Speed regulating device for individual electric motors operating industrial machines. The present invention relates to a speed regulating device for individual electric motors operating parts of industrial machines with rotating cylinders, such as papermaking machines, mills, etc.
In these machines it is necessary or at least desirable that it be possible to obtain that the speeds of the individual motors, once set, will continue to be so in a fixed ratio with respect to one another, while allowing, at the same time time, that it is possible to obtain a speed adjustment, of large amplitude, of all the motors, as well as a small variation in the relative speed of the motor with respect to that of the others. This is achieved with the device according to the present invention, a device in which the motors are connected together in parallel by means of auxiliary alternating current circuits, an adjustable frequency transformer being inserted between at least one of the motors and these auxiliary circuits. .
These auxiliary alternating currents exert an influence similar to what exists in synchronous alternators operating in parallel, and with the adjustable frequency transformer, the effect of circulating the alternating currents which keeps the armatures in the desired speed ratio is maintained while allowing, thanks to the regulation of the frequency between the auxiliary connections and the armatures, that the independent speed regulation of the individual motors is possible.
It will be seen that in general it is not necessary to provide a frequency transformer for each armature, since, for example, one or more can be connected directly to the auxiliary connections by means of the turns of the winding and the rings. , and this machine or these machines will then be able to operate according to truly synchronous with the frequency of the current in the connections while the rest of the motors can have their speed adjusted according to this frequency.
In practice, it will be desirable to arrange for the current flowing between the machines to be polyphase, although single phase can be employed. The type of frequency transformer whose use is proposed, preferably consists of a switch and a rotary brush holder, the relative speed of rotation of which can be obtained by the very rotation of the motor to which the device is adapted, but can be adjusted, within the limits required.
The device is applicable to both direct current and alternating current motors, but, as the former are more frequently used, the following description mainly applies to direct current motors having the usual armature and collector. . The frequency transformer can then be obtained, either by placing additional brushes on the existing drive neck, or preferably by placing a second collector at the other end of the armature and on which the current brush holder alternative can operate.
Preferably, this brush holder is equipped to be dragged by means of a suitable mechanical speed change, by the motor shaft, the gear train then being such that the speed of the brushes can be either greater, or less than the speed of the manifold, with the necessary degree of adjustment.
One embodiment of the object .de -l'in vention is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, according to FIGS. 1 and 2: the first shows two dc motors and their connections, each driving an element of a paper machine, having their armatures electrically connected together by means of three-phase ac circuits, and each being provided with '' a frequency transformer,
in order to obtain independent speed regulation @ for each element of the machine. Fig. 2 shows in perspective view a mode of coupling a frequency transformer with a motor.
Referring to fig. 1, the element 1 of the paper machine is coupled directly to the armature 2 of a DC motor having a shunt excitation winding 3. The DC brushes 4 of the motor are connected passing through a starting rheostat 5 to. the variable voltage direct current supply line 6 and moreover the group of brushes 7 and arranged around the collector in a suitable manner - to collect the three-phase currents of said armature and deliver them, by means of cone rings tact and another group of fixed brushes bearing on the rings (not shown in, fig. 1), the conductors 23 and the three-pole switch 9, on the three-phase line 8.
While the DC brushes 4 are fixed, the three-phase brushes 7 are arranged to rotate normally at the same speed as the armature, but by means of a change of speed they can be brought to turn slower or faster than the armature, as required.
It is clear that the set of groups of continuous brushes and. alternators can be arranged to operate on a collector, but two collectors are preferable, mounted one at each end of the armature, and the one closest to the driven paper element can suitably work in cooperation with the rotating group of three-phase brushes 7, as shown, for greater clarity, by examining FIG. 2, which shows in perspective the frame 16 of the direct current motor with the armature 2 coming out. one end and directly coupled to the shaft 10 which drives the papermaking element.
The armature, in addition to the collector for the direct current brushes 4 placed on the side of the casing not visible in FIG. 2, is provided -du collector 11 to. the other end, as shown, on which the group of three brushes 7 (one of them is not visible being hidden by the shaft) is kept in contact. These brushes are mounted in insulating supports at the outer ends of radial arms 12, which 'are fixed at their inner ends to. a hub 13. The hub and brushes can. rotate freely on the shaft 10, as do three insulated rings 14 and a straight toothed wheel 15 which are rigidly fixed to the hub.
The brushes 7 are electrically connected to the rings 14 which are provided with another group of fixed brushes connected to the conductors 23 in a manner which allows three-phase current to be collected by the fixed brushes.
The toothed wheel 15, and with it the rings 14 and brushes 7, are driven by the shaft 10 by means of a speed change constituted by a second toothed wheel 17 keyed to the shaft 10 and by two conical pulleys 18 and 19 secured by a belt 20, the cone 18 being driven by a pinion 21 in engagement with the toothed wheel 17, and the cone 19 by dragging the toothed wheel 15 as well as the brushes and the rings through the pinion 22.
The three conductors 23 are connected in the known manner to a wattmeter arranged in a box 24, which, depending on whether the electrical power is supplied to or comes from the armature 2, will actuate a contactor inside the box. box 24 which will establish a connection, either between the wires 25 and 26, or between the -fils 27 and 26, thus connecting: to lines 30 and 33 providing the continuous current, circuits consisting of either the winding field 28 in series with the armature @ 31 of a servo motor, or by the field winding 29 in series with said armature 31.
The field windings 28 and 29 are connected in opposition and the servomotor will thus rotate in two opposite directions depending on whether one or the other is in circuit, and will actuate, by means of a worm gear 35 , the rheostat 32 which will increase or decrease the resistance, so that the current in the inductor bearing 3 of the drive motor, which winding is in series with the resistance, of the rheostat 32 on the current lines continuous 30 and 34, will be maintained at a value which corresponds to the zero power flow in the three-phase circuit 23.
When the zero power flow condition has been established, the contactor in the case 24 will take an intermediate position such that the current in the armature 31 will be interrupted. The position of the switch can be indicated outside the body 24 by an index 37.
In fig. 1, a second element 38 of the papermaker is indicated, operated by a second group of apparatuses similar to the group already described to operate element 1, and, -. Other elements can be operated in a manner similar, lines 6, 8, 30, 33 and 34 being used in common by each group of devices.
Independent sources of direct current are employed to power lines 6 and also lines 30 and 33, and a resistance may be introduced between lines 30 and 34 for the purpose of manually adjusting or otherwise adjusting the currents in the line. all 3 inductor windings simultaneously, thus providing a means of raising or lowering the speed of all the elements of the paper machine simultaneously as may be desired, although simultaneous adjustment of the speed -within the broad limits that may be required would, for the most part,
supported by the variation of the voltage @ of the direct current of the lines 6 which can, for example, be supplied by the generator of a motor-generator set equipped with Leonardo regulation.
The operation is as follows: As long as the belt 20 of the speed change remains in a particular intermediate position on the cone pulleys 18 and 19, the brushes 7 will rotate at the same speed as the armature 2, and the periodicity of the three-phase currents the rings 14 will depend only on the speed of the armature. If all the groups walk under these conditions, they will all walk at. the same speed, and if they are properly adjusted, there will be no three-phase power exchange between them.
If now it is desired that one of the groups drives its element at a speed slightly different from that of the other elements, the belt 20 of this group will be moved by a suitable device such that it assumes a position of one. side or the other of said intermediate position on the cone pulleys.
This will obviously cause the brushes 7 of this group to rotate faster or slower than its armature 2, and therefore said armature will tend to apply a current to its rings 14; of a higher or lower frequency. From this, as is known, there will be circulation of synchronizing currents between the groups which will force the armature 2 to modify its speed accordingly.
After each speed adjustment, there will be a tendency for the production of an abnormal circulation of power between the groups, both in the three-phase lines and the direct current lines, which, as already explained, will be. automatically corrected, from its birth, by the action of the wattmeter of the body 24, which, for this purpose, causes an adequate adjustment of the current in the inductor winding 3.
Instead of connecting the sections of induction 2 to the blades of the manifold 11, mounted on the armature shaft, these sections can be connected to a certain number of rings mounted on the armature shaft on which rub brushes connected to other brushes rub both on other rings of a separate device driven by means of a speed change by the armature shaft and comprising in addition rings and their brushes a rotary collector whose blades are connected to the rings, and polyphase brushes, which, if they are three-phase, can be connected to the conductors 23 of fig. 1.
Such .dispositif comprises the. possibility that all groups of brushes can be fixed.
In addition, separate windings may be employed for servoing the motion and speed of the drive motors, and, for example, in the case of the armature motor 2, the windings connected to the brushes d may be the same. ordinary windings responding to the conditions of the direct current supplied on lines 6, and the windings connected to the brushes 7 may have fewer turns than the other windings, which will simplify the connections but will nevertheless give an effective means of speeds of different groups.
To facilitate the switching of the alternating current, resistive conductors can be inserted between the armature and the blades of the collector 11, and also other already known means, such as half-turn armature windings, intended to facilitate the variable frequency AC switching, can be adopted.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 it has. It has been mentioned that all groups will rotate at the same speed when brushes 7 are rotating at the same speed as armature 2, but it is clear that groups will also rotate at equal speeds when brushes 7 are rotating faster or slower than the armature provided that the percentage of the speed difference of these elements is set to be the same for each group.
The normal speed of each group can be chosen to match the conditions, when the brushes 7 are rotating, either faster or slower, or at the same speed as armature 2, and any speed adjustment can accordingly be done on either side of normal speed. as may be required.
