Method and device for the synthetic production of ammonia. According to a known method, for the synthesis of ammonia, a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen is passed through a tube containing a catalyst and heated to 400 to 600 under very high pressure, namely between 100 to 1000 or more atmospheres .
Only a small part of this mixture combines to form ammonia. For this reason, it is recommended that, after the ammonia has been removed from the reaction mixture, for example by cooling, the unconnected nitrogen and hydrogen are allowed to pass through the same catalyst again. to get a new amount of ammonia. In other words, it is advisable to carry out the process in a closed circuit, from which the ammonia formed is removed and the part that has come into contact is replaced by fresh amounts of the mixture.
The mentioned circuit can be obtained by a piston pump or a centrifugal or rotary pump operated by an electric motor or the like.
The pumps require considerable lubrication of the piston and the stuffing box, with the result that lubricating oil is entrained by the gas mixture, so that special measures are required to separate the lubricating oil and hold it back so that it does not get into the catalyst chamber and poisoned the catalyst. To hold back the oil, it is necessary to attach special devices to the circulation line, which contain a container of the right shape and size with substances which are suitable to hold back the last traces of the lubricating oil.
Such a system, equipped with a circulation pump, a device for retaining the oil and a cleaner, is expensive, both to purchase and to operate. This is understandable when one considers that the weight of the last-mentioned device alone is several tons, and that the energy used to drive the pump causes constant costs. Furthermore, the loss of oils and cleaning agents must be replaced.
A loss of the compressed gas mixture can also occur as a result of leaks in the stuffing boxes of the circulation pump, while further losses of gas are unavoidable both when the oil is withdrawn from the device for retaining the lubricating oil and when the cleaning substance in the cleaner is changed are. These losses become all the more significant the greater the amount of the mixture to be cleaned. Accordingly, the ammonia yield becomes lower.
The present invention now relates to a method for the synthetic production of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen with recycling of the gas mixture, at least partially freed from ammonia, to the catalyst in an uninterrupted cycle, in which the aforementioned inconveniences are avoided.
According to this method, the fresh gas mixture, which has not yet been in contact with the catalyst, is compressed to a pressure which corresponds to that of the gas mixture to be circulated by at least 10 atm. and then passed into an injector, where it may .the above-mentioned higher pressure, it.acting as a driving medium, it creates the cycle.
The latter is thus obtained at the expense of the energy of the gas mixture coming directly from the compressor by means of an organ which requires no lubrication at all, or at most very little.
The drawing illustrates, for example, a device useful for practicing the method; 1 shows an embodiment of the overall system in elevation, FIG. 2 shows one of the injector in vertical section.
1 is the pipe that feeds the fresh gas mixture from the compressor into the injector.
2 is the injector, which is fed with the fresh gas mixture coming from the compressor at overpressure and causes the gas mixture to circulate at least partially from the ammonia. 3 is the catalyst tube.
4 and 5 is the apparatus for separating the ammonia, which in the present case consists of the cooler 4 with a container 5 for collecting the ammonia.
6 is the pipe through which the unbound gas mixture flows back from the aforementioned separator into the injector.
In Fig. 2, a denotes a steel body with very thick walls, b is a diffusion cone, c a nozzle, d a regulating needle for the nozzle, e a stuffing box, fine filter to retain impurities that could clog the nozzle.
The fresh gas mixture enters the injector at A, with a pressure which is equal to that of the gas mixture returning from the catalyst and ammonia separator by at least 10 atm. exceeds. It passes through the filter f and, flowing out of the nozzle c at high speed, carries away with it the gas mixture entering at B from the devices 4 and 5 after the ammonia has been removed.
