Method of treating cedar with a liquid. The invention relates to a method for treating leather with a liquid in such a way that the liquid acts on individual points of the leather, but does not act on the other parts of the leather. The liquid can be a paint, a stain, an etchant, a bleach, or the like.
According to the invention, a device for covering individual areas of the leather surface is firmly pressed against the leather, then the liquid is allowed to act on the areas of the leather exposed by the device, and finally these free areas of the leather are treated with a washing liquid.
It is necessary to press the aforementioned device firmly onto the leather to prevent the liquid used to treat the leather and the washing liquid from penetrating between the device and the leather underneath it, which would prevent sharp contours from being achieved. The device to be pressed firmly onto the leather is expediently used in the form of a template, the openings of which are arranged above half of those places on the leather where the liquid is to act.
Instead of such a stencil, stamps or similar means can also be used which, after being pressed onto the leather, cover the leather in such a way that the parts of the leather to be dyed or otherwise treated with the liquid remain free.
After the template or the substitute medium are brought into firm contact with the leather, the liquid, for example a dye solution, stain, etc., is applied or poured onto the leather. A dye, for example, is left to act on the leather until it is dyed sufficiently deep, then the dye solution is removed and the leather is washed with a suitable washing liquid, for example pure water, until all the dye is in excess has passed into the washing liquid.
During the washing, the pressure that was exerted on the stencil or the like is expediently maintained unchanged. After the washing liquid has been removed, the template is lifted off and the leather can then be subjected to the further finishing processes required by the individual types of leather.
With the repeated use of semicolons of a suitable design and different colors, it is also possible, for example, to produce multicolored patterns using the method. Likewise, the process allows pre-dyed leather to be provided with colorful patterns or. to achieve color effects by etching, bleaching, etc.
A suitable device for performing the method is shown as an example in the drawing.

Finally remove the washing liquid, loosen the screws 7e, l and take. the leather out of the device.
If you want to accelerate the application of the template to the leather and its removal from the device, which appears somewhat cumbersome when using the device described, but can actually be carried out very quickly, then the device can be designed in such a way that the template and the overlying liquid permeable deposits together with the lid are combined into one piece that can be moved up and down in a vertical guide, with the pressing against the leather being effected, for example, in the manner of a toggle press.
A device that is likewise suitable for carrying out the method is a drum on which the leather to be treated is stretched out, with a single or multiple templates being placed on the leather and pressed against it. The drum is immersed in a trough and can be rotated around a horizontal axis. The dyeing liquid, stain, etc. is introduced into the trough, which is then replaced by the washing liquid.
Another device suitable for executing the process consists of a frame on which the leather is stretched out. After applying and tightening the stencil or the like, the dye, stain, etchant etc. is sprayed against the leather.
