La fig. 1 montre, en coupe diamétrale et en plan, une capsule -de frein, dans laquelle le bord -du trou central est fileté par embou tissage; La fig. 2 montre le ressort de ce frein; La fig. 3, correspondant à la fig. 1, re présente une variante -de la capsule suivant laquelle le bord. du trou central a été dé coupé et relevé en hélice pour obtenir le filet voulu; La fig. 4 montre, en élévation et en plan, l'ensemble des deux pièces .assemblées; La fig. 5 est une vue en plan .du frein coincé; La fig. 6 est la même vue, du frein ou vert;
La fig. 7 montre une autre variante de frein d'écrou, dans laquelle l'extrémitédit ressort opposée à la pointe de coinçage est allongée et recourbée en boucle, à l'extériei-::- de la capsule, pour permettre la manoeuvre du ressort; La fig. 8 représente, en élévation et en plan, un frein d'écrou, dans lequel a été sup primée la troisième encoche de la capsule; La fig. 9 représente un dispositif iden tique à celui de la fig. 8, mais comportant deux ressorts symétriques;
Suivant la forme d'exécution représentée en fig. 1.-à 6, le frein @d"écrou se compose es sentiellement de deux parties: 1o Une capsule A, en tôle emboutie, dont la ceinture extérieure g est préférablement moletée pour faciliter le vissage à la main et qui porte les échancrures inégalesa, b, c; le bord h du trou central de la capsule est amené @à prendre la. forme d'une hélice, de mëme pas que le filetage de l'écrou auquel le frein est destiné;
Nut lock. Nut locks are known in les- queils a steel wire spring is held in a brake body capable of being screwed ser on a threaded rod, one end of said spring being bent and pointed so as to. form a small branch or tooth which is elastically applied to the threads of the bolt and in which it bites when the brake body is urged in the direction of unscrewing, thus preventing the wise unscrewing of the brake body.
In this type of nut lock. tooth or branch -de jamming works in the manner of a cutting tool, which can be seen if one tries to unscrew such a brake with a wrench having a sufficiently long lever arm; we see. when the tooth cuts a chip on the threads.
The present invention relates to a nut lock based on the well-known mechanical principle called "bracing"; this nut lock is characterized by a rigid wedging rod supported by a brake body capable of being screwed onto a threaded rod, this wedging rod being articulated at a dc-, its points on said brake body in a manner to be able to pivot -at least in the, di- rc-ction according to which the rod -de wedging is applied between the threads ide .la threaded rod,
this cement wedge rod being ide more elastically pressed between said threads -of the threaded rod, the angle formed by the straight line joining the point of articulation of said wedging rod to the point of support on these threads with the straight line joining said point of articulation to the axis of the threaded rod being very sharp without however being zero.
It follows from this construction that when a relative displacement -of the threaded rod and of the brake body tends to occur in the unscrewing direction, the wedging branch is actually braced between the threads of the rod by tending to rotate around its pivot. This type of brake has proved to be infinitely more effective in use than those known so far; .braking safety no longer .depends on the brittleness of a hardened steel point which penetrates into the 4th metal of the bolt since the wedging rod is preferably left unsheared so that it presses firmly on the two sides of the nets between which it is located.
In the description which follows, some embodiments of a nut lock according to the invention will be described, in which the elastic means for pressing the wedging rod between the threads @de the threaded rod. form with this clamping rod a whole in one piece consisting of a res out of specially shaped steel wire.
The appended drawing, given only by way of example, represents some embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows, in diametral section and in plan, a brake capsule, in which the edge of the central hole is threaded by embou weaving; Fig. 2 shows the spring of this brake; Fig. 3, corresponding to FIG. 1, re presents a variant -de the capsule along which the edge. of the central hole was cut and raised in a helix to obtain the desired thread; Fig. 4 shows, in elevation and in plan, all of the two assembled parts; Fig. 5 is a plan view of the stuck brake; Fig. 6 is the same view, of the brake or green;
Fig. 7 shows another variant of nut lock, in which the end said spring opposite to the wedging point is elongated and curved in a loop, on the outside of the capsule, to allow the operation of the spring; Fig. 8 shows, in elevation and in plan, a nut lock, in which the third notch of the capsule has been removed; Fig. 9 represents a device identical to that of FIG. 8, but comprising two symmetrical springs;
Fig. 10 shows, in plan, a variant of the brake comprising a spring in the form of a hook; Figs. 10a and lob relate to the operation of the variant shown in FIG. 10; Fig. 11 shows the same device, with two springs; Fig. 12 shows, in elevation and in plan, the same device in which the res comes out comprises a bent branch of my: n # work; The fi-. 13 and 14 relate to a variant according to which the brake is produced on the nut itself.
According to the embodiment shown in FIG. 1.-to 6, the brake @d "nut consists essentially of two parts: 1o A capsule A, in stamped sheet metal, the outer belt g of which is preferably knurled to facilitate screwing by hand and which bears the unequal notches a, b, c; the edge h of the central hole of the capsule is made @ to take the form of a propeller, in the same way as the thread of the nut for which the brake is intended ;
this deformation of the edge h can be carried out, either by stamping, after having previously cut a strip i radial notch which allows the deformation, or by making a spiral slot k on the bottom of the washer and by raising in a 'helix the segment m thus cut out on the bottom, or by any other suitable means; in all cases, we give the edge h, thus deformed, the profile of a helix not even having the corresponding nut:. The fi-. 1 relates to the first deformation mode; fig. 3 relates to the second method.
2e A brake spring B in piano wire, having a shape similar to that shown in fig. 2, comprising mainly: a point p, intended for wedging between two threads of the nut, an elbow d , intended to pivot in the notch a of the capsule, a loop e whose displacement in the notch b limits the stroke of the spring and an elbow f close to the end opposite the point p and intended to be wedged in the notch c.
The operation of this nut lock is as follows: The spring B being in the open position, as shown in fig. 6; that is to say the brake not acting on the bolt thread, the heel d of the brake B is engaged in the notch a of the washer A; the guide loop: is pressed -in the notch b against the edge closest to the hole a; the heel f of the brake is wedged in the notch c and the tip p of the brake is spaced from the thread of the bolt. In this position, the capsule rotates freely on the bolt, it can be screwed and unscrewed at will.
By pulling on the spring loop, it is rotated. In the capsule in the direction of the arrow t, around .the notch a; the brake heel escapes: from notch c, ball e abuts against the other edge of hole b; the point p presses on the thread of the bolt ,, 'c y gets stuck when you want to: unscrew the nut. The branch p forming a point is calculated -of length such that when it bears on the thread of the bolt, it forms a very small angle with respect to the line a - o joining the notch a: in the center o - bou lon; - in this way, the branch does indeed cause absolute jamming, if Von tries to unscrew the washer A.
This stuck brake position is shown in fig. 5.
To be able to: unscrew the bolt, the spring B must be operated in the opposite direction, that is to say according to the arrow s, so as to bring the heel f back into the notch c and thus move the point p, of the bolt thread.
According to an improvement, represented fi-. 7, the spring B can be extended at its end opposite to the wedging point, so as to pass through the capsule A through a suitable hole v; this end can be fitted with a loop q, a button or any suitable organ allowing: to pull the spring out to wedge the point p in the thread of the bolt or,: on the contrary, to push it to release da.dite point and allow the wise unscrewing of the nut.
The operation of the brake can also be easily performed, thanks to the device shown in FIG. 8. This device does not: differ from that of FIG. 6 only by removing the notch c of the cap A. In this way, the spring B tends to always stay engaged on the thread of the bolt or screw. To unscrew it, you have to insert a conical pin!) In the loop e.
The same embodiment is shown in FIG. 9, but the device has two. symmetrical brakes; the wise unscrewing pin I) is: then in the shape of a horseshoe with two points engaging, at the same time, in the loops e, of the brakes.
Fig. 10 shows a simplified embodiment more particularly suitable for large bolts such as railroad fishplate bolts. In this embodiment, the cap sule A -its outer edge. Cut out so as to form slots x. The brake B in piano wire has the shape of a simple hook with two unequal branches = the y and z, with a small bump z1 on the: branch z.
The operation is: as follows: With the brake in place, according to fig. 10, the two: branches y and z tending to separate from one another, the point p gets stuck -in the thread -of the bolt, the bump c ', from the branch z, comes take support in the groove of the capsule,. at the edge of a slot x and the loop d in another. slot.
To remove the brake (fig. 10a), we pledge the pierced end of the pin H on the end of the branch z and: we operate in three movements: we do: first bend the branch z in the direction: from arrow I until the bump zl is cleared to the right of the slot; then, as a result of the elasticity, the branch z returns in the opposite direction following arrow 2 and emerges of itself from the groove @de la. capsule. Finally, .on push on the hook, following arrow 3; this one emerges, also early -from the net.
For the installation fflg. 10b), the capsule A is first screwed onto the bolt until it bears on the nut, then the hook is placed by hand according to the position shown, the large branch z coming out of the 'one of the slots and' the small branch being engaged therein in the thread @ of the bolt. At the end, using the: pin H,: one pushes fully, on the, branch z, in the direction of arrow 5 until the loop d is brought into one of the slots; you have to push hard, because in this movement you have to bring together: the -two branches @ of the hook.
Of course, the device can be used, as shown in FIG. 11., two brakes placed symmetrically; in this way, the cap A can neither be screwed nor unscrewed.
Fig. 12 represents the same realization with one or two brakes, but with the branches z folded back 90 in V so as to be able to operate the brake by hand through its curved ends and without having use of the pierced H.
Figs. 13 and 14 show another variant, in which the nut locking device is produced on the nut itself; there is therefore no capsule A, the latter being replaced in the assembly by the nut E itself, in the section -of which a housing has been milled having the same shape as the capsule < I> A described above; this housing u therefore comprises the notches a, b, c for the release of the spring B; and the nut is preferably closed by a C washer.
The operation of this device is the same as that which has been described for a two-piece brake.
Of course, the invention is in no way limited to the details of execution shown and described which have been chosen only by way of example. The different parts making up the brake can accommodate all variants of shape, size and arrangement. The outer shape of the capsule may be round or polygonal (hexagonal, for example). One can add, if desired, a ron delle .de plugging -of the capsule A, said washer being pierced with a hole for: the free passage of the bolt.
