. La machine représentée sur le dessin est particulièrement adaptée pour être utilisée pour la torsion d'une bande 2 destinée à for mer le noyau du câble décrit dans le brevet américain précité. Cette bande comporte des bords élargis ou épaissis 4 qui donnent à la section de la bande sensiblement la forme d'unI. Ainsi qu'on l'a représenté, cette ma chine comporte une tête de torsion 6, un tambour 8 sur lequel est enroulée la bande ou ruban à tordre, bande qui est tirée vers -la tête de torsion et une roue constamment en traînée 10 faisant avancer la bande à une vi tesse uniforme à partir de la tête de torsion;
Machine for twisting metal strips. The invention relates to a machine intended to twist metal bands, for example copper bands intended to form the core of a cable such as, for example, that described in US Pat. No. 1597422. </ B> The strip from which the core of this cable is formed has its edges thickened so that the cut of this strip has the shape of a I; when the strip is twisted to form the core of the cable, there is obtained a relatively large helical support surface, on which the cabled wires of the cable will be placed.
When forming this core it is very important that the metal strip be twisted evenly so that uniform support is obtained for the cabled wires; it is also important that when twisting the metal strip, the I-shaped cut of this strip is not distorted. If the twisted strip had -in cut a shape more or less close to a S, instead of having a straight shape, the surfaces of the opposite edges of the strip would be tilted trans- versally and would not thus be in contact, over their entire width, with the cabled wires, as is the case when the twisted strip has a very straight cut.
In addition, a strip whose cut is straight, constitutes a more rigid and firm support for the cabled yarns than a strip whose cut has been deformed more or less in an S-shape. It has been found that it is difficult to properly twist a strip to obtain such a core with a sufficiently high speed. The twisted strip must be perfectly uniform and its faces and edges must not exhibit any distortion or perfection, these conditions must be maintained over very long lengths of continuous strip.
The machine according to the present invention gives satisfactory industrial results, from the point of view of production speed and from the point of view of economy.

. The machine shown in the drawing is particularly suitable for being used for the twisting of a strip 2 intended to form the core of the cable described in the aforementioned US patent. This strip has widened or thickened edges 4 which give the section of the strip substantially the shape of a I. As has been shown, this machine has a torsion head 6 , a drum 8 on which the twisting tape or tape is wound, which tape is drawn towards the torsion head and a constantly trailing wheel 10 advancing the tape at a uniform speed from the torsion head;
the machine also comprises the drum 12 on which is wound the twisted strip coming from the feed and adjustment wheel 10.
The torsion head 6, which carries the devices acting on the band for the twisting :, as will be described below, is provided with a cylindrical rod 14 which can rotate in a bearing made at the end. upper -a support 16 mounted on the so key of the machine, the rod 14 completely passing through the bearing in question. The outer or front end of the rod 14 is fixed to the rear end of a shaft 18 which passes through a bearing made in the upper end of a support 20 corresponding to the support 16. The front end of the shaft 18 is provided with a collar 22 to which is attached. by means of bolts 26, a cross bar 24.
This transverse bar constitutes the rear part of a rectangular yoke comprising your lateral longitudinal parts 28 on which are placed suitable bearings for the ends of the shaft of the drum 8, the axis of this drum being perpendicular to the caliper axis. The front end 30 of the caliper is fixed by bolts 32 to a flange 34 made at the rear end of a shaft 36 which passes through the upper end of a support 38 mounted on the base of the machine and which can rotate in this upper end of said support.
The shaft 36 is aligned with respect to the shaft 18 and with respect to the torsion head; this shaft is controlled so as to rotate the caliper 28 and the torsion head, thanks to a suitable connection 40 formed of chains and wheels. chain, this connecting device being connected to the shaft of the electric motor 42.
The band to be twisted is drawn from the drum 8 and passes under a guide rod 44 which extends between the side pieces of the caliper; the strip then passes through a hole made in the axis of the rear transverse bar of the caliper, in the shaft 18 and finally in the torsion head. A cylindrical guide sleeve 46 is placed at the front end of the hole in the axis of the torsion head, this sleeve being held in place by a set screw 48. A similar guide sleeve 50 is placed. in the hole made along the axis of the crossbar 24 and it is. held in this hole by a fixing screw 52.
The internal diameter of the guide sleeves 46 and 50 corresponds substantially to the width of the strip, so that these sleeves will effectively mistletoe the strip when the latter passes through them. The guide rod 44 allows the strip to arrive properly at the chon-guide sleeve 50, that is to say to occupy a substantially diametric position in the sleeve. L2 sleeve 46 effectively guides the web as it passes through the twisting device carried by the twisting head. The sleeves 46 and 50 are organized so that they can be removed and replaced by sleeves of different diameters, corresponding to the different widths of the bands.
The feed drum 8 is provided with a tape braking device 54, in order to prevent the drum from rotating too much when the tape is drawn from this drum during operation of the machine. The torsion devices alluded to above include two pairs or series of rollers 56. The rollers of each pair are attached to one end of a shaft 60 and are held by a washer 62 mounted on the shaft. and interposed between said rollers.
The rollers are attached to. the aforementioned shaft between a collar 61 formed on the shaft and a fixing nut 66 screwed to the end of the shaft. Each shaft 60 passes through a suitable bearing formed by a block 68 mounted on a face 70 of the torsion head, which face is inclined backwards and inwards; the two faces 70 are appreciably inclined relative to the arc of the head by an angle of approximately 42; these two fa ces are diametrically opposed to each other; each block 68 is fixed to the tor sion head by a screw or bolt 72 (fig. 5) which passes through a side lug 74 formed on the block and which is screwed into the torsion head.
The two roller-holder shafts 60 are dragged so as to rotate the rollers; during the rotation of the torsion head, by means of pinions 76 fixed to the outer or front end of these shafts; these pinions mesh with a fixed toothed wheel 78 fixed to the support 16 carrying the torsion head.
The roller support shafts 60 are arranged substantially parallel to the inclined faces 70 and the rollers are placed in the vicinity of the rear end of the guide sleeve 4.6, the left pair of rollers (if we look at Figs. 10 and 11) being placed slightly closer to the end of the guide sleeve than the other pair of rollers.
The two pairs of rollers are arranged so as to be able to be moved closer to or apart from one another by means of a screw or bolt 72; the rollers are held rigidly against any outward movement, during operation of the machine, by fixing screws or bolts 80 which are screwed into lugs 82 arranged on the torsion head and which come in contact with the bearing blocks 68. As has been shown, the roller shafts 60 are inclined slightly rearward and outward. This inclination can be altered by slightly adjusting the lower ends of the blocks 68, the screws 72 passing through elongated grooves 84 made in the ears 74.
The shafts 60 are organized so as to be adjusted longitudinally, which makes it possible to adjust the rollers along their axis. To this end, each of the shafts 60 is hand held against any axial movement, thanks to a device 86 whose inner end passes through a notch 88 made in the bearing formed in the block 68; the inner end of this part 86 is provided with a series of transverse ribs 90 which engage in annular grooves 91 of the shaft 60 so as to prevent any longitudinal movement, while allowing rotation of it. The device 86 is fixed by a bolt 92 to an adjustment block 94.
This device is held in a rigid manner, against any upward movement, due to the contact existing between the head of a fixing screw 96 screwed into the adjustment block 94 and the upper end of the device. 86. The lower part of the adjustment block 94 is provided with a longitudinal groove .qui receives a projection 98 carried by the block 68; the adjustment block being split longitudinally and the outer end of the bolt 100 being screwed into half of this block. Thanks to this organization, it is obvious that if the screws 100 are released, the blocks 94 can be adjusted longitudinally so as to adjust in the axial direction the corresponding shafts 60 and consequently the series of rollers carried by said shafts. .
The rollers of each series can be moved closer to or away from each other by inserting, between these rollers, washers 62 of different dimensions. As has been shown, the various rollers have the form of discs with smooth and rounded edges, the inner or front roller of each series having a diameter slightly smaller than the outer or rear roller. When the operator threads the working band into the machine, he twists the end of this band with a pair of pliers before engaging it in the twisting head.
This twisted end of the strip, after it has been passed through the torsion head, is placed between the two sets of torsion rollers 56 so that each edge of the strip is disposed between the rollers of the adjacent set. . The rolls of the two sets are placed in such a way that the inner parts of the rounded edges of the rolls of each set come into contact with the twisted end of the strip on the opposite sides of the strip, following separate lines, towards the inside of the opposite edge of the strip .. the contact lines of the rolls of the two series being equally spaced from the longitudinal center line of the strip (see fig. 10).
The twisted end of the strip being thus presented to the two series of rollers, when the latter will rotate and come to bear on the strip on each side of its median line, due to the rotation of the torsion head when the machine is going to be started, said rollers will act in such a way as to gently and uniformly bring the strip between said rollers and will continue, over the entire length of the strip, the twist which had been initiated at the end of this strip .
The contact of the rollers and the strip, during the twisting operation, is limited to the lines indicated at 101 in fig. 12; these lines are the continuation of the initial contact points of the rollers with the twisted ends of the web as described above. Thus, the rollers not coming into contact with the opposite edges of the strip, they can consequently neither deform nor damage said strip in any way. The inner roll of each series preferably has a smaller diameter than the outer roll so that the opposite edge of the approaching portion of the web is clear.
When the rotational speed of the torsion head and the speed of travel of the web are uniform, it is evident that the torsion will be uniform over the entire length of the web. At the point where the rollers come into contact with the belt, they rotate at a peripheral speed slightly greater than the speed of that belt, so that there is some slippage between the rollers and the belt and there is a friction or stretching action of the rollers of the. band, which contributes significantly to the regularity and uniformity of the twist. It has been found that with rollers thus acting on the web, the I-shape of the section of the web is not deformed during the twisting operation.
The possibility of the different settings of the torsion rollers allows the machine to act on bands of different widths and thicknesses, within certain limits, however, a roll size can act on bands having very noticeably different widths thanks to the suitable settings of the two sets of rollers. Bands of different thickness, however, require the adjustment of the rollers of each series, so that the distance between these rolls is adjusted as indicated above according to the thickness of the tape to work.
After a sufficient length of the strip has been twisted, the front end of this strip passes over the feed and adjustment wheel 10 (fig. 1,?. 8 and 9); this feed device comprises a wheel on which the strip passes, the latter embracing approximately 3 / .1 of the periphery of the wheel. The feed device also comprises a fixed guide member 102 comprising a groove receiving the twisted strip when it leaves the aforementioned wheel; this guide member moves the strip away from one side of the line going from the wheel to the torsion head and guides this strip above the wheel and towards the receiving drum 12.
This feed device comprises a series of teeth 104 which are suitably inclined so as to penetrate into the spaces formed between the different turns of the twisted strip; in this way, the band is driven desmodromically. The feed wheel is driven periodically at a suitable speed so as to keep the twisted web from the twist rollers at a certain degree of tension without this tension being strong enough to untwist the twisted web.
This wheel 10 is fixed to one end of a shaft 106 which passes through a bearing 108 in which it can rotate, which bearing is mounted on the base of the machine; the shaft 106 is driven so as to drive the aforementioned wheel demodromically by means of a connection with the torsion head. This link comprises a gear wheel 109 fixed to the rod 14 of the torsion head; this wheel 109 meshes with a wheel 110 fixed on the front end of a shaft 112. The other end carries a worm 114 which meshes with the helical wheel 116 fixed on the shaft of the feed wheel.
The receiving drum 12, which receives the twisted strip coming from the feed wheel 10, is carried by a shaft 118, the ends of which are mounted in suitable bearings carried by supports 120 (fig. 1, 2 and 3 ). This receiving drum is driven by a link with the shaft 112 which drags the feed wheel 10. This link comprises a chain 122 which passes over a chain wheel carried by the shaft 112 and over a wheel. chain carried by the front end of shaft 124; the rear end of this shaft 124 carries a worm 126 which meshes with the helical wheel 128, mounted on the shaft 118 of the receiving drum.
The helical wheel 128 drives the shaft 118 of the drum by means of a friction device which is adjusted to cause the receiving drum to wind the twisted strip at a speed substantially equal to that at which the feed wheel 10 is driven. , without excessive force being produced on the bent tape. The friction device comprises a collar 130 fixed to the shaft 118 against the inner face of the helical wheel 128 and a collar 132 mounted so as to be able to turn on said shaft and ad jacent to the outer face of the helical wheel 128. , the adjacent faces of the collars and the helical wheel being able to drive with each other by friction.
A tie collar 134 is fixed to the shaft 118 against the outer face of the collar 132 and is connected to said collar by studs 136 which force the collar 132 to rotate with the collar 134 while allowing axial displacement of the collar 132. The latter is pressed against the helical wheel 128 by means of fixing screws 138 which are screwed into openings made in the collar 134; an elastic material 140, such as leather, is interposed between the ends of the screws 138 and the collar 132. By suitable adjustment of the fixing screws 138, it is obvious that the desired drive can be achieved by friction. between the helical wheel 128 and the receiving drum.
