Abstract
A precast concrete retaining wall construction element for retaining a soil mass in a railway installation or the like includes an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron where a rectangular front wall and an integral stem. The front wall defines an area of between about 18.75 and 75 square feet and wherein the ratio of the width of the face panel to its height is between about 0.75 to about 3Ø A reinforced element including an upward extension, an improved shear key, and stacked arrangement are also disclosed.
Claims (42)
1. A precast concrete retaining wall construction including a plurality of stacked elements for retaining a soil mass, said construction comprising:
a first element including an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said front wall is between 30 and 40 square feet, an integral stem extending rearwardly from said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass, said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom walls each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a second element including an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said first wall is between 30 and 40 square feet, an integral stem extending rearwardly from said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass, said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom walls each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
said second element disposed on top of said first element in an aligned and abutting relationship; and a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in an upper wall of said stem in said first element and within a corresponding notch in a bottom wall of said stem in said second element.
a first element including an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said front wall is between 30 and 40 square feet, an integral stem extending rearwardly from said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass, said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom walls each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a second element including an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said first wall is between 30 and 40 square feet, an integral stem extending rearwardly from said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass, said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom walls each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
said second element disposed on top of said first element in an aligned and abutting relationship; and a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in an upper wall of said stem in said first element and within a corresponding notch in a bottom wall of said stem in said second element.
2. A precast concrete retaining wall construction including a plurality of stacked elements for retaining a soil mass according to claim 1 in which the face panel in each of said elements has a ratio of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel of between about 1.2 to about 1.6.
3. A precast concrete retaining wall construction including a plurality of stacked elements for retaining a soil mass according to claim 2 in which each of said face panels has a height which is equal to the height of its integral stem and wherein the height and width of said two face panels are equal.
4. A precast concrete retaining wall construction including a plurality of stacked elements for retaining a soil mass according to claim 2 and which includes an additional element with an upper extension of its face panel extending upwardly for a distance of between about 1 to 5 feet above said upper wall of its integral stem.
5. A precast concrete retaining wall construction including a plurality of stacked elements for retaining a soil mass according to claim 4 in which said face panel of said additional element extends upwardly by a distance of about 3 feet above said upper wall of its integral stem.
6. A precast concrete retaining wall construction including a plurality of stacked elements for retaining a soil mass according to claim 5 in which said face panel of said additional element extends upwardly by a distance of about 5 feet above said upper wall of its integral stem and which includes a reinforcing rod which extends upwardly into said upper extension of said additional element above the upper surface of its integral stem.
7. A precast concrete retaining wall construction including a plurality of stacked elements for retaining a soil mass according to claim 6 which includes a buttress between said integral stem and said upper extension.
8. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element for retaining a soil mass comprising:
an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said front panel is between about 30 and about 40 square feet and the ration of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel is between about 1.2 to about 1.6;
an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom wall each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls of said stem and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second element placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element.
an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said front panel is between about 30 and about 40 square feet and the ration of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel is between about 1.2 to about 1.6;
an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom wall each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls of said stem and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second element placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element.
9. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 8 in which said top wall of said solid face panel defines a flat surface from said front wall to said rear wall of said face panel.
10. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 8 in which said face panel and said integral stem have equal heights.
11. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 8 in which the face of each of said pan inserts defines an area of between about 0.56 square feet and 1.56 square feet.
12. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 8 in which a face of each of said pan inserts defines an area of about one square foot.
13. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim in which said solid face panel and said stem each have a thickness of between about 7 inches and about 8 inches.
14. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 8 in which each of said notches has a width of about one foot and a depth of about 0.5 feet.
15. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 8 in which each of said shear keys extend outwardly from said integral stem on each side thereof by distance of about one-half inch.
16. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim in which said integral stem includes a plurality of rows of vertically aligned pan inserts to thereby provide solid concrete columns between said columns.
17. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim which includes a trapezoidal support member between said face panel and said integral stem.
18. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element for retaining a soil mass comprising:
an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said front wall is between about 30 and about 40 square feet and the ratio of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel is between about 1.2 to about 1.6;
an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom wall each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second element placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element;
and two steel reinforcing rods extending through and encased by said integral stem and said face panel with one of said reinforcing bars extending into a first portion of said face panel and the other of said reinforcing bars extending into an opposite portion of said face panel.

an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom wall each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second element placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element;
and two steel reinforcing rods extending through and encased by said integral stem and said face panel with one of said reinforcing bars extending into a first portion of said face panel and the other of said reinforcing bars extending into an opposite portion of said face panel.
19. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 18 in which said integral stem includes a plurality of horizontally aligned rows and vertically aligned columns of pan inserts.
20. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 19 in which each of said rows of aligned pan inserts includes three pan inserts and which include two sets of steel reinforcing rods with one set of two reinforcing rods passing between the first and second pan insert in each of said columns and in which a second set of two steel reinforcing rods pass between the second and the third columns of pan inserts and in which one of said steel reinforcing rods in each of said sets extends into said face panel in a first direction and the other reinforcing rod in said sets extending in an opposite direction into said face panel.
21. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 20, in which said face panel extends upwardly for a distance of about 3 feet above said upper wall of said integral stem.
22. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 20, in which each of said pan inserts defines an area of between about 0.56 square feet and about 1.56 square feet.
23. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 22 in which each of said faces of said pan insert defines an area of about one square foot.
24. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 20 in which said face panel and said stem each have a thickness of between about 7 inches and 8 inches.
25. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 24 in which each of said notches has a width of about one foot and a depth of about 0.5 feet.
26. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 25 in which each of said shear keys extend outwardly from said integral stem by a distance of about one-half inch on each side thereof.
27. A reinforced precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim 18 which includes a trapezoidal support member between said face panel and said integral stem.
28. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element and shear key for retaining a soil mass, comprising:
an upstanding solid face panel having a shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and where the area of said front wall is between about 30 and about 40 square feet and the ratio of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel is between about 1.2 to about 1.6;
an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel and in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a sloping rear wall and said upper and bottom wall each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein a shear key in the form of a polyhedron constructed to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second element placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element; and said shear key including a face having a cross-sectional area in the shape of a hexagon and defining an area of about one square foot.
an upstanding solid face panel having a shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and where the area of said front wall is between about 30 and about 40 square feet and the ratio of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel is between about 1.2 to about 1.6;
an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel and in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a sloping rear wall and said upper and bottom wall each defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein a shear key in the form of a polyhedron constructed to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second element placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element; and said shear key including a face having a cross-sectional area in the shape of a hexagon and defining an area of about one square foot.
29. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element and shear key according to claim 28 in which said shear key includes fully encased steel reinforcing bars.
30. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element and shear key according to claim 29 in which said steel reinforcing bar has a U-shaped.
31. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim which includes two U-shaped reinforcing bars each of which includes two leg portions and a connecting member.
32. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim in which said shear key includes a first portion adjacent to a first hexagonal shaped face and a second portion adjacent to an opposite hexagonal face and in which a connecting member of a first of said U-shaped reinforcing bars is disposed in a first portion and a connecting member of the second of said U-shaped reinforcing bars is disposed in said second portion but in a crossed relationship with said connecting member of said second U-shaped reinforcing bar and wherein said leg portions of each of said U-shaped reinforcing bars extend inwardly in an overlapping relationship with the leg portions of the other U-shaped reinforcing bar.
33. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element and shear key according to claim 28 in which said shear key defines a hollow passage extending therethrough.
34. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element for retaining a soil mass in a railway installation, said element comprising:
an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said front wall is between about 18.75 and about 75 square feet and the ratio of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel is between about 0.75 to about 3.0;
an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom wall defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls of said integral stem and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second integral stem placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element; and, in which said face panel extends upwardly above said upper wall of said integral stem.
an upstanding solid face panel having the shape of a hexahedron with front and rear walls, a top wall, two side walls and a bottom wall and wherein the area of said front wall is between about 18.75 and about 75 square feet and the ratio of the width of said face panel to the height of said face panel is between about 0.75 to about 3.0;
an integral stem extending rearwardly from said rear wall of said face panel in a generally T-shaped arrangement for embedment in a soil mass;
said integral stem having an upper wall, a bottom wall, two side walls, a rear wall and said upper and bottom wall defining a notch therein and each of said side walls including a pan insert therein;
a shear key constructed and dimensioned to fit within one of said notches in one of said upper and bottom walls of said integral stem and adapted to fit within a corresponding notch in an abutting stem of a second integral stem placed on top of or below said retaining wall construction element; and, in which said face panel extends upwardly above said upper wall of said integral stem.
35. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim wherein a portion of said face panel which extends upwardly above said upper wall of said integral stem defines an area of about 37 1/2 square feet and a portion of said front wall below said upper wall of said integral stem defines an area of about 37 1/2 square feet and wherein the ratio of the width of each of said portions to the height of each of said portions is between about 1.2 to about 1.6.
36. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim which includes an integral reinforcing wall which is integral with but behind said face panel and between said face panel and said integral stem and wherein said reinforcing wall extends upwardly from said integral stem by about two-thirds of the distance from the top of the integral stem to the top of said face panel.
37. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim which includes a buttress for supporting said extension of said face panel.
38. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim which includes a buttress for supporting said extension of said face panel.
39. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim which includes a buttress for supporting said extension of said face panel.
40. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim in which said buttress extends between and is integral with said extension of said face panel and said integral stem.
41. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim in which said buttress extends between and is integral with said reinforcing wall and said integral stem.
42. A precast concrete retaining wall construction element according to claim which includes two buttresses.
