Vehicle roof. It is undeniable that nowadays, in demotion, closed vehicles, interior conduits, convertibles, coupes, limousines, etc., tend to replace more every day the so-called torpedo cars, and designed without a roof.
It is certain that closed cars present notable advantages over the latter. The occupants while enjoying perfect visibility, are completely sheltered from rain, sun, dust, wind, etc.
These closed vehicles, however, have serious flaws. In summer, the interior can become overheated, especially after prolonged parking in the sun. This results in real discomfort for travelers. In addition, the smoke and odors are stored there and quickly vitiate the air confined in the car.
The object of the present invention is a vehicle roof comprising two superimposed walls between which there is a free space closed laterally and open at its anterior and posterior ends, means being provided near these ends to seal and open them. at will from inside the vehicle.
This roof is characterized in that the openings at the ends of the aforementioned space are arranged respectively under the eaves and in the rear part of the body of the vehicle, the whole being such that these openings and the means for them. opening and closing them are practically invisible from the outside. of the vehicle, so that the latter hardly differs from an ordinary vehicle, from a profile and aesthetic point of view.
Its purpose is to allow not only the cooling or cooling of the interior during the hot season, but to prevent any loss of heat in winter. It allows perfect ventilation and rapid and complete evacuation of fumes and odors. Moreover, it leaves each occupant the possibility of placing himself in the conditions which please him, without the neighbors being inconvenienced. Finally, it does not make any modification to the exterior line of the car, leaving it its original purity.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the roof.
Fig. 1 gives a longitudinal section made along the plane of symmetry of the car; Fig. 2 shows the mesh placed at the air inlet between the two ceilings, while FIG. 3 shows the air outlet grid, each showing moreover the ends of the side members separating the longitudinal compartments; Finally, figs. 4 and 5 give, the first a closed intake flap, the second the same open flap, both with the operating lever.
The roof comprises a sapphire wall a and a lower wall b which constitutes the ceiling of the vehicle, these two walls leaving between them, over the entire length of the bodywork, a free space c which is divided between four longitudinal compartments by low section side members. The number of these compartments could however be different from four. The space c could also not be thus divided longitudinally.
At the front, the air intake is completely dis simulated by the eaves d. It is fitted with a grid, which fits exactly at the beginning of each compartment. Its aim is to oppose the introduction between the two ceilings of sects, dust, leaves, gravel, etc. which would eventually fall inside.
At the rear, the air outlet is also fitted with a mesh f, which fits into the outlet orifice of each compartment.
It is interesting to note (fig. 1) that this air outlet is completely invisible and that it does not in any way destroy the exterior appearance of the car. It is done after the rounded or ridge of the roof, against the rear window g, which for this purpose is very slightly inclined at its upper part, towards the interior.
The remarkable location of this air outlet therefore makes it possible to achieve the shape described for all forms of coachwork, even the most troubled or the most original.
The air intake between the two walls is controlled at the inlet of each compartment by a flap h, operated by a lever j. The air outlet at the rear is also controlled by an identical flap h 'provided with a lever j' obstructing or opening the section of each compartment.
Thus, there are as many inlet flaps and outlet flaps as there are compartments or longitudinal channels. This arrangement allows all possible combinations of air circulation in the roof. This is how the compartments can be all open or all closed. They can be some open, others closed. In the open compartments the air circulates continuously from front to back and is constantly renewed. In closed compartments the volume of air is trapped and remains in static equilibrium.
The operation of these flaps is very easily performed by the occupant, without the latter having to move, much less without the car having to slow down or stop. It is easily understood by the example of FIGS. 4 and 5. The handle j which can pivot around the Z axis is connected to the shutter h. by two arms articulated in m. Two hinges n and o allow the folding or the straightening of the shutter, that is to say the opening or the obstruction of the corresponding compartment.
In suitable places, that is to say slightly in front of the seats, the lower wall is provided with air intakes such as p at the front and q at the rear, easily manoeuvrable by the passengers. Each socket is constituted by an opening made in this wall and which is blocked by a shutter capable of pivoting about its transverse axis by the simple operation of an easily accessible handle.
In the front seats, this air intake has been shown open, the shutter being tilted forward. If the corresponding shutter h is open, it is certain that the person seated opposite this air intake will directly receive the fresh air coming from outside through the corresponding channel.
In the rear seats, the air intake q has been shown closed, that is to say in the plane of the lower wall b, and open, the shutter being inclined. In the first case, the air follows the length of the channel and comes out at the rear, substantially vertically, at the junction of the upper part of the rear window of the vehicle and of the standard body. The person seated under this socket will therefore be completely protected from the air. We can thus see that for two persons interested in the same longitudinal compartment, that is to say placed one behind the other, it is possible to obtain the desired ventilation individually, independently of the other person. , and practically without embarrassment for it.
With the shutter tilted backwards, outside air also enters, but after meeting the shutter which deflected and braked it. It arrives without appreciable speed, giving a refreshment, without hitting the face directly.
Absolute independence also exists for two travelers placed side by side. Everyone can shelter from the air, or ventilate practically, without the neighbor being inconvenienced.
The evacuation of fumes or odors is done by the same maneuvers. It is important to note that the evacuation and ventilation are obtained without ever having to open the side windows or the front one. This is a very serious advantage.
In winter, it is sufficient to close both the inlet and outlet flaps. Hand held in static equilibrium, without appreciable movement, the layer of air contained between the two ceilings, forms an insulating layer from a thermal point of view and is opposed to heat loss.
It should be noted that, as the drawing shows, the front and rear openings of space c as well as the means for opening and closing them are practically invisible from the exterior of the vehicle, so that the latter cannot be distinguished. hardly any ordinary vehicle, from a profile and aesthetic point of view.
