Process for manufacturing rectangular-section tubes and apparatus for its implementation. The present invention relates to a process for manufacturing metal tubes with a rectangular cross section, and in particular with a square cross section, starting from a strip whose width represents the development of the faces of the finished tube.
This process is characterized in that the tube is obtained by rolling the strip in the direction of its length between a series of shaped gaets so as to first obtain the lifting of the two elements of the continuous face, then the other three faces leaving obtuse the angles that the latter form between them, the tube then being completed by closing its angles on a mandrel along which it is driven and by making it through a final shaping die.
The appended schematic drawing shows, by way of example only, the means which allow the implementation, in its successive phases, of the process characterized above.
Figs. 1, 2 and 3 show, in elevation, three pairs of rollers, each of which carries out an operation of the method; The. Fi-. 4 is an elevation of a device for performing the fourth step of the method; Fig: 5 is a corresponding plan view; Fig. 6 shows, in front view, a die of final shaping of a tube. The tube is obtained by starting from a strip of metal the thickness of which is at least equal to that of the faces of the finished tube, and the width of which represents the development of said faces.
The first phase of the process consists in undermining the strip between two shaped rollers so as to. raise its edges to constitute the two elements of the face which, in the finished tube, is discontinuous. Between a first pair of rollers 1 (FIG. 1), the lard strip is driven and its edges are raised symmetrically in the form of flat faces 2 forming an obtuse angle with the initial phan 3 of the strip.
On leaving the rollers 1, the blank is taken up by another pair of rollers 4 (FIG. 2) which raise the elements 2 perpendicularly to the initial plane 3 of the feiiillaid. Another pair of rollers 5 gives, following the blank, the section shown in FIG. 3. The four faces of the tube are then determined, but the angles made by two Î; two the three faces 3a which do not present. no discontinuity are clearly obtuse.
The blank is then placed on a table 6 (fi- ,. -1) and its lower face 3a is engaged between this table and a mandrel 7 (fig. 4 and @) whose section corresponds to the surface circumscribed by the four 'faces of the finished tube.
Rollers 8, arranged in pairs and symmetrically with respect to the mandrel 7, gradually close the angles 3b, and the side faces 3a are applied to the ma.n- clrin by one or more pairs of rollers 9 which ensure the displacement of the blank along the mandrel, or in some cases, the angles 3b and the side faces 3a are applied to the mandrel by a ramp which starts from an obtuse angle and ends at a right angle.
The blank is finished by passing through a die made up, between at the very least possible arrangements, by a fixed part 10 (fig. 5 and 6) perforated with a hole 11 which corresponds to the shape and the e-xterior dimensions of the tube. completed and which envelops the mandrel 7, leaving between the latter and the walls (the hole 11 the space for the passage of the tube for the final shaping of the latter. To facilitate the exit of the tube from the die. - it can be pulled by a set of knobs which tighten it lightly on all four sides.
The apparatus can be provided so that one can add a number of oti to the front, sets of knurls, in order to allow the manufacture of bi-metal tubes.
The figures of the accompanying drawing are simple diagrams sufficient for understanding the process. object. of the invention, and movons which allow its implementation. The embodiments of these means of implementation can be extremely variable. The number of pairs of shaping rollers can be any, as well as their control mechanisms. This number will vary depending on the mechanical characteristics of the metal to be. constitute the tube.
With very malleable metals, it is po.s-, ihle to confuse in a single the phases of the process illustrated by fig. 1 and?.
It will be noted, with regard to the finishing device of FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, that the mandrel 7 must: be suitably supported, for example, at its end 7a. in the vertical direction, its position, beyond this end 7a. being determined by the rollers 9, the die 1 (i and: the thickness of the metal which constitutes the 1ub! -. 'routes these detailed arrangements are obviously included within the scope of the invention.
