Description

Process for the production of highly acid-resistant iron castings. The production of highly acid-resistant iron alloys with the silicon content required for this purpose is carried out according to the previously known processes in such a way that high-percentage ferrosilicon and low-carbon iron are never melted either in the same or in different melting opportunities and are mixed in such a ratio that the The end product has the desired silicon content.

All of these processes therefore require the use of two different starting materials in the foundry, which makes the process relatively cumbersome.

Attempts by the applicant with various starting materials and various melting opportunities have shown that a highly acid-resistant cast iron that meets all requirements can be achieved in a simple and economical manner by simply placing a silicon alloy with a certain amount of silicon in a furnace melts, which excludes an accumulation of carbon and then pours directly into the molds.

It is only necessary to take into account that the proportion of silicon content of the starting material is selected to be so much higher than that of the desired end product that it compensates for the silicon burn-off that has been found in the furnace. The electric furnace, the oil-fired flak cupola furnace and others that also allow the relatively high temperatures required for the process to be achieved are, for example, suitable melting facilities.

In order to get an 18% silicon casting, one melts, for example, Fe-Si with 22% silicon content in one of the type furnaces, the silicon content being reduced by about d to 18% due to burn-off. If necessary, any further additives that may be desired are simultaneously melted down in the furnace. This molten alloy can then be easily poured into the molds.

PATENT CLAIM: Process for the production of highly acid-resistant iron castings from silicon-containing iron alloys, characterized in that an Fe-Si alloy is melted down in a furnace that prevents the alloy from being enriched in carbon and is cast directly from it, the initial silicon content being the Alloy is chosen to be so much higher than that of the finished castings than corresponds to the amount of silicon consumed by experience.
