Abstract
This invention relates to a clothes drying rack which mounts to or is suspended from an overhead structure such as a ceiling and rotates from a vertical storage position to a lower in use position. The drying rack consists of a plurality of drying rods which attach to opposing side members. One of the drying rods runs through the side members and pivotally mounts to support arms. The angle which the drying rack lies when in the lower in use position is determined by stopping pegs attached to the support arms and height adjusting blocks which prevent the drying rack from rotating downwards to a completely vertical position. The upper ends of the support arms attach to mounting brackets which in turn are mounted to or suspended from an overhead structure. When not in use the drying rack is held in a vertical position by removable locking pegs.
Description
TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Rotating Clothes Drying Rack TECHNICAL FIELD
This invention relates generally to clothes drying racks and more particularly to those of the rotating or foldable type adapted to be mounted to or suspended from an overhead structure such as a ceiling. The term "clothes drying rack" is understood not to be limited to an arrangement only for use with clothes but is intended to cover its use with other articles such as towels, sheets or any articles which can be hung or secured to it.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Clothes drying racks have long been known and widely used. Historically such drying racks have largely consisted of umbrella or rotary style racks (Steiner, CA 1331836), collapsible drying racks standing on a horizontal surface (Efrom, CA 1241302), retractable ceiling mounted drying racks utilizing a pulley system (Harris, CA 287614), indoor drying racks installed above bathtubs (Dubuc, CA 1268735), drying racks installed on vertical walls (Barker, CA
553224 and Leighton, CA 2625010) and drying racks installed on vertical walls specifically designed for balconies (Cote, CA 2194800).
The patents mentioned above generally attempt to provide an invention which is aesthetically pleasing, will efficiently dry clothes, and will retract or fold so as to be easily stored and out of the way when not in use. Although these drying racks have achieved considerable popularity and commercial success no patents were found relating to clothes drying racks mounted to or suspended from an overhead structure such as a ceiling which rotate or fold from a storage position to a lower in use position. The object of the rotating clothes drying rack is to provide an aesthetic ceiling mounted apparatus which rotates from a vertical storage position to a lower in use position. This enables the drying rack to be stored in a space saving manner when not in use and to be lowered to a position more convenient for hanging articles when in use.

Additionally, the angle the drying rack lies at as determined by the stopping pegs may be modified using height adjusting blocks which increase the horizontal distance between hanging articles thereby causing them to more quickly dry.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
Considered broadly, the invention is of the clothes drying rack type but differs markedly from existing clothes drying racks in that it is mounted to or suspended from an overhead structure such as a ceiling and rotates or folds from a vertical storage position to a lower in use position.
The drying rack consists of a plurality of drying rods which attach to opposing side members.
One of the drying rods runs through the side members and pivotally mounts to opposing support arms so as to provide pivotal movement from the vertical storage position to the lower in use position. The angle which the drying rack lies when placed in the lower in use position is determined by stopping pegs attached to the support arms, which prevent the drying rack from rotating downwards to a completely vertical position. The support arms attach to mounting brackets which in turn are mounted to or suspended from an overhead structure.
When not in use the drying rack is held in a vertical position by removable locking pegs.
Advantageously, height adjusting blocks can be inserted between the pivot drying rod and the stopping pegs to reduce the angle the drying rack rests at. Using the height adjusting blocks increases the horizontal distance between hanging clothes, thereby causing articles to dry faster.

DESCRIPTION
Figures 1-5 show the rotating clothes drying rack apparatus including mounting brackets 1 which generally include rectangular base plates 2, adapted to be mounted to or suspended from a ceiling using suitable fasteners such as screws or bolts 3, and inner 4 and outer 5 vertical mounting structures attached to the base plates 2 using appropriate means of attachment such as screws and adhesive. The inner 4 and outer 5 vertical mounting structures are in turn fastened to vertically oriented support arms 6 using, for example, dowels 7 as illustrated in Figures 1, 3 and 5.
The drying rack 8 comprises of a plurality of drying rods 9 with Figures 1 and 3 showing two drying rods 9 attached to opposing side members 10 adapted for attachment, while the third drying rod 11 runs through each of the side members 10 and pivotally mounts to opposing vertically oriented support arms 6 adapted to receive it, thereby becoming a pivot point or pivot drying rod 11 on which the drying rack 8 manually rotates.
As seen in Figure 1, stopping pegs 12 are positioned in locations adapted to receive them on the support arms 6 at a point below the pivot drying rod 11. The stopping pegs 12 horizontally extend in the same plane as the drying rods 9 so as to halt the downward movement of the side members 10 and in turn the drying rack 8 when rotated, and as such determine the angle the drying rack 8 rests at in the lower in use position.
When the drying rack 8 is in the vertical storage position as shown in Figures 1 and 2, insertion of the removable locking pegs 13 through aligned holes in the support arms 6 and the side members 10 locks the drying rack 8 in a vertical position parallel with the support arms 6.
Generally the removable locking pegs 13 will consist of a rod 14 intersected at one end by a smaller rod 15 thereby forming a "T" shaped object.
Figure 5 shows the drying rack 8 in the lower in use position and the height adjusting blocks 16 inserted between the pivot drying rod 11 and the stopping pegs 12, thereby reducing the downward angle the drying rack 8 lies when in the lower in use position and increasing the horizontal distance between drying rods 9.
As shown in Figures 5, 6 and 7 the height adjusting blocks 16 are typically rectangular in shape and have a portion removed in the middle 17 which coincides with the shape and size of the stopping pegs 12 so as to allow the height adjusting blocks 16 to sit flush on the stopping pegs 12.
It is to be understood that various alterations, modifications and/or additions may be incorporated into the various constructions and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit or ambit of the invention.
Figure 2 is a side view with the removable locking pegs inserted and the drying rack in the vertical storage position.
Figure 3 is a front view of the drying rack in the lower in use position with a cross-sectional view of the upper section of a support arm and mounting bracket.
Figure 4 is a cross sectional side view of the drying rack in the lower in use position.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional side view of the drying rack in the lower in use position with the height adjusting blocks inserted.
