Abstract

This invention relates to a battery charger which provides a charging current to a battery through a series connected controlled rectifier at an initially high rate. During this initial charging period, the voltage of the battery increases and goes through a maximum corresponding to a voltage well above the end of charge voltage level of the battery. Control circuitry automatically tapers then later terminates charge when the battery has attained its desired capacity. Generation of heat in the controlled rectifier is used beneficially to reduce the time required to bring the cell to a given capacity.
