Abstract

An ostomy pouch (10) is defined by a front wall (12) and a rear wall (14) having a stoma aperture (18). One or more rupturable capsules (24) are carried on a carrier or intervening wall (44) welded to the front and rear walls at a common weld seam (16). When desired, a capsule (24) can be ruptured by squeezing, the pouch wall together at that position, to dispense the contents (for example, a deodorising agent, a disinfectant or a preservative). In one form, the carrier does not cover the stoma aperture. In another form, the contents are dispensed on the side facing the front wall (12), and the curtain (44) shields the stoma aperture (18), to prevent the agent spurting out or contacting the stoma. In another form, one or more rupturable capsules may be arranged on the front wall (12) or on the rear wall (14). A plurality of the capsules (24) may contain different agents if desired. In another form, one or more self-dissolving capsules, for example, of gelatine, may be introduced into the pouch to dispense the agent in response to environmental conditions (for example, temperature/humidity) within the pouch.

Claims (29)

1. An ostomy or incontinence pouch comprising a first wall and a second wall defining an envelope, and a capsule containing an agent for affecting the contents of the pouch, the capsule being captive in a capsule containing region of the pouch defined on one side by the first wall, and on the other side by plastics material secured to the first wall at one or more positions around the capsule, wherein the positions of the regions are separated by one or more gaps to allow release of the agent from said region when the capsule is ruptured.
2. The pouch according to claim 1, wherein the capsule is responsive to humidity.
3. The pouch according to claim 1, wherein the capsule is responsive to temperature.
4. The pouch according to claim 1, wherein the capsule is loose in the pouch.
5. The pouch according to claim 1, wherein the size of the or each gap is smaller than the size of the capsule at least prior to rupturing, thereby to prevent escape of the capsule.
6. The pouch according to claim 1, wherein said sheet of plastic material is a cover sheet within the pouch.
7. The pouch according to claim 6, wherein the cover sheet comprises openings and/or is of porous material.
8. The pouch according to claim 1, wherein a first capsule and a second capsule of a plurality of capsules contain respective non-identical agents.
9. The ostomy or incontinence pouch according to claim 1 comprising a carrier located between the first wall and second wall, the carrier, first wall and second wall being welded together at a common weld seam, and the carrier carrying or comprising the capsule containing an agent for affecting the contents of the pouch in use, the capsule being positioned clear of the weld seam, and the agent being releasable from the capsule in use.
10. The pouch according to claim 9, wherein a least a portion of the carrier is located above a stoma aperture of the pouch.
11. The pouch according to claim 9, wherein the carrier is shaped and/or is positioned so as not the block substantially a stoma aperture of the pouch.
12. The pouch according to claim 11, wherein the carrier has a curved shape.
13. The pouch according to claim 9, wherein the carrier is in the form of a curtain.
14. The pouch according to claim 9, wherein the carrier shields a stoma aperture defined in the rear wall.
15. The pouch according to claim 9, wherein the carrier is secured at least at an uppermost portion.
16. The pouch according to claim 9, wherein the carrier is secured at least at opposite side edge regions.
17. The pouch according to claim 9, wherein a lower edge of the carrier is unsecured.
18. An ostomy or incontinence pouch comprising a front wall, a rear wall, and a carrier located between the walls, the carrier and walls being welded together at a common weld seam, and the carrier carrying or comprising a capsule containing an agent for affecting the contents of the pouch in use, the capsule being positioned clear of the weld seam, and the agent being releasable from the capsule in use.
19. The pouch according to claim 18, wherein at least a portion of the carrier is located above a stoma aperture of the pouch.
20. The pouch according to claim 18 or 19, wherein the carrier is shaped and/or is positioned so as not to block substantially a stoma aperture of the pouch.
21. The pouch according to claim 20, wherein the carrier has a curved shape.
22. The pouch according to claim 18, 19, 20 or 21, wherein the carrier is in the form of a curtain.
23. The pouch according to any of claims 18 to 22, wherein the carrier shields a stoma aperture defined in the rear wall.
24. The pouch according to any of claims 18 to 23, wherein the carrier is secured at least at an uppermost portion.
25. The pouch according to any of claims 18 to 24, wherein the carrier is secured at least at opposite side edge regions.
26. The pound according to any of claims 18 to 25, wherein a lower edge of the carrier is unsecured.
27. An ostomy or incontinence pouch comprising a front wall having an aperture therein for receiving stomal discharge, the rear wall carrying or comprising a capsule containing an agent for affecting the contents of the pouch in use, the agent being releasable from the capsule into the pouch, in use.
28. The pouch according to any of claims 9 to 27 comprising a plurality of capsules.
29. The pouch according to claim 28, wherein a first capsule and a second capsule of the plurality of capsules contain respective non-identical agents.
