Description

DGBOX FOR TRANSPORTING CRUDE BITUMEN
ABSTRACT
THE INVENTION provides a DGBOX for transporting crude bitumen, comprising container frame, tank and steam heating system. The innovative DGBOX is suitable for all crude bitumen grades and is simple to operate, safe to transport and friendly to environment.
FIELD OF TECHNOLOGY
The present invention relates to crude bitumen transportation.
BACKGROUND
The differential between Western Canadian Select (WCS) oil price and North America WTI oil price benchmark vibrates sometimes with the turnaround of US refineries and/or the seasonal rush hours of transportation capacity of Canadian pipeline or railcar. While the differential between WCS and WTI was $45.93 in Nov 2018. At that time, WTI oil price was $56.96, however, the Alberta oil WCS price was $11.03 only.
The reason for the gap between WCS and WTI is the limited Canadian transportation capacity.
With increasing bitumen production in Canada, limited pipeline capacity becomes a bottleneck for Canadian oil producers in the last twenty years, and the situation is getting worse with the increase of oil sands production in the last ten years.
To ease the unfair oil price differential between WCS and WTI, the official reduction of 8.7% of Alberta oil production will drop an average of 325,000 barrels a day until curtailment ends at the end of 2019, when Enbridge's new Line 3 pipeline starts operating.

In addition to the pipeline and railcar transportation capacity, the pipeline transportation requires a large amount of diluent to thin the high viscous crude bitumen, further decreases the price of Alberta crude bitumen. Furthermore, the oil leaking from pipeline transportation is constantly reported. In 2009, a refined product pipeline rupture near Farran's Point, Ontario; In 2010, a refined product pipeline rupture at Bronte Creek in Oakville, Ontario; In 2011, a pipeline break northeast of Peace River, Alberta, leaked 28,000 barrels of crude oil, some wildlife was killed because of the spill; In 2012, almost half a million liters of sour crude oil leaked into a creek that flows into the Red Deer River; In 2013, 5,000 liters of oil escaped from a pipeline near Little Buffalo, Alberta;
In 2014, 60,000 liters of crude oil spilled into muskeg from a failed pipeline, in Red Earth Creek in northern Alberta; In 2015, a pipeline at a Long Lake oil sands facility in northern Alberta leaked about 31,500 barrels of oil emulsion; In 2016, a failed Husky Energy pipeline spilled 225,000 liters of oil into the North Saskatchewan River; In 2017, 200,000 liters of oil condensate in Strathcona County, Alberta were released from line 2A; In 2018, about 4,800 liters of crude were released from a Trans Mountain pipeline at the company's Darfield station north of Kamloops, British Columbia, etc.
In terms of railcar transportation, there is no diluent required for crude bitumen to ship in the railcar.
However, the railcar transportation also has a notorious oil spilling, resulting in fire. In 2013, 63 tank cars carrying petroleum crude oil and 2 box cars derailed. About 6 million liters of petroleum crude oil spilled. There were fires and explosions, which destroyed 40 buildings, 53 vehicles, and the railway tracks at the west end of Megantic Yard. Forty-seven people were fatally injured. There was environmental contamination of the downtown area and of the adjacent river and lake.
The oil leaking from available transportation options challenges the wildlife survival, contaminates soil and water. In more serious cases, the crude spills can cause fire.
Therefore, novel device related to crude bitumen transportation is imperative.
Except for the pipeline and the railcar options, containers with specific functions can also be used for the crude bitumen transportation. A few ideas have been proposed including bitumen container, Bitutainer and BITUBOX.
CA 303'7790 2019-03-25 In terms of bitumen container, it is a container designed for bitumen, comprising a body member defining a base zone, side wall zones, end wall zones and a roof zone, characterized in means for transmitting heat from a heating medium to the base zone and to at least part of the side wall zones of the bitumen container. The tank structure is mounted on supports within an ISO container frame.
There are two opposed burner holders and two opposed chimney outlets. The gaseous heating medium transfers heat through conduction. However, the gaseous heating medium has high carbon footprint. Moreover, there is no container frame to protect the interior tank in case of collision.
Also, the tank surface is fully exposure to the weather without container frame, the insulation of the tank is in the form of an outer packing of mineral wool, glass fiber mat.
The thermal efficiency is limited.
In terms of Bitutainer, it is a converted standard 20ft ISO tank container.
The Bitutainer includes high performance immersed heating system, pressure tested and fully welded interior tank, 100 mm high volume cavity insulations, robust corrugated protective outer walls, secure lockable manway, chimney exhaust flues secured with chains for security, hinged valve box. The chimney can be raised and secured in the heating position, resulting in high performance heating system (8-C/hour) via heating tubes. The mechanical thermometer supplied at low level for monitoring heating process. However, the gaseous heating medium has high carbon footprint. And the installation of the diesel heating facility is complex. Furthermore, the Bitutainer cannot have bitumen partial filled inside the tank because there is no shaking resistance in the interior tank during transportation.
In terms of BITUBOX, it is a converted 20ft standard ISO tank container. The capacity can be up to 30,000 L. The manhole on the top is used for loading bitumen and the three-inch bottom ball valve outlet is used for discharging. There is flame tube heating system and smart insulation system.
The insulation material is fireproof rock wool. A normal door is installed to protect the flame tube and bottom outlet. However, the large BITUBOX capacity is unnecessary because the 20 ft standard container has its regulation on weight for oversea travelling. The manhole used for loading is fast while it is easy to pollute the top surface of the BITUBOX.
The crude bitumen cleaning is challenging and costly. Moreover, the diesel heating system is complex in operation CA 303'7790 2019-03-25 and high carbon footprint. Besides, the Bitutainer cannot have bitumen partial filled in the interior tank where it is shortage of shaking resistance.
Accordingly, there is a market for a novel crude bitumen container which takes advantage of available options, contributes to alleviate at least some of the deficiencies addressed above.
SUMMARY
Above present the pros and cons of different inventions to overcome the challenge of crude bitumen transportation. As embodied and broadly described herein, the invention proposed here is a DGBOX for transporting crude bitumen, comprising container frame, tank and steam heating system. The DGBOX is simple to operate, safe to transport and friendly to environment.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION
The DGBOX is a global solution for crude bitumen transportation through highway, railway, sea.
It meets the standards including UIC, TIR, CSC, TC, AAR-600, ASME VIII DIV
1/EN14025, ISO 1496-3.
The DGBOX has volume of 25.6 m3 and weight around 4.5 tons. The maximum gross weight allowance is 30.48 tons. The weight has to meet the regulations of highway, railway and oversea shipping. The DGBOX is designed on the basis of 20 ft standard container. The dimension of the DGBOX is 6058 mm x 2438 mm x 2591 mm. The DGBOX works at atmosphere pressure and its allowance temperature is in the range of -40 C to 150 C.
The DGBOX outer container including angle cleat 1, side beam 2, blanking plate 3, lower subplate 4, upper subplate 5, bottom beam 6, bottom stiffening plate 7, corner column 8, side wall 9, top beam 11, roof 12. There is an interior tank 13 inside the container. The rounded rectangle tank 13 has a dimension of 5592 mm x 2200 mm x 2184 mm. From the innermost and moving outward, CA 303'7790 2019-03-25 tanks, insulations and outer containers are available to secure the bulk liquid. There is no spill during the transportation. For the side walls, one side is designed with a ladder to access top of the DGBOX, and the other side is equipped with side wall subassembly 10.
Associated with the subassembly 10, steam inlet and outlet flange 19 is configured as shown in Fig. 1. As described in previous inventions, diesel heating system with chimney is replaced.
Instead, the DGBOX is designed with steam heating system. The water has a larger specific heat capacity than any other gaseous heating medium. The steam travels through the inlet and water is released from the outlet 19. In this process, the latent heat carried by steam at 150 C is released along the tubes 14. There is no chimney in the DGBOX, the carbon footprint in the heat transfer process is eliminated compared to the diesel heating system. The whole process is more environmentally friendly. More importantly, distribution of the tubes 14 is given in views A-A, B-B, C, and D-D of in the Fig. 1. In this way, the moving resistance of bulk liquid in the interior tank 13 is enlarged during transportation. More shaking resistance is provided by the crosslinked tubes 14 in case partial crude bitumen is filled in the interior tank 13. The transportation is safer and more reliable. In addition, the crude bitumen inlet and outlet flange 20 is designed for bottom loading and discharging. The inlet and outlet ball valve 21 controls the flow of crude bitumen.
Three-inch hose can be connected to the DGBOX, the process is clean and easy to handle.
Compared to previous inventions as above, the loading for BITUBOX is from the top manhole, the top loading bitumen will pollute the outer top surface, it is costly and tough in cleaning after loading bitumen. Associated with the subassembly 10, thermometer 22 is designed to monitor and control the heat transfer. The float-operated liquid level gauge 23 is used to monitor and control the fluid level in the interior tank 13.
It is a further feather of the invention that the flame-retardant polyurethane foam 24 is used for thermal insulation. The flame-retardant polyurethane foam 24 has lowest heat conductivity than any other thermal insultation materials, including rock wool or mineral wool, glass fiber in previous inventions. All in all, the DGBOX is simple to operate by bottom loading and discharging, has a better thermal efficiency with flame-retardant, lowest heat conductivity materials for insulations and a larger specific heat capacity heating medium, is safer and more relaible with crossl inked tubes distributed in the tank to mitigate the shaking cause by the partial filling of crude CA 303'7790 2019-03-25 bitumen, is more costly effective and environmentally friendly by using the steam heating system instead of the diesel heating system.
Most importantly, the DGBOX is designed with tank stiffener 15 for the interior tank protection.
Moreover, a manhole 17 is designed for maintenance. The heating process, loading and discharging process can change the pressure in the interior tank 13. There is a safety valve 16 associated with the DGBOX, the safety valve 16 is closed most of time. It will be open to release gas when the pressure in the interior tank 13 is large enough. The value of the threshold pressure when the safety valve 16 to open has to be tested before use. Also, a breather valve 18 is associated with the DGBOX. When the pressure in tank is 355 Pa higher than the operating pressure, the breather valve 18 will be open to release gas out; when the pressure in tank is 255 Pa lower than the operating pressure, the breather valve 18 will be open to suck gas in. In the discharging process, the heating temperature is designed to be 50 C, and the temperature varies with different bulk liquids filled. Because the heating system uses steam at 150 C, all the paintings are high temperature resistant.
The DGBOX can offer solutions to global transport of all grade crude bitumen, heavy crude, bunker fuel, industrial and petroleum products, syrup, edible oil, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural commodities, etc.
