Die Kathode braucht also weniger Quecksilber.
Device for fixing the cathode spot in mercury vapor rectifiers. Various means and devices have already been proposed for fixing the cathode spot in mercury vapor rectifiers in glass and metal housings.
For example, it is known to use an insert made of a non-atomizing Me tall. That protrudes from the cathode mercury and on which the working arc is applied.
It is also known that the cathode spot can also be fixed in that the insert is arranged below the mercury level. Under certain conditions, the cathode current pierces the thin layer of mercury located above the insert, and the cathode spot remains on the sharp edge of the insert.
Known devices of this type use iron as an insert, which is easily destroyed by the arc.
According to the invention, this disadvantage is avoided by using a mercury-covered insert made of non-atomizing metal, such as tungsten, Mdlybdenum, tantalum, or carbides, respectively. Alloys of such metals.
An embodiment of the invention is shown schematically in the drawing. cc is the rectifier housing with the cathode container b and the cooling device c for the cathode. The insert d is built into the cathode container, the upper surface of which is completely covered by a thin layer of the cathode mercury.
The insert d is provided with perforations or bores e of any shape or size through which the cathode mercury passes.
After the rectifier has been ignited, the mercury layer above the insert is pushed through by the cathode current, and the cathode spot is, as shown in the drawing, on the edge of one of the bores e.
At higher currents it can happen that the working arc is distributed over several drill lines. If the cathode spot is fixed, the amount of mercury evaporating drops to '/ 3 to' / "o. The cathode therefore needs less mercury.
The device according to the invention has the great advantage over the known of the smaller amount of mercury vapor and thus greater operational reliability. In addition, good cooling of the Natholenqueclc- silver is possible because, as a result of the lower requirement for mercury, its layer thickness is smaller. The cathode container can be insulated or connected to the rectifier housing in a non-insulated manner.
All metals that are difficult to atomize and that do not form an amalgam with mercury, such as v # rellfram, molybdenum, tautal etc., or. Carbides or alloys of these metals.
If a thin, perforated metal sheet "s-o- is used as an insert, it is advisable to provide hollow cylindrical attachments to the holes that are directed towards the working area of the rectifier. These attachments can be punched or welded from the material with the holes at the same time.
Such inserts can also be attached directly to the bottom of the cathode plate without an intermediate mercury layer. In this case, the inserts must not have any openings, but only recesses. You can also use inserts in the form of spirals or grid-shaped inserts. or those in the form of rods or tubes that are directed towards the work area and are distributed over the surface of the testicle base plate.
