Process and device for the production of carbon dioxide directly from liquid carbon dioxide. It is known that solid carbon dioxide, so-called carbon dioxide snow, can be produced by letting liquid carbon dioxide expand to atmospheric tension, catching the snow by filtration and supplying the vapors formed to re-liquefy the low-pressure cylinder of the compressor. Normally, the withdrawn gases are used at the same time to pre-cool the liquid to be relaxed.
The loose snow is then brought to a greater specific weight under large presses, y = approx. 1, whereby approx. 10% sublimes and has to be accepted as a loss.
In contrast to the known method, the present invention buried the production of carbonated ice in a single operation in a simple, physical way.
The present method consists in the fact that wet snow is produced by an initial relaxation of the liquid carbonic acid to a tension which corresponds to the triple point of the carbonic acid, and ice is produced by further relaxation.
An embodiment of a device suitable for carrying out the method is shown in section in FIG. 1 of the drawing. Fig. 2 shows a detail (nozzle) in section and on a larger scale.
The device shown has an upright expansion vessel 1 for liquid carbon dioxide, which is fed through a line 2 to a nozzle piece 4 inserted into the cover 3. The expansion nozzle 5 of the nozzle piece 4 goes directly into a diffuser 5a. In the expansion nozzle 5, the liquid carbon dioxide is first expanded to a voltage below the triple point (approximately <B> -56.60) </B> of the carbon dioxide in order to achieve snow with certainty. The diffuser compresses the snow and gas again to a tension slightly above the triple point.
This pressure is between 5 and 6 atm. absolutely. This results in wet snow. The wet snow ejected from the diffuser is taken up by a filter 6 on which the snow gradually grows to form a block. On the removable bottom 7 of the expansion vessel 1, a line 9 which can be closed at 8 is connected. With the same is a line 10 in connection, which is above an upper: filter 11 on the cover 3 is closed. The line 10 can be terminated at 12.
Lockable branch lines 13 and 14 lead to the low-pressure cylinder and to the high-pressure cylinder, for example a two-stage compressor (not shown), so that it is possible by closing or opening one or the other of the closing elements 8 and 12 or by corresponding alternately Open the same or by supplying more or less liquid from the line 2 to regulate the pressure in the expansion vessel 1 as required.
Depending on the desired final pressure in the expansion vessel and depending on the intended density of the carbon dioxide snow, the throttle vapors formed or only a part of them are sucked off through the snow block. These throttle vapors, which diffuse through the moist, plastic mass of snow, create an icy mass with a high specific weight of up to 1.45 that adheres firmly together.
In addition to the dense product, working with a higher final pressure has the advantage that a compressor with relatively small dimensions can be selected and the required compression work due to the high suction pressure is correspondingly lower than when sucking in one atmosphere .
When the desired height of the snow block is reached, the connection of the expansion vessel with the high pressure cylinder is interrupted and that with the low pressure cylinder is established, the valve in the line 2 being closed. As a result, the pressure in the expansion vessel is reduced to atmospheric tension and, as a result of the temperature drop to <B> -80 '</B>, the wet mass of snow solidifies: that is, ice is formed. If the bottom 7 of the expansion vessel with the filter 6 is removed, the ice block can be removed from the bottom of the expansion vessel in its cross-section in the customary form, whereby:
the inevitable losses due to radiation in known methods do not occur. After closing the expansion vessel, the process described can be repeated again. The pulling grass can be used during operation to cool the liquid carbonic acid to be relaxed, thereby increasing the efficiency of the process further.
With the method described, a dense carbonic acid ice is achieved in one operation and without the aid of a press.
