Process for the elimination of salts from water by electroosmotic means. Many industries are based on the use of low-salt bezw for the manufacture of their products. dependent on salt-free water, in all cases in which a reaction of the salts contained in any natural water with other chemical bodies to the detriment of the end product it follows.
Reference should be made to dyeing, laundry, artificial mineral water production, brewing, soap making, linseing, leather tannery, etc., in particular to all those cases in which particularly soft or distilled water must be used.
If one wants to effect a certain amount of desalination of the water in a purely chemical way, in many cases one has to accept the disadvantage that the chemical conversion removes one salt but creates a new one.
The invention relates to a method for the complete or partial elimination of salts from water by electroosmotic means without a new salt being produced in place of the removed one. This is achieved in that the water to be cleaned between diaphragms in such a layer, which is measured in the direction of migration of the chemical compounds to be removed, is thin, is exposed to the effect of the electrical direct current.
This process allows continuous work; this results in a lower power consumption than usual; no chemical additives are necessary either. Electroosmotic desalination can be used after chemical pretreatment . or without it; For example, a particularly alkaline earth carbonate-containing water will be freed as far as possible from the carbonates by any known method before the electroosmotic treatment.
With regard to the diaphragms, fabrics made of vegetable materials, for example cutter cloth, are to be recommended as cathodic diaphragm material, while chrome leather, for example, is considered as anodic diaphragm material. An electrode made of carbon or magnetite has proven to be very advantageous as the anode material.
FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawing show a device suitable for practicing the new method in a schematic representation, FIG. 1 being an elevation and FIG. 2 being a floor plan is the same. The water to be salted is located in the Sanimel vessel 8 and flows through its own gradient into the center of the osmosis apparatus at E .
This consists of the central space 31 which is separated from the two side spaces An and Ka by an anodic and a cathodic, suitably spamites diaphragm. The anode is located in the side space An , the cathode in the side space En. The frames closing off the individual rooms are composed like a filter press. The water to be desalinated exits the central area through an overflow at Z and is pumped back into the collecting vessel S .
So that the anodic and catalytic migrated electrolytes do not concentrate too much during the electrical treatment of the water to be desalinated, the side rooms An and Kii are continuously rinsed with ordinary tap water.
The ni z3 access of the rinsing water, which absorbs and removes the electrolytic decomposition products of the central area water that forms on the electrodes, takes place at D and the exit at F . The degree of desalination can be regulated by the length of time and the applied voltage.
FIG. 3 shows the apparatus arrangement schematically for continuous operation. -In your vessel, S the water to be desalinated flows one after the other from the middle room to the middle room of the osmosis devices arranged one behind the other and leaves the last middle room at the desired degree of desalination. With this arrangement, the degree of electrolyte removal can be regulated by the number of elements connected in series,
by the flow rate and the voltage used between the electrodes. Exemplary embodiment The effect of the new method is readily apparent from the following water analyzes -
