Description
Lift With Telescopic Platform and Guard Rails Inventor: Amir Sharif, 58 Festoon Place, Brampton, Ontario, L6T 4R4, Canada.
Invention: Lift with extensible, telescopic platform and guard rails, capable of lifting a wheelchair and its occupant, Or other cart, and horizontally bridging over several steps, loading dock, or other elevated platform Novelty: The lift with telescopic platform offers a safe, convenient, accessibility solution for transferring a cart or a wheelchair and its occupant over a reduced number of steps, loading dock or other elevated platform, while featuring a reduced footprint when not in use.
Problems with current designs: Existing individual wheelchair lifts require dedicated access to porch, handrail reinforcement, mounting of guide rails, and take significant space, creating access obstruction for other inhabitants of the house.
Solution: This invention does not require separate access to elevated platforms, does not block existing stairs, and can be used even on stairs without handrails, as found in many garages.
Detailed Description: The novel part of the lift [1] consists of lifting platform equipped with two additional platforms, which can be extended in order to form an accessible bridge over a flight of stairs, when the lift is raised (Fig.1.).
The two extending platforms form a telescopic assembly with the main lift platform (Fig.4.) and they fit completely inside the main platform when retracted (Fig.2.).
The side safety guards of the lift are of telescopic, to allow extension when the telescopic platforms extend The outer telescopic platform [2] is guided inside the main platform [3] by 2 pairs of low friction sliders [4] or rollers and it is actuated by a long stroke hydraulic cylinder [5]. Inner telescopic platform [6] is guided inside the outer telescopic platform [2] by 2 pairs of low friction sliders [4]
or rollers and it is actuated by a long stroke hydraulic cylinder [7].
Alternatively, the actuation of the telescopic platforms can be achieved by means of other drive solutions, such as, but not limited to rack and pinion, hydraulically or electrically activated, electric screw drives, cable cylinders.
As shown in Fig.2, the main guard rails [8] are bolted to the main platform [3]. End guard rails [9]
are bolted to the inner telescoping platform [6], and are being pulled forward when the inner platform is extended. End guard rails [9] are telescoping inside the intermediate guard rails [10], which, in turn, are telescoping inside the main guard rails [8]. The telescoping guard rail arrangement ensures that adequate side guarding is provided to the wheel chair and occupant at all times. To increase safety, the main platform was equipped with an exit gate [11], which will open only after the extension of the telescopic platforms has been concluded. The ramp [12] is used to facilitate wheelchair access to the main platform, and can swing up to act as a rear gate during lift raising. The ramp is actuated by means of one or more hydraulic, pneumatic or electric drives. In the present embodiment, the ramp is actuated by 2 hydraulic cylinders.
Raising of the platform is achieved through a scissor mechanism [13], or other alternative raising mechanism.
The scissor mechanism, swinging access ramp and exit gate are common components, and are not the object of this invention.
