Process for the oxidation of leuco compounds of the triarylmethane series. It has been found that leuco compounds of the triaryl methane series can be oxidized to dyes if the leuco compounds are in bases such as pyridine. its homologues, quinoline or similar or mixtures of these bases, if appropriate in the presence of diluents such as water or alcohols, after addition of a copper salt, treated with molecular oxygen, such as air or pure oxygen.
This new and peculiar oxidation process, using bases such as pyridine, quinoline and its homologues, leuco compounds of the triarylmethane series almost; To be able to convert quantitatively into dyes is surprising since the generally known oxidation method using copper salts as a carrier of molecular oxygen in aqueous, acidic or alkaline solutions fails in most cases.
For example, the leucoic acid obtained according to example 3 of the process of the German Reich patent no. 287004 cannot be oxidized by this known method, while the oxidation is possible by the new process. Compared to the usual oxidation processes with lead peroxide, manganese dioxide, biclromate, etc., the new process also offers the advantage that in certain cases in which the old methods are difficult or impossible to apply, the corresponding dyes can easily be obtained .
Example <I> 1: </I> 20 g of leuco acid from vic.-m-yylidine-benzaldehyde d-2,4-disulfonic acid, obtainable by the process of Swiss patent no. 1-11318, are in 100 cm "pyridine and Dissolve 5 cm of water and add a solution of 0.7 g of copper chloride in 5 cm of water. The mixture is stirred with an intensive stirrer with air supply and heating at about <B> 100 '</B> until the Dye has completely excreted.
After cooling, the dye is suctioned off and adhering pyridine is removed with saline solution. The yield of dye is almost quantitative. Instead of copper chloride, other copper salts, for example copper chloride or copper sulfate, can also be used.
According to this information, the leuco acids also obtainable according to the above-mentioned notification can also be oxy dated from o-tolaidin-benzaldehyde-2,4-disulfonic acid and p-cylidine-benzaldehyde-2,4-disulfonic acid.
<I> Example 2: </I> 20 g para-leukaniline or the corresponding amount of its mono-, di- or trichlorohydrate ground in 100 cm "pyridine and 0.7 g copper chloride in 5 em3 water ser dissolved, added.
The solution is treated as indicated in Example 1. As soon as there is no increase in the dye, the pyridine is distilled off in vacuo, taken up with dilute hydrochloric acid and the paraffin hydrate is precipitated with common salt. Then one cleanses by dissolving. The yield of dye is very good. The pyridine can be replaced by its homologues, quinoline or mixtures of these bases.
<I> Example 3: </I> 20 g of the leuco acid from o-cresotinic acid-benzaldehyde - o - sulfonic acid, obtainable under German patent no. 189938, are dissolved in 130 cm "of pyridine with the addition of some water. This solution is after the addition of 1 kg of copper chloride with rapid stirring and air supply until the end of the oxidation to 100 he warms.
After the pyridine has been distilled off, the dye is salted out in an acidic solution. In this case, part of the pyridine can also be replaced by glycerine.
