Description

Process for soaking electrical capacitors with insulating material. The invention relates to such electrical capacitors whose dielectric is treated with an impregnating compound consisting mainly or entirely of sulfur. In the manufacture of these capacitors, when the sulfur solidifies, cavities are created in the capacitor due to its rapid shrinkage, which fill with air. In order to avoid this inconvenience, the capacitors according to the invention are immersed in a suitable insulating material with a lower melting point immediately after they have been soaked with sulfur, that is, as long as it is still liquid.

When the sulfur solidifies, only the second insulating material can be sucked into the cavities forming in the capacitor, but no air.

Mon tan wax, for example, whose melting point is between 70 and 80 Celsius, is suitable as an insulating material for re-soaking the dielectric. The capacitors post-treated with this substance have the high dielectric strength of the capacitors only impregnated with Mon tan wax, but without showing their disadvantage. This consists in the fact that the montan wax flows out of the condenser when it is heated above its melting point, so that condensers which have only been soaked with montan wax are very sensitive to heat. But if montan wax is only used to refill the cavities of the sulfur-soaked capacitor, the capacitor remains usable up to the melting point of the sulfur.

The montan wax, which becomes liquid when the condenser is heated, cannot flow out because it is held in place by capillary action.
