Abstract

An extension tool (100) comprises a shank body (10), a sleeve set (20), and a positioning device (30). The sleeve set (20) is rotatably mounted around the shank body (10) and includes a a housing (21), a retainer (22), and an O-ring (23). The housing (21) has a bore (213) extending therethrough and inserted by the shank body (10). The retainer (22) is mounted to the shank body. The O-ring (23) is disposed between a distal end (212) of the housing (21) and the retainer (22). The O-ring (23) is flexible so that the housing (21) is biased by the O-ring (23) to press a connecting element (12) of the shank body (10).

Description

1 Extension tool 2 Background of the Invention 3 1. Field of the Invention 4 The present invention relates generally to an extension tool and, more particularly, to an extension tool which is able to reduce the noise generated 6 by collision of the housing and the connecting element.

7 2. Description of the Related Art 8 U.S. Pat. No. 4,876,929 shows a flexible extension shaft which 9 includes a plurality of concentric coil springs and a flexible sleeve mounted on the concentric coil springs. The flexible sleeve is rotatable with respect to 11 the concentric coil springs. The flexible extension shaft has a first end 12 adapted to cooperate with a chuck of a screwdriver and a second end adapted 13 to hold the tool for rotary driven motion. The screwdriver is operable to drive 14 the tool by reason of the second end of the flexible shaft holding the tool for rotary driven motion thereof. The flexible extension shaft further includes a 16 shaft biasing coil spring disposed between the concentric coil springs and a 17 cylindrical fitting.

18 It is appreciated that the shaft biasing coil spring is mounted by the 19 cylindrical fitting. As previously mentioned, the cylindrical fitting is quite large in relation to the shaft biasing coil spring. For this reason, it has been 21 difficult to assemble and to replace the shaft biasing coil spring.
Additionally, 22 the cylindrical fitting may interfere with a object to be processed.

23 The present invention is, therefore, intended to obviate or at least 24 alleviate the problems encountered in the prior art.

2 Summary of the Invention 3 According to the present invention, the main purpose is to provide an 4 extension tool comprises a shank body, a sleeve set, and a positioning device.
The sleeve set is rotatably mounted around the shank body and includes a a 6 housing, a retainer, and an O-ring. The housing has a bore extending 7 therethrough and inserted by the shank body. The retainer is mounted to the 8 shank body. The O-ring is disposed between a distal end of the housing and 9 the retainer. The O-ring is flexible so that the housing is biased by the O-ring to press a connecting element of the shank body.

11 An advantage of the extension tool according to the present invention 12 is that the O-ring is sandwiched between the second face of the slot and the 13 retainer, hence, the housing is biased by the O-ring to press the connecting 14 element so that the housing would not longitudinally move with respect to the shank body. It is appreciated that noise generated by collision of the housing 16 and the connecting element is prevented.

17 Another advantage of the extension tool according to the present 18 invention is that the socket member has a magnetic unit provided thereon for 19 temporarily attracting the tool head to avoid unexpected detachment of the tool head.

22 Brief Description of the Drawings 23 The present invention will be described through detailed illustration 24 of the preferred embodiments referring to the drawings.

13 Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment 14 The present invention will be described through detailed illustration of one embodiment referring to the drawings.

16 Referring to Figs. 1 through 7, there is shown an extension tool 100 17 according to the present invention, the extension tool 100 which is adapted to 18 be attached to a power tool and comprises a shank body 10 and a sleeve set 19 rotatably mounted around the shank body 10.

The shank body 10 includes a rod 11 and a connecting element 12.
21 The rod 10 has two opposing ends including a first end 111 and a second end 22 112. The connecting element 12 is installed to the first end 111 of the rod 11.
23 The second end 112 of the rod 11 is adapted to be attached to a chuck of the 24 power tool (not shown). The connecting element 12 may be tightly mounted 1 to the first end 111 of the rod 11. The connecting element 12 and the first end 2 111 of the rod 11 may be integrally formed as a one piece. The connecting 3 element 12 has a receptacle 121 provided on one end thereof distal from the 4 rod 11 in which the receptacle 121 is adapted for connecting to a tool head (not shown).

6 The sleeve set 20 includes a housing 21, a retainer 22, and an O-ring 7 23. The housing 21 has two opposing ends including a proximal end 211 8 abutted to the connecting element 12 of the shank body 10, and a distal end 9 212. The housing 21 has a bore 213 extending therethrough and inserted by the rod 11 of the shank body 10. Preferably, the rod 11 has a groove 113 11 formed on an outer periphery thereof adjacent to the second end 112. The 12 retainer 22 is mounted to the groove 113 of the rod 11 and the O-ring 23 is 13 disposed between the distal end 212 of the housing 21 and the retainer 22 of 14 the sleeve set 20. Additionally, the O-ring 23 is flexible so that the housing 21 is biased by the O-ring 23 to press the connecting element 12 of the shank 16 body 10.

17 The extension tool 100 further comprises a positioning device 30 18 installed to the connecting element 12 of the shank body 10. The tool head is 19 selectively engaged in the receptacle 121 of the connecting element 12 by the positioning device 30. The positioning device 30 includes a pressing set 31, a 21 detent 32, and a limiting set 33. The pressing set 31 is slidably received in the 22 receptacle 121 and is adapted to press the tool head. The pressing set 31 23 includes a socket member 311 and a resilient element 312. The connecting 24 element 12 has an aperture 122 and a groove 123 provided on an outer 1 periphery thereof. The aperture 122 is in communication with the receptacle 2 121. The detent 32 is slidably installed to the aperture 122 and is selectively 3 abutted to the tool head to prevent detachment of the tool head. The limiting 4 set 33 includes a control ferrule 331, a stopping unit 332, a retainer 333, and a resilient element 334. The control ferrule 331 is mounted around the 6 connecting element 12 adjacent to the receptacle 121 and is movable relative 7 to connecting element 12 along the longitudinal axis between a coupling 8 position and a releasing position. The control ferrule 331 has a first section 9 3311 and a second section 3312 both formed on an inner periphery thereof in which the first section 3311 is distal from the rod 11 and the second section 11 3312 is adjacent to the rod 11. Additionally, the first section 3311 has an 12 inner diameter smaller than that of the second section 3312. The stopping 13 unit 332 is engaged with the inner periphery of the control ferrule 331.
The 14 retainer 333 is mounted to the groove 123 of the connecting element 12. The resilient element 334 is disposed between the stopping unit 332 and the 16 retainer 333 and the stopping unit 332 is biased by the resilient element 17 such that the control ferrule 331 is biased to move toward the sleeve set 20.
18 While the control ferrule 331 is in the coupling position, the detent 32 19 is abutted by the first section 3311 of the control ferrule 331 to engage with the tool head such that the tool head is prevented from detaching from the 21 receptacle 121 of the connecting element 12 (as shown in Fig. 6). While the 22 control ferrule 331 is in the releasing position, the first section 3311 of the 23 control ferrule 331 is removed from the detent 32 and the detent 32 is 24 moveable in the aperture 122. Hence, the detent 32 is able to be disengaged 1 from the tool head to detach the tool head from the receptacle 121 of the 2 connecting element 12 when the control ferrule 331 is in the releasing 3 position. Once the detent 32 is disengaged from the tool head, the tool head is 4 biased by the resilient element 312 to move away from the receptacle 121 to facilitate replacement of the tool head. Preferably, the socket member 311 6 has a magnetic unit 3111 provided thereon for temporarily attracting the tool 7 head to avoid unexpected detachment of the tool head. The socket member 8 311 further has a flange 3112 provided on an outer periphery thereof for 9 abutting against a shoulder portion 1211 of the receptacle 121 of the connecting element 12 to prevent the socket member 311 from detaching 11 from the receptacle 121 of the connecting element 12.

12 The distal end 212 of the housing 21 has a slot 2121 provided on an 13 outer periphery thereof and includes a first face 2121a and a second face 14 2121b. Preferably, the first face 2121a is parallel to an inner periphery of the bore 213 of the housing 21, and the second face 2121b is perpendicular to the 16 first face 2121 a. The O-ring 23 is mounted to the first face 2121 a of the slot 17 2121. Preferably, the O-ring 23 is sandwiched between the second face 18 2121b of the slot 2121 and the retainer 22, hence, the housing 21 is biased by 19 the O-ring 23 to press the connecting element 12 so that the housing 21 would not longitudinally move with respect to the shank body 10. It is appreciated 21 that noise generated by collision of the housing 21 and the connecting 22 element 12 is prevented. The O-ring 23 has a first diameter Dl delimiting an 23 inner diameter thereof. The first face 2121 a of the slot 2121 has a second 24 diameter D2. The retainer 22 has a third diameter D3 delimiting an outer 1 periphery thereof. The outer periphery of the housing 21 has a fourth 2 diameter D4. Preferably, the first diameter DI is larger than the second 3 diameter D2 and is smaller than the third diameter D3. Preferably, the third 4 diameter D3 is smaller than the fourth diameter D4. Therefore, the O-ring 23 is steadily mounted to the slot 2121 of the housing 21 and users would not be 6 remissly slashed by the retainer 22.

7 Fig. 7 shows the rod 11 of the shank body 10 is attached to the chuck 8 of the power tool, and the connecting element 12 is connected to the tool head.
9 When the power tool is operating, the shank body 10 rotates with the power tool. However, the sleeve 20 does not adapt to rotate with the shank body 10.
11 So that the user could be safe to operate the extension tool with a power tool 12 in a high rotating speed and prevent from getting hurt.

13 The present invention has been described through the illustration of 14 the embodiments. Those skilled in the art can derive variations from the embodiments without departing from the scope of the present invention.
16 Hence, the embodiments shall not limit the scope of the present invention 17 defined in the claims.

Claims (11)

1. An extension tool (100) comprising:

a shank body (10) including a rod (11) and a connecting element (12), wherein the rod (10) has two opposing ends including a first end (111) and a second end (112), with the connecting element (12) installed to the first end (111) of the rod (11), wherein the second end (112) of the rod (11) is adapted to be attached to a chuck of a power tool, wherein the connecting element (12) has a receptacle (121) provided on one end thereof distal from the rod (11) in which the receptacle (121) is adapted for connecting to a tool head;

a sleeve set (20) rotatably mounted around the shank body (10) and including a housing (21), a retainer (22), and an O-ring (23), wherein the housing (21) has two opposing ends including a proximal end (211) abutted to the connecting element (12) of the shank body (10), and a distal end (212), wherein the housing (21) has a bore (213) extending therethrough and inserted by the rod (11) of the shank body (10), wherein the rod (11) has a groove (113) formed on an outer periphery thereof adjacent to the second end (112), with the retainer (22) mounted to the groove (113) of the rod (11), with the O-ring (23) disposed between the distal end (212) of the housing (21) and the retainer (22) of the sleeve set (20), wherein the O-ring (23) is flexible so that the housing (21) is biased by the O-ring (23) to press the connecting element (12) of the shank body (10); and a positioning device (30) installed to the connecting element (12) of the shank body (10), wherein the positioning device (30) includes a pressing set (31), a detent (32), and a limiting set (33), with the pressing set (31) slidably received in the receptacle (121) and is adapted to press the tool head, with the detent (32) is slidably installed to the aperture (122) and is selectively abutted to the tool head to prevent detachment of the tool head, wherein the limiting set (33) includes a control ferrule (331), with the control ferrule 331 mounted around the connecting element (12) adjacent to the receptacle (121) and movable relative to connecting element (12) along the longitudinal axis between a coupling position and a releasing position, wherein the control ferrule (331) has a first section (3311) formed on an inner periphery thereof ;

wherein while the control ferrule (331) is in the coupling position, the detent (32) is abutted by the first section (3311) of the control ferrule (331) to engage with the tool head, wherein while the control ferrule (331) is in the releasing position, the first section (3311) of the control ferrule (331) is removed from the detent (32) and the detent (32) is moveable in the aperture (122) to be disengaged from the tool head.

The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the distal end (212) of the housing (21) has a slot (2121) provided on an outer periphery thereof and includes a first face (2121a) and a second face (2121b), with the first face (2121a) parallel to an inner periphery of the bore (213) of the housing (21), with the second face (2121b) perpendicular to the first face (2121a), with the O-ring 23 mounted to the first face (2121a) of the slot (2121), with the O-ring (23) sandwiched between the second face (2121b) of the slot (2121) and the retainer (22), wherein the housing (21) is biased by the O-ring (23) to press the connecting element (12).
3. The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 2, wherein the O-ring (23) has a first diameter (D1) delimiting an inner diameter thereof, wherein the first face (2121a) of the slot (2121) has a second diameter (D2), with the first diameter (D1) larger than the second diameter (D2).
4. The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 3, wherein the retainer (22) has a third diameter (D3) delimiting an outer periphery thereof, with the first diameter (D1) smaller than the third diameter (D3).
5. The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 4, wherein the outer periphery of the housing (21) has a fourth diameter (D4), with the third diameter (D3) smaller than the fourth diameter (D4).

The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the control ferrule (331) has a second section (3312) formed on the inner periphery thereof, wherein the first section (3311) is distal from the rod (11) and the second section (3312) is adjacent to the rod (11), wherein the first section (3311) has an inner diameter smaller than that of the second section (3312).

The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the pressing set (31) includes a socket member (311) and a resilient element (312), wherein once the detent (32) is disengaged from the tool head, the tool head is biased by the resilient element (312) to move away from the receptacle (121) to facilitate replacement of the tool head.
8. The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 7, wherein the socket member (311) has a magnetic unit (3111) provided thereon for temporarily attracting the tool head to avoid unexpected detachment of the tool head.

The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the limiting set (33) includes a stopping unit (332), a retainer (333), and a resilient element (334), wherein the stopping unit (332) is engaged with the inner periphery of the control ferrule (331), wherein the retainer (333) is mounted to a groove (123) of the connecting element (12), wherein the resilient element (334) is disposed between the stopping unit (332) and the retainer (333), wherein the stopping unit (332) is biased by the resilient element (334).
10. The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the connecting element (12) is tightly mounted to the first end (111) of the rod (11).
11. The extension tool (100) as claimed in claim 1, wherein the connecting element (12) and the first end (111) of the rod (11) are integrally formed as a one piece.
