Abstract
This invention relates to an improvement in an apparatus for dispensing a ribbon, i.e., tape, web or string, generally referred to herein as "ribbon", between layers of paper-Iike web material at the laminating end of a web making machine or the web end of a corrugating machine. One aspect of the present invention is the positioning of novel ribbon dispensing guide aiins to locate each guide arm with precision transversely with respect to the web laminating machine path, and doing so remotely, automatically by measuring the position of each ribbon between the layers of paper by using infrared.
Description
2. Description of the Prior Art The commercially available guide aims do not posses and feed-back to automatically adjust the position of the ribbons in or on the paper web. An employee at the exit of the web laminating machine has to physically measure the position of the ribbon in or on the paper web and adjust the position of the ribbon in the dispensing apparatus as needed. The difficulty to make this process automatic is that most of the time the ribbons are inserted inside the layers of the paper web and those cannot be measured inline in the laminating paper web machine.
Over the years different apparatus have been made commercially available to insert the ribbons into the web laminating paper machine. Efforts had been made to increase the precision of the placement of the ribbons inside or on top of the paper web layers. For example, U.S. Pat. No.
5.759.339 describe a applicator that uses a belt system to position each guide arm. But there is not any feed back system to automatically position the guide aims which apply the ribbons to the paper web.
An important amelioration has been reach with Canadian Patent #2,342,495 where a camara system is used to position the guide aim relative to the edge of the paper web laminating machine at the start of the lamination where the ribbons are inserted. But this system does not automatically adjust the position of the ribbons if they are out of position at the exit of the web laminating machine.
An operator must physically measure the position and input the position change of the guide aims into the ribbon dispensing apparatus.
The present invention provides an apparatus and method for precisely placing one or more continuous ribbons on the web, the ribbons extending parallel in the machine direction. A
plurality of ribbons would be placed in transversely spaced relationship. Changes in the position of anyone or more of the ribbon dispensing guide aims is accomplished remotely of the location of the guide aims on a guide beam. The apparatus also uses an infrared system that can detect the position of the ribbon inside or on top of the web at the exist of the web laminating machine and the position of each ribbon can then be feed back to the ribbon dispensing apparatus and the required position adjustment can than be done automatically and continuously.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention is directed to an apparatus for applying a ribbon to a web during the processing of the web, i.e., for the manufacture of a substrate for container construction.
The apparatus of the present invention is used to dispense a ribbon onto a web in a predetermined position and to be able to adjust the position of the ribbon with relationship to the edges of each sheet made from slitting the web remotely, automatically and continuously. The apparatus includes a frame supporting a means used to move each guide arm along the frame, guide aim that are dispensing ribbons into a web, locking means to position the guide aim in a desired fixed position along the guide rail, means for deteimining the position of the guide arm transversely of the web direction of movement or the machine direction of the web, means for adjusting the position of each guide aim following the lateral movement of the web, a means to measure the actual position of the ribbon on or in the web at the end or close to the end of the laminating machine and a means to send back the measurement to the apparatus to adjust the position of the guide arm if needed. The frame includes a guide rail. The guide arm is supported on the guide rail for movement therealong. The guide aim includes guide pulleys for receiving a ribbon from a remote supply which is fed to the guide aim transversely of the web and for locating the ribbon on the web for attachment and lamination thereto.
In one embodiment the frame supports a transducer to afford a reading as to the position of the guide arm with respect to the centreline or an edge of the web. The transducer is connected to a control and display box providing a numeric digital readout giving the location along the guide beam of the guide arm or arms. The guide alms are provided with means cooperating with the transducer to afford a signal in response to a current pulse sent from the display box along the transducer.
The signal from each arm is discerned by the electronics in the display box to calculate the distance any particular guide aim is from the predeteimined "0" and the numeric value is displayed on the screen of the display box. Furtheimore, an electronic system is used to monitor the edge of the web, which position is feed-back to the control unit which in turn sends the signal to automatically adjust the guide alms according to the lateral movement of Date Recue/Date Received 2020-12-03 the web, maintaining the required position of each ribbons in or on the web.
Furthermore an infrared camara is used to measure the position of the ribbon at or near the end of the web making machine and that position is feed back to the electronic system that controls the position of the guide arm and adjust them as needed.
These and other novel features of the invention will be more fully described hereinbelow.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The present invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a sectional view diagrammatically showing the apparatus frame for mounting on the frame of a corrugating machine, one of the ribbon guide aims, the ribbon, the papers that will foul' the laminated web and the infrared camera;
FIG. 2 is a perspective 1 view of the apparatus at the position of a guide aim in a corrugating machine and showing the frame, three guide alms with three ribbons, the moving laminating web and the infrared camera;
FIG. 3 is a sectional view of apparatus similar to FIG. 1 where the infrared camara is positioned after the moving laminating web has been cut into sheets.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
The present invention provides an improved apparatus for the dispensing of a ribbon onto a moving web at a desired path on the web, with the apparatus including at least one ribbon dispensing guide arm independently adjustable transversely of the direction of movement of the web.
As illustrated in the drawing the apparatus, the apparatus E is located at the entry of the laminating machine where the papers B and C are joined. The apparatus E supports the Guide Arm J that feed the ribbon D inside the laminating machine between paper B and C. The laminated web 1 then encounters the Infrared Camera A that can detect the presence and position of the Ribbon D
inside the laminated web 1 by the temperature differences over or under laminated web 1. The position of the ribbon D is then communicated to the electronic control that moves Guide Arm J across the moving laminated web 1 so the Guide Aim J can be moved is necessary so that ribbon D is positioned at the right place across moving laminated web I.
In another embodiment, the laminated web 1 has been cut into sheets H and the Infrared Camera A is positioned over or under the sheets, then recording the position of the ribbon D after the laminating web 1 has been cut into sheets.
Having described the invention with reference to accompanying illustrations of the apparatus of the present invention, it is contemplated that engineering changes can be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
