necessary to insert an entire pipe,
the weft carrier being fixed to one of the bars during an outward movement and an inward movement of this bar and then being fixed to the other bar during an outward movement and an inward movement. inside this bar. A contacting device suitable for this purpose is shown in figs. 1 and 2.
A shaft 22 suitably mounted on the frame of the loom is operated at half the speed of the crank shaft by means of a gear (not shown) and carries an insulated disk 23 bearing at its periphery a. contact segment 24. A slip ring 25 mounted on shaft 22 is connected to segment 24 and receives current by a brush? 6. Two brushes 27 are arranged to successively come into contact with the segment 24 during the rotation of the shaft 22. These brushes 27 are connected by wires 28 to one of the terminals of the coils 19, respectively, the other terminals of these coils being connected by wires 29, 30 to one of the poles of the current source 31.
The brush 26 is connected to the other pole of the source 31 by a wire 32. The arc occupied by the contact segment 24 on the periphery of the disc 23 depends on the. contact time required for each coil is approximately 180. In the case of electromagnetic operation of the coils and the weft carrier, it may be necessary to provide a contact arc of less than 180 due to the delay produced by the 'hi s teresis. in the magnetic socket.
In the arrangement of fig. 5-9, weft insert bars 10 are arranged to reciprocate along the loom track in a manner analogous to. that described in relation to: fig. 1. Bushes 34 formed at the internal end of the bars 10 are arranged to receive the ends of a weft carrier 35 which is provided with hooks 15 and a positive tension device 21.
A hook 36 formed at each of the ends of the weft holder 35 is arranged to engage with. a pawl 37 pivoting at 38, one of the arms 39 of this pawl being arranged to be actuated by pushers 40 passing inside the bars 10. One end of each pusher 40 abuts against the end -41 of a lever 42 which can conveniently be pivotally mounted at the junction 43 of the link 12 with the bar 10.
A lever of the first kind 44 pivots about a vertical axis 45 and a lever 46 ft voting at 47 is arranged to enter a slot 48 of one of the arms of the lever 44, a cam 49 or other suitable communicating member. a complete oscillation at the lever 46 for two picks of the trade. The lever 44 thus receives an oscillating movement, so that its arms come alternately to the desired position to come into contact with the lower arm 50 of the lever 42 mounted on that of the bars 10 which introduces the weft carrier 35 into the shed. .
The length of each arm 44 is such that the lever 42 receives an oscillating movement of sufficient amplitude to disengage the pawl 37 from the hook 36 of the weft holder 35. The pawl 37 of the other arm 10 engages with the weft holder 35 to remove it from the remaining part of the shed. On the next pick, the reverse takes place.
Another means of achieving the goal by a ratchet mechanism consists in ensuring that a pawl carried by the bar about to reach the weft holder releases a pawl by which the weft holder. is attached to the other bar and itself engages with the weft carrier, the action being reversed in the next pick, the second mentioned pawl then acting to disengage the first mentioned pawl. location.
We will now describe several ways of making the loom work according to the invention, noting that it is irrelevant that the dependence of one and the other bar is carried out by one or the other of the means (electric and ratchet) previously described.
If it is desired to insert the weft in the form of a single pick, the end of the reel or package of weft is presented to the loom at one of the hooks 15 of the weft holder 13 and this end by- below the, tension device 21. The weft carrier 13 is then introduced into the shed by one of the bars 10, engaged by the other bar and withdrawn by the latter, so that it pulls a length of weft through the shed. crowd.
It is desirable that a tension be applied to the weft leaving the reel, so that this weft is laid in a straight line in the shed, this tension being of course less than that communicated at the end of the weft to fix. this to the weft holder.
When the weft has been placed in the shed, the neighboring end of the supply reel is clamped so that the movement of the weft holder 13 coming out of the shed has the effect of releasing the key end of the weft held on. the hook l5. After the strike, the weft holder in a similar way lays a weft pulled from the other side of the loom. Instead of inserting a single pick, a double pick could be placed in the form of a loop pulled from one or each side of the loom, the weft holder pulling the loop through the shed and then being released. to leave the loop in the crowd.
In this case, the weft is engaged by -springs provided on the weft carrier, and because the weft -is retained by the selvedge or by the feed coil, the weft is released from the springs of the weft carrier when the weft carrier passes out of the crowd, and the weft is placed in the crowd.
In addition, a weft loop may be carried over only part of the shed, for example to the point where the weft weight is abandoned by one of the bars, with one end of the loop then being cut off, the weft. free end of the weft being pulled through the hook and laid over the remaining part of the shed in the continuation of the movement of the weft carrier.
A loop of thread drawn from a spool located laterally to the loom may be inserted as two single picks, each of the branches of the loop being long enough for one pick. One of the branches of the loop is pulled by the weft holder through the shed and, after the flapper has struck, the weft holder returns with one branch of the loop located on the other. side of the craft.
The weft carrier then inserts the second branch of the first loop, then the second branch of the second loop, the nose of each loop having the role of forming a tie and binding the free ends of each loop in the loop. tissue. Further loops are then debited or measured on the sides of the loom, and insertion continues in the same order.
If desired, any suitable selvedge forming device can be applied. For example, one can form a selvedge using the loops of a double pick, grasp and bring back into the shed the ends of the weft laid in a preceding shed, use separate selvedge-forming shuttles, etc.
