Abstract

An apparatus and method for transporting compressed gases or similar materials. The apparatus includes an exterior housing dimensioned for intermodal transportation that contains a rack that holds pressure vessels.
The apparatus may be loaded with pressure vessels and the vessels filled within the apparatus. The apparatus may be transferred between modes of transportation along a delivery route without unloading the vessels from the apparatus.

Claims (17)

1. An apparatus comprising:

an external housing dimensioned for intermodal transportation;
a rack within the exterior housing; and a pressure vessel having a body and a neck, the pressure vessel retained within the exterior housing in a fixed relation by the rack.
2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pressure vessel comprises:
a metal core; and a composite layer surrounding the core.
3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the exterior housing completely encloses the rack and pressure vessel.
4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the rack engages the pressure vessel by at least two points along the body of the pressure vessel.
5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the composite layer comprises a thickened region to engage the rack and to prevent longitudinal movement of the pressure vessel within the rack.
6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the external housing comprises:

at least one stop to prevent longitudinal movement of the rack within the external housing.
7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the exterior housing provides access to the pressure vessel to service the pressure vessel while the pressure vessel is contained within the exterior housing.
8. A method comprising:

loading a composite reinforced pressure vessel onto a rack; and enclosing the rack and pressure vessel in an exterior housing dimensioned for intermodal transportation.
9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

restricting longitudinal movement of the pressure vessel relative to the rack.
10. The method of claim 9, wherein restricting longitudinal movement comprises:

providing the rack with a friction enhancing cushion at a point where the pressure vessel engages the rack.
11. The method of claim 9, wherein restricting longitudinal movement comprises:

thickening a composite reinforced layer adjacent at a point at which the rack engages the pressure vessel.
12. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

restricting longitudinal movement of the rack relative to the exterior housing.
13. A method comprising:

filling a pressure vessel on a rack and enclosed in an exterior housing of an intermodal transportation unit;

loading the intermodal transportation unit onto a first mode of transportation for a first transportation segment; and loading the intermodal transportation unit onto a second transportation mode for a second transportation segment.
14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:
emptying the pressure vessel.
15. The method of claim 14, further comprising:

emptying the pressure vessel without removing the pressure vessel from the exterior housing.
16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

emptying the pressure vessel without removing the exterior housing from the intermodal transportation unit.
17. The method of claim 14, further comprising:
refilling the pressure vessels; and reshipping the intermodal transportation unit.
