Process for the production of low carbon mild iron or steel. The present invention relates to a method for producing low-carbon mild iron or steel from scrap.
Up to now it has been difficult to produce a bubble-free, deoxidized mild steel or steel, especially if it is a matter of low-carbon mild steel or steel, directly in Siemens-Martin furnaces, for example. It has therefore been proposed to expose the batches produced in the Siemens Martin furnace or in a Bessemer pear in special pans or vessels, so in a long work process, to the action of a negative pressure, which was generated by ejectors, air pumps, etc., in order to thereby to degas the mild steel or steel.
However, these proposals have seldom been implemented because they require complicated equipment and make the manufacture of mild iron or steel considerably more expensive.
The method according to the present invention avoids these disadvantages by creating a negative pressure in the hearth of the furnace from the onset of the scrap to the completion of the batch. The Siemens-Martin furnace and, in particular, the Bosshardt furnace are suitable for carrying out this process. The latter is to be understood as a stove of the Siemens-Martin type, as described in Swiss Patent No.
69366 is described, whose gas generators are built on the two sides of the head and are immediately adjacent to the stove and which slots in each head between the stove and your generator, in the incandescent zone of the latter gas slots and downwardly sloping air, namely in the aforementioned Rows arranged one above the other has. With such a furnace temperatures of about 2000 C can be obtained in the oven.
The negative pressure is expediently generated in a simple manner by the suction effect of the chimney connected to the stove, in that the generators are not operated with compressed air, as in the previous Siemens-Martin ovens, but the amount of air required for gasification is alternately in Operation @being gas generators is fed to the latter by the suction effect of the chimney, while the gas generator that is not in operation and the furnace heads themselves are hermetically sealed.
In order to supply the gas generator with the amount of air that corresponds to the furnace's changing gas requirements, this furnace is conveniently provided with a slider below the generator grate, which can be adjusted to regulate the amount of air sucked in through the chimney and thus the amount of gas generated .
When working with negative pressure in the manner indicated, practically complete deoxidation and degassing of the material to be melted can be achieved and a material can be produced in the hearth furnace; that has the properties of low-carbon Swedish iron, as it could previously only be produced in a crucible. Batches with only 0.05% carbon, which were practically oxygen-free, were produced during ongoing operations.
A second advantage that has been shown in the procedure described is that it was possible to determine a not insignificant carbon saving, which was up to 40%.
Furthermore, according to the method of the invention, when using ordinary, unsorted scrap without expensive surcharges, a medium-hard material of 45 to 55 kg strength, 70 to 80% yield strength and over 20% elongation can be obtained,
while the previous cheap mild iron and steel grades of the same strength do not have more than 50 to 55 0% yield strength.
Conveniently, to produce a low-carbon mild iron or steel with a high yield strength, ordinary scrap is used in the aforementioned Bosshardt furnace and melted at the oven temperature of about 2000 C above the molten bath and at negative pressure within the oven and the melt with an addition of manganese and- silicon is largely degassed and through a frying process that occurs in the oven at the high temperature
largely decarburized, so that an iron or steel with 0.05 to 0.2 / o carbon, up to 0.811 / o manganese and up to 211 / o silicon is obtained, which has a yield point of about 75 to 94% of the breaking point with one rotation from about 22 to 30 "/ o and is of tenacious, fine-grained structure.
This very largely deoxidized or degassed material is characterized by a low carbon content, a normal manganese content and an increased silicon content.
The method according to the invention can be carried out, for example, as follows: Unsorted scrap is placed in the furnace and the generators are operated alternately, with the amount of air required for gasification from the working generator and the combustion air preheated in the regenerators through the suction effect of the chimney into the hearth is promoted in which there is thus negative pressure. After the material used has melted, samples are taken from it, which are tested for their manganese and carbon content.
The desired manganese content of the sample should be about 0.8%, the carbon content 0.09% to 0.13%. If the carbon content found in the samples is too high, refreshment continues; if it is too low,
so it is carburized with electrode carbon waste. When preparing the batch, ferrosilicon is added to it in order to increase the silicon content of the iron bath up to a maximum of 2%. For example, a material produced in this way showed when analyzed 0.13 "/ o carbon, 0,
72% manganese and 1.26% silicon and, on the basis of a test by the materials testing office in Berliir-Lichterfelde, resulted in a strength of 54.8 kg, a yield point of 41 kg and an elongation of 27.3%.
For certain purposes, the silicon could be wholly or partially replaced by high-quality metals such as tungsten, nickel, colybdenum, vanadium, etc., which have a beneficial effect on the properties of the steel or mild iron produced.
For economic reasons, however, these surcharges will usually not be allowed to exceed 0.250 / 0. But even with the addition of pure silicon, that is to say in the complete absence of expensive additives such as tungsten and the like, iron or steel with a high yield point can be obtained even in the unrolled state.
The <B> '</B> oven i) can be lined with basic, so that it is suitable for melting pig iron, which comes from iron ores rich in phosphorus. At the temperatures of around 20,000 C in the hearth of the Bosshardt furnace, practically complete desulfurization and dephosphorization of the material to be melted can take place.
In addition to the Bosshardt hearth furnace, the melting process can also be carried out in an electric furnace. Attention should be paid to the most complete possible oxygen removal or oxygen removal from the melt that is to be kept as calm as possible.
