Method and device for searching for metallic foreign bodies in fabric. In the fabric weaving mills, the metal needles occurring inside the fabric create considerable difficulties, as they can lead to tearing of the fabric as well as rusting to cause staining. Ver searches have already been made to find an automatic device that automatically removes the needles from the fabric web during the manufacturing process. It has been tried with both magnetic and mechanical means, but so far without success. It has also been proposed to use the electrical con tact effect of a needle when overflowing over rollers for signaling the.
These attempts, too, have not led to success, since if the needle is placed in an unfavorable position in the fabric, the fabric itself has an insulating effect and thus prevents contact. The present invention eliminates all of these difficulties in the following way. The fabric to be examined for metallic foreign bodies, for example the fabric web to be examined for needles, is passed between two electrodes, which are, for example, metal rollers electrically isolated from one another, and the rollers are laid for example, by connecting the same to the high-voltage winding of a transformer at an electrical voltage difference.
The rollers are advantageously moved so close to one another that the material can just run through without causing a current to pass through the rollers due to the insulating effect of the intermediate material. If a metallic foreign body, for example a needle, comes between the rollers, the air path between the rollers is shortened by the metal of the needle and a breakdown occurs with the formation of a spark between the two rollers at the point of the needle.
This changes the current ratios of the electrical system so that, for example, in the low-voltage winding (primary winding) of the transformer, the increasing amperage can be used to operate an electrical machine in order to immediately switch off the current of the drive device of the textile machine, for example via a relay and so bring about an immediate stop of the machine. The worker can then remove the needle with ease. The energy of the small breakdown spark that occurs is expediently kept so low by the use of so-called small transformers that it is not sufficient to cause harmful effects on the substance.
Tests have shown that this device is extremely sensitive and works absolutely safely. It makes the machine completely independent of the worker’s attention, since it automatically stops the machine if such troublesome needles occur in the fabric.
For the concept of the invention, it does not matter whether the voltage applied to the rollers, as indicated for example in the accompanying drawing, is supplied by an AC transformer 1 or by a DC power source. It is essential that the needles 4 passing through, for example, between the two rollers 2, 3 act by reducing the air path between the rollers. Instead of the two rollers, electrodes in the form of flat surfaces can also be used, between which the web of material 5 runs. For the essence of the invention, this is be long. A roller could also be made to interact with a flat surface.
It is also not necessary to use the electrical circuit caused by the foreign body to automatically switch off the machine. Rather, one can content oneself with making an optical or acoustic signal that is fully dependent on the relevant circuit appear in order to draw the operator's attention to the defect in the tissue. Under certain circumstances, especially when treating light-colored fabrics, the small burn marks in the fabric caused by the spark provide a reliable means of locating foreign bodies. In such cases, one can also refrain from arranging a signaling device.
