Process for refining mixtures of metals. The present invention relates to a method for refining mixtures of metals. According to this process, the molten metal mixture is continuously passed through a zone with the exclusion of air, the temperature of which exceeds the boiling temperature of at least one of its constituents, in such a way that at least one of the constituents is distilled away and a separation takes place in at least two fractions.
Mainly raw metals, scrap metals and alloys come into consideration as the metal mixture.
With the aid of the present process, metals can be freed from the impurities that have been mixed in, and metal mixtures can be separated into two or more fractions. The method allows the possibility of alloys that are worthless in themselves, e.g. B. From fall metals, to make usable by breaking them down into technically valuable components.
It is not said that the product sought is always the distillate; under certain circumstances the residue can represent the valuable component and both parts can also be usable. It can also be the case that several fractions are obtained, each of which forms a valuable product in itself.
The process can be carried out in vacuo or in the presence of inert gases.
The heating can be done in any suitable manner, e.g. B. by direct or indirect electrical resistance heating, by an electric arc, by alternating current induction, high frequency induction, by heat-releasing rays such as cathode rays or other electrical rays, by heat rays.
Under certain circumstances it is advisable to bring the molten metal to a temperature which exceeds the boiling temperature of at least one of the constituents before it enters the highly heated zone.
The metal mixture flowing through the highly heated zone is expediently removed by suitable means, e.g. B. put in the way mechanical resistances, kept in intensive motion.
Example: From materials containing aluminum, such as bauxite, kaolin etc., an alloy can be produced by electrothermal means with the addition of coal, which contains aluminum together with iron, silicon, titanium etc., contaminated by carbon, oxygen, nitrogen. Up to now this alloy has not found any technical use: using the present process, the aluminum can be separated from it in a pure state. To this end, the molten alloy is continuously passed through a zone whose temperature is above the boiling point of the aluminum.
It is expedient to use the device shown in the accompanying drawing as an exemplary embodiment in a longitudinal section.
On a base plate ca with a pipe c in connection sheet metal jacket b, through the upper wall of a metal made of difficult to melt, is guided to the positive pole of a power source connected electrode is attached airtight.
Enclosing jacket and base plate, on all sides at a suitable distance from a completely Lich made of highly refractory material, which includes a base f, a tub e and a hood g. The hood g has an opening at the top for the passage of the positive electrode, the latter reaching down at least to the vicinity of the tub. The inner surfaces of the tub are provided with nose-like or hump-like projections h, the purposes of which will be explained below.
i is an inlet pipe that is tightly guided from the outside through the base plate a, the base f and the bottom of the tub e, which opens into a horizontally directed snout inside the latter, while its other end is connected to the one to be subjected to the treatment Alloy-filled reservoir is in communication. Parallel to i and co-axially to the positive electrode is a similar Licher way the inside of the tub with the outside connecting drain pipe k is brought up, which extends up a little higher than i and "open at the top.
The base f has a funnel-like cavity below the tub, from which a tube 1 leads to the outside through the base plate cc. The pipes i, k and l are also made of refractory material.
For commissioning, the device is connected to an air pump by means of tube c and vented. After this has been done, the molten aluminum alloy is allowed to flow through the tube i into the tank e, the inflow being suitably regulated by a device (not shown in the drawing). The column of liquid metal moving in the tube i is connected to the negative pole of the power source to which the aforementioned cathode is connected and the latter is adjusted by moving it so that an arc is created between it and the metal bath in the tub forms.
With a suitably selected current strength and appropriate regulation of the alloy inflow, the aluminum now evaporates, while the metal mixture forming the residue (the second fraction) flows continuously through k and fresh alloy flows in through i. The evaporated aluminum (fraction I) condenses on the walls of the hood g, flows through the mentioned funnel and the pipe l and is caught outside the device in an evacuated vessel connected to l. The pipe k also opens outside the device into an evacuated vessel in which fraction II collects.
The flow of the melt material comes about because the level of the raw metal to be flowed is higher than the level in the vessel where the flowing metal collects. The level difference in the two vessels with the original raw metal on the one hand and the higher boiling part of the alloy on the other, determines the speed of the flow.
In the trough e, obstacles in the form of nose-like or hump-like projections face the flowing metal, which creates a stirring effect.
Before it is subjected to the fractional distillation described, the electrothermally produced aluminum alloy can first be separated into a heavier and a lighter part, for example by means of Saigern, and only the lighter part can be subjected to distillation.
Instead of evacuating the device, it can be filled with an inert gas or gas mixture. The described method for the production of aluminum has the following advantages over the known production methods 1. One is not dependent on Faraday's law; 2. Electrothermally, about three times the yield of aluminum can be achieved from aluminum-containing material, compared to the electrolytic process from cryolite molten earth; 3. The non-aluminum-containing part of the raw material is obtained as an iron alloy, while it is obtained as worthless sludge in the usual aluminum production process; 4th
There is no loss of fluorine; 5. The aluminum obtained by fractional distillation is gas-free and of high purity, which increases its possible use, namely for electrical cables, for the production of heat-treatable alloys and for the production of chemically stressed commodities.
