Lighting device. The present invention relates to an improved shadowless illumination device which is of general use, but is particularly advantageous for dental and surgical applications.
According to the present invention the device comprises a support frame having lamp-holder arms which radiate from a common point, the frame being of adjustable position and orientation and the various lamps being angularly adjustable so as to allow focusing the rays coming from the various lamps on a common point.
The accompanying drawing represents two embodiments of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the first embodiment of the device; Fig. 2 is a partial side elevation, on a larger scale, some parts being in section; Figs. 3 and 4 show details of fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a view similar to FIG. 1 and partially shows the second embodiment of the device; Fig. 6 is. partial elevation. Referring to the drawing and particularly to figs. 1 to 4, it can be seen that 10 denotes a tubular base support and 11 an adjustable tube in this base.
The tube 11 may be of any suitable length to extend, for example, over a dentist's chair. An elbow 12 is carried by the upper end of the tube and carries a stirrup 13; between the parallel branches 14 of this stirrup and the shank 16 of a fitting 17, fiber washers 15 have been interposed. On the opposite side of the fitting extends a shank 18 which is perpendicular to the shank 16 and revises the stirrup 19 a tubular element 20. Fiber washers are also arranged between the stirrup 19 and the barrel 18. The two stirrups 13 and 19 and their respective barrels 16 and 18 are connected by means of bolts 21 forming pivots.
The tubular element 20 is open and contains a journal 22 which can rotate in this element, it is further provided with a pin 23 disposed tangentially and engaging in a groove 24 cut in the periphery of the journal 22. This construction allows the journal 22 to rotate without separating from the tubular element 20. It is obvious that vertical and lateral adjustments along arcs can be effected by the connection through the connection 17, while any adjustment can be made circular device by means of the tubular support provided for the journal 22.
A cover plate 25 is disposed on the end of the journal 22, this plate 25 being removably connected to a box 26, hollow, of rectangular shape, the two side walls of which and the upper and lower walls are provided with an extension. Threaded gements 27 provided with axial holes 28. The front wall of the box 26 is likewise seen of an extension provided with a threaded hole 29 intended to receive a threaded rod 31 which can be adjusted axially by rotating it. The inner end of the rod 31 carries a cone-shaped cam 32 and the outer end carries a chain wheel 33.
Each threaded extension 27 carries a tubular extension arm 341, respectively 34 @, 343, 344. It can be seen in FIG. 1 that, on the one hand, the arms 341 and 343, respectively 342 and 344 are coaxial and that, on the other hand, the arms 34 'and 34s are perpendicular to the arms 342 and 344. All the arms have a length equal and are in the same plane. Each arm is threaded at both ends, and at the outer end of each arm there is a collar 35 from which the branches of a stirrup 36 (Fig. 1).
Between the branches of each bracket is pivotally mounted a lamp comprising a casing 37 provided at one end with a convex lens 38, and the socket 39 of an electric light source at the other end. Assuming that the normal position of each envelope 37 is horizontal, as shown in solid lines in FIG. 2, any adjustment of the lamps on their pivots to direct their light rays on a desired point, is done for each lamp by a mechanism comprising a U console 40 fixed on the periphery of the casing 37 between the branches of the caliper 36. The branches 41 of the console are arranged along the envelope and are provided with parallel grooves 42, inclined towards the socket 39.
An adjustable rod 43 is resiliently mounted in each extension arm 34 and extends axially in this arm; the internal end of this rod passes through the bore 28 and ends in a rounded part 44 which is held elastically in engagement with the surface of the conical cam 32, by a spring 47, one end of which is applied against a washer 48 and the other end of which attacks a washer 49 fixed on the rod 43 at a point far enough away from the extension 27.
The opposite end of each rod 43 carries a united link 45 which extends between the branches 41 of the caliper 40 and which is provided with pins 46, housed in free play in the grooves 42.
The carne 32 can be moved in the box 26 by means of a button 53 integral with a shaft 52. This shaft can rotate in titi support 50 fixed to the arm 34s and carries a chain wheel 54 connected with the wheel 33 by the chain 55.
When the carm 32 is in the position shown in fig. 2, the shells 37 are in the horizontal position, i.e. in their normal position, the pins 46 are in the lower end of the grooves 42, and when the taper cam 32 is pulled out , the rods 43 move inward and toward the center of the housing 26. This operation causes the pins 46 to move upward in the grooves 42 and accordingly oscillate the shells 37 on their pivots in the calipers 36 until 'so that they arrive in the position indicated in phantom in fig. 2.
The corresponding position of the cam is shown in dotted lines in fig. 2. As a result of the arrangement described, the movement of each lamp with respect to the axis of rotation of the cam takes place in such a way that the optical axes of the four lamps, when these are displaced from their normal position, are intersect at the same point. Therefore a very intense Iurninous disk will appear at this point and on any object that this disk is focused on.
Referring now to the second embodiment shown in Figs. 5 and 6, we realize that the mechanism provided at the outer ends of each extension arm 34'-344 is identical to that provided in the embodiment described first, except that each link 45 is provided at its inner end of a cylindrical part 56 comprising a threaded hole 57 to receive the threaded end of a rod 58 respectively 63 extending through the corresponding extension arm. The rods 58 of the arms 341 and 343 are integral with one another and form a single piece.
A box 59 carries the arms 341 and 343 and is provided with removable side plates 60 which carry the second pair of extension arms 342 and 344 perpendicular to the first pair 341 and 313 and in the same plane. The rod 58 which can rotate in the arms 341 and 343 carries an angle wheel 61 inside the box, this wheel 61 meshing with two opposite angle wheels 62 which are fixed to the internal ends of the rods 63. The parts 56 and the respective ends of the rods 56, 63 are threaded so that by rotating the rod 58 in one or the other direction the parts 56 move simultaneously and in the same direction relative to the box 59 .
In order to impart axial movement simultaneously and in the same direction relative to the box 59 to all the parts 56 located at the ends of the arms 341-344, the rod 58 is rotated, which is actuated by means of a button connection 53 similar as regards the assembly and the rotary shaft 51 to that already described with reference to the first embodiment, but in the second embodiment the shaft 51 is offset on one side of the extension gear 343 and carries a pinion 64 meshing with a pinion 65 fixed on the rod 58. The housing 66 for said pinions is constituted by a cast iron part inserted in the arm 343 and provided with flanges intended to be fixed to similar flanges 67 carried by the adjacent ends of the arm 343.
It will be appreciated that in either embodiment, the two extensions 342 and 344 and their lamps could also be omitted.
One mode of application of the device is for example the following: It will be assumed that the device is placed within reach of a dentist treating a client seated in the usual chair, the head tilted back cry to place the mouth in a suitable position. The dentist turns knob 53 with one hand until all the lamps have reached an appropriate inclination. As the optical axes of the lamps intersect at a point, the light disks of the different lamps overlap at this point. The dentist then switches the whole of the device onto the universal saddle connection by pressing the button 53 to direct the light point in the form of superimposed discs in the interior of the client's mouth.
We realize that as the light rays coming from the different lamps are directed along several optical axes, the mouth remains illuminated if an object intercepts one of the light sources.
In addition, it will be appreciated that the lighting device can be carried by suitable means mounted on a dentist's chair or on a special arm attached to any of the standard units used in dental offices to carry the patient. engine, instrument table, etc.
