The amount of air required to operate modern blast furnaces is generally so large that the fans are divided into two groups that work in parallel. The groups are housed in a housing and are built for the same amount of air and the same pressure. Operation of the blast furnace now requires higher pressure at times with partly greater and partly smaller air volumes. This operating state is best addressed by changing the number of revolutions of the fan group, which is possible when powered by a steam turbine or DC motor. However, if the drive is carried out by a three-phase motor, the number of revolutions cannot be changed.
In this case, the groups that normally work in parallel are connected in series. However, not all desired operating states can be achieved in this way; In addition, one group does not work economically because the cross-sections are too large.
With your present multi-group blower, the groups of which work temporarily in parallel and occasionally one behind the other, the above disadvantages are eliminated by the fact that the individual groups for parallel operation are not dimensioned for the same flow rate. In Fig. 1 pressure volume curve H and efficiency 9 of a blast furnace fan of a known type are plotted. Let the normal flow rate be Q, the normal pressure head D.
If the fan works without resistance, it delivers Qmax c-,) 2 Q. The fan consists of two equally sized groups. Let the pressure volume curve of a group be Hl. In normal operation it is then

the delivery rate of a group respectively.

the maximal.
If the groups are now switched one after the other, the first group works as in normal operation (curve H1). The second group conveys the medium to the higher pressure (curve R '). Since the specific volume at the entry into the second group is significantly smaller than at the entry into the first, the second group could deliver more accordingly (see curve H2), which the first group does not allow. The delivery rate cannot be increased beyond the normal

If the hatched area of Fig. 2 were not yet sufficient to cover the desired operating conditions, then Q, can still be rummaged around. The fan would then work with somewhat poorer efficiency in parallel operation.
One group could also be built for slightly higher pressure than the other to meet the operating points.
