Abstract

The present invention provides for an antistatic flexible fabric material (10) formed from woven, axially oriented crystalline polypropylene yarn (11,12) having a coating of flexible thermoplastic polymer or blend (22) on one or both sides. The fabric may also contain a layer of cellulose material (24) laminated to the uncoated side. Antistatic properties are imparted to the fabric by including a polyol ester of a C10 to C28 fatty acid in the coating and optionally in the polypropylene yarn (11, 12). The present invention also provides for a quasi-conductive woven fabric section including quasi-conductive fibers which reduce the potential for incendiary discharge. The woven fabric section (10) may further include an antistatic coating. The coating may be applied to an entire surface of the woven fabric section or it may coat about one-half of the section.

Claims (17)

1. Fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container with a reduced energy of electrostatic discharge for use in a combustible environment comprising:
a woven fabric configured to form the flexible fabric container; and said woven fabric having an electrical resistivity to allow the flow of electricity through the fabric at a rate to of discharge of below about one-hundred nanocoulombs per individual discharge with the fabric charged at greater than about negative ten thousand volts.
2. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 1, wherein said woven fabric has an electrical resistivity to allow the flow of electricity through the fabric at a rate of discharge of less than about 15 nanocoulombs per individual discharge with the fabric charged at greater than about negative ten thousand volts.
3. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 1, wherein said woven fabric comprises:
a plurality of quasi-conductive fibers positioned preferably about one-half to about four inches apart from one another, each of said quasi-conductive fibers being configured to effect corona discharge such as at their ends or at other discharge points, and having sufficient resistance to substantially avoid incendiary discharge at their ends or along their lengths at a rate that results in incendiary type discharges from said fabric in use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container in a combustible environment having a minimum ignition energy of 0.25 mT.
4. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein said quasi-conductive fibers are woven into the flexible fabric container.
5. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein said quasi-conductive fibers are positioned preferably about one inch apart from one another.
6. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein at least one of said quasi-conductive fibers includes a conductive sheath and an insulating core; and wherein at least a portion of said insulating core is not covered by said conductive sheath.
7. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 1, wherein said fabric includes a coating of a compound having antistatic properties applied to cover a surface of said walls.
8. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 1, wherein said fabric container is a flexible intermediate bulk container.
9. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein at least one of said quasi-conductive fibers comprises a conductive core and an insulating sheath.
10. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein at least one of said quasi-conductive fibers comprises a con-conductive core and a quasi-conductive sheath.
11. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein at least one of said quasi-conductive fibers comprises a plurality of conductive, quasi-conductive, and non-conductive materials.
12. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein at least one of said quasi-conductive fibers comprises a plurality of conductive and non-conductive materials.
13. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein said woven fabric comprises:
a plurality of warp fibers and a plurality of weft fibers.
14. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 13, wherein said plurality of warp fibers is substantially perpendicular to said plurality of weft fibers, and wherein at least a first quasi-conductive fiber is ubstantially parallel with said warp fibers; and at least a second quasi-conductive fiber is substantially parallel with said weft fibers.
15. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 3, wherein said quasi-conductive fibers are continuous fibers.
16. The fabric for use in an ungrounded type flexible fabric container according to claim 11, wherein at least one of said quasi-conductive fibers further comprises at least one corona discharge point at an end of at least one of said conductive and quasi-conductive materials.
