Pressmischung.
EMI0001.0023
Kasein <SEP> 100 <SEP> Gewichtsteile
<tb> Kondensationsprodukt <SEP> aus <SEP> Harnstoff
<tb> und <SEP> Paraformaldehyd <SEP> 200 <SEP> Gewichtsteile
<tb> Wasser <SEP> 50
Press mix. The present invention relates to a new molding compound containing resins of the urea-formaldehyde type and, as filler, proteids.
It is known that urea and formaldehyde can act on each other to form clear, resin-like products which, if heated sufficiently, can be melted. The resins prepared in this manner are not, however, satisfactory binders for the common fibrous or other fillers commonly used in conjunction with the curable phenol-aldebyd type resins.
We have found that these urea-formaldehyde-type resins give an excellent press mix when suitably combined or combined with fillers which are wholly or in a sufficiently large part of proteinaceous bodies, such as the Example casein, gelatin, glue or the like.
It is preferred to use casein and, in conjunction with it, certain plasticizers, such as ethylene glycol and (3, lycerin. Below, an expedient embodiment of the invention is described, for example. Of course, the invention is not limited to the specific substances and proportions given as examples or manipulation restricted.
A mixture is made with the following composition:
EMI0001.0023
Casein <SEP> 100 <SEP> parts by weight
<tb> Condensation product <SEP> from <SEP> urea
<tb> and <SEP> paraformaldehyde <SEP> 200 <SEP> parts by weight
<tb> water <SEP> 50
<tb> ethylene glycol <SEP> 40 <SEP> "
<tb> Aqueous <SEP> ammonia solution <SEP> 13 <SEP> "These ingredients are mixed thoroughly in suitable mechanical fishing devices, such as in a ball mill and then on rotating rollers.
The above specification can of course be changed both with regard to the ingredients used and their proportions in order to achieve special properties of the press mixes. It contains three classes of components that are all essential for achieving the best results: The urea resins -Formaldehyde type, the casein or equivalent proteids, which form the main filler; and finally ammonia, glycol and water, which are used to plasticize the filler.
You can also use inert fillers, such as wood fiber, Lithopon or the like in connec tion with the proteins in amounts that do not detrimentally reduce the plasticity of the mixture. The proportion depends on the specific application.
The amount of the urea-formaldehyde type resin can be reduced considerably, provided, of course, that the good bonding ability of the resin is not impaired. For example, you can use 20 parts by weight or even a little less per 100 parts by weight of the protein of your urea-formaldehyde type resin. But you can also use intermediate proportions, depending on the special properties required of the end product.
The press mixes described are easy to shape and, under the usual conditions of the hot press process, result in hard and solid, shaped objects that are infusible and are only slightly attacked by neutral solvents. In some cases it is advantageous to incorporate cellulose esters, namely cellulose acetate or the dinitro compound, into the mixture.
This addition makes it possible to change the appearance of the surface and. to improve the resistance of the molded article to water without affecting the moldability of the mixture. The processibility of the mixture can also be improved for certain special purposes by adding other plasticizers, namely those which, in addition to a low vapor pressure, show water-repellent properties, such as the dialkyl esters of organic acids, e.g.
B. diethyl or dibutyl oxalate P, -tartrate or 1.'hthalate. Other additives can be used in the same way.
The resins of the urea-formaldehyde type that are used in accordance with the present invention also include those resins in the manufacture of which, instead of urea, thiourea or generally those homologues or derivatives of urea that are used in resins from Urea-formaldehyde type are to be regarded as equivalents for urea.
