A method for recycling lithium-ion batteries comprises discharging the batteries, chopping the batteries into pieces, mixing the pieces in a polar solvent, screening the mixture to separate parts of the batteries, and isolating a suspension of the solvent containing fines of the electrode materials. In one aspect, the polar solvent is a buffer having a pH
from about 6 to about 8.
