process for the production of zinc white. A method for the production of zinc white from metallic substances, for example from metallic zinc, from zinc-containing metals or metal alloys, is known, according to which in a channel a closed cross-section from .the metallic substance without the addition of fuel .by external heat supply a: Melt is produced, over which an oxidizing gas stream is passed, whereby the heat of reaction arising from above combustion of the zinc vapors in the furnace atmosphere comes into play on the melt.
The above-mentioned known process offers the advantage that even zinc alloys with a low level of zinc can be processed into a zinc color of impeccable wisdom and opacity, since the heat supply from above prevents the zinc bath from boiling violently with the formation of bubbles any impurities contained in the bath in .the zinc vapors are also torn out; As a result, the heat of reaction can also be used. A large fuel saving can be achieved.
The invention relates to a method for the production of zinc white while maintaining all the advantages of this known method with further, fuel savings, which in .simple way allows to control the quality of the zinc paint to be produced and consists in .that the heating of the Also without adding fuel to the melt, pieces of metal fed into the melt at melting temperature and their conversion from the liquid to the vapor state takes place by the fact that the metallic,
Melt-containing channel is rotated around its longitudinal axis during the combustion of the zinc vapors, whereby part of the reaction heat generated in the furnace atmosphere comes into effect on the metallic melt from below. In this way, if the circulation rate is set correctly, it can be achieved that: the reaction heat generated in the furnace atmosphere is even able to maintain the process, once started by introducing external heat, without further introduction of external heat. so the heat is generated by the evaporated zinc itself.
The regulation of the evaporation rate and the quality of the manufactured zinc white can be done in the simplest way by changing the number of revolutions of the rotating drum containing the metallic melt.
Another advantage: the invention consists in: that in a smaller space and with lower system costs than before, a system with greater efficiency can be obtained, in which the maintenance costs are also reduced, since the execution of the drum, for example from Chamotte consists in that, when turning, it gets under: the melt, as a result of releasing part of its heat to: the melt or. is cooled to the replenished metal blocks, which increases the service life of the furnace.
It should be noted that the use of rotary kilns is known in a number of industries, including the tin smelting industry. The processes carried out in the latter with rotary kilns made of P el
through which the metallurgical oxide used as the starting material for the production of metallic zinc or dye oxides is obtained, have the common feature that the process can only be maintained if the raw material is good at the one end of the furnace in the form of a mixture with fuel, coal, coke,
enters and wanders through the furnace in the axial direction, after it has given up the zinc from the solid aggregate state in the form of zinc vapors, at the other end of the furnace in a chemically modified form as a usable product or waste.
In contrast, in the method according to the invention, the heat of reaction generated in the furnace atmosphere of a rotating drum is fed to the furnace charge to bring about the melt flow and to convert the melt into the form of vapor.
In this case, it is possible to keep the continuous process continuously upright. if the external heat supply is completely cut off, while the smelting process breaks off, if the external fuel (coal, coke) supply ceases, and even if the zinc vapors in the rotary drum are used Bringing combustion.
: Auf .der drawing an embodiment example of a device suitable for carrying out the method is shown. FIG. 1 is the device in longitudinal section, while FIG. 2 shows the cross section along line 2-2 of FIG.
In the drawing, c denotes a device which supplies the external heat necessary to start the process, a. is .the duct of a furnace and g is a duct through which. the burnt tin vapors are discharged.
A grate furnace is shown as an example of the device that delivers the heat of the kiss to start the process. Instead of the same, however, any other type of furnace, for example an oil furnace, a gas furnace, etc. or an electrical heating device can be used.
The] channel a is designed as a rotating drum which is supported on rollers k and by means of gears r :, r-. and a worm drive r3. can be rotated by a controllable and reversible electric motor r. ±. The metallic substance to be melted, for example zinc, is introduced into the channel a in any desired manner, for example through a closable opening h.
When the process is started, the zinc or the zinc-containing alloy previously introduced into the channel a is melted by means of the heating device c.
The zinc fumes coming from the bath; ; dough, ge long with the air flowing through the opening d into the channel a for combustion and then flow through: the opening f into the channel g and from here for the purpose of compression to zinc white in a collecting device not shown in the drawing. The opening d with its lower surface dl is always higher than the bath surface, so that the air sweeps over the bath surface at a certain height.
If the combustion process of the zinc vapors has started, then: depending on the number of revolutions of the drum used, the heating c can be switched off entirely or for the most part, since the heat of reaction obtained as a result of the combustion of the zinc vapors ensures that the metal bath b brought metal blocks into a liquid state and the zinc vapors are continuously replaced by surface evaporation.
The air required for the combustion of the zinc vapors can flow in through the gap na or through inlet openings provided separately for this purpose on the heating device. To burn the zinc vapors, however, c-in stream of C02 can also be used in a known manner, which is expediently supplied by the furnace c itself.
During the combustion.d, the zinc vapors, the drum a is rotated continuously or intermittently. As a result, the bulge a1, a = heated by the heat of reaction comes under the metal bath, so that the bottom of the metal bath is kept at the (r-desired high temperature by the heat of reaction, and that heat is thereby lost.; T, which would otherwise arise on the ground due to the absence of underfloor heating by means of external heat is eliminated.
The method can also be carried out in such a way that the drum a is not rotated continuously during the combustion of the zinc vapors, but only rotated intermittently if it proves to be expedient that the drum parts a1, a - Aufspeiol-end heat under the Me tallbad b to- ..n, The furnace can also be turned back and forth.
The rotation of the drum also makes it possible to control the quality of the zinc white to be produced in a simple manner, for which purpose the drum a is provided with a drive that is equipped with any desired means for changing the number of revolutions. Increasing the speed of rotation of the drum a also increases the rate of evaporation of the zinc, while reducing the speed of rotation reduces the rate of evaporation.
The increased evaporation rate means that a relatively larger proportion of the impurities that may be contained in the bath are torn out by the zinc vapors that are removed, so that in the case of: the production of cheaper goods, the number of revolutions of the drum a is increased accordingly, where the manufacturing costs are then reduced as a result of the increased heat utilization and as a result of the reduction in the manufacturing time.
For similar reasons, a relatively heavily contaminated raw material with a smaller and a relatively moderately pure material with a larger number of revolutions of the drum can be processed if goods of the same quality are to be produced in both cases.
Any impurities that may be present in the bath, mainly lead, are also gradually deposited in the zinc bath. To collect these impurities, a recess p is expediently applied to one part of the drum a, from which the material, which is already too rich in impurities, is scooped out from time to time, for example through the opening h through or via one of the Drawing not shown, formed at the bottom of the recess p closable opening can be tapped abge.
In the embodiment shown, the channel of the furnace consists of a cylindrical rotating drum that can be rotated about a horizontal axis, but it could also consist of several such rotating drums that are connected in series to form a channel.
To maintain the oxidizing gas stream BEZW. the flow of the burned zinc vapors can use a suction device not shown in the drawing.
