Abstract

The invention relates to a device for applying colorant to individual strands of hair, comprising a tongue-shaped handle with a brush at one end and a retaining device for retaining the strands at the other, as illustrated in fig 1. The device is characterised in that the bristles (12) of the brush (10) are shorter in the centre of said brush than at the sides and that the retaining device (20) has a depression (80) in the centre, which lies opposite the shorter bristles.

Description

Device For Applying Colorant To Individual Strands of Hair The invention relates to a device for applying colorant to individual strands of hair to produce different colours or highlights in the hair.

Devices for applying colorant only to individual strands of the hair and not to all of the hair are known. A clamp-shaped device is described in US 2,705,499 which has a type of brush on one side of the clamp and a device for applying liquid on the opposite side. A device of this type is relatively difficult to handle and has, moreover, the disadvantage that strands of various thicknesses cannot be treated. A device for applying colorant to individual strands is also known from EP 0884008 which is also in the form of a clamp, a part of the clamp being provided with a comb-like or brush-like structure which interacts with a retaining device on the other part consisting of two projections having a flat surface between them. It is also disadvantageous in this device that individual strands can only be held with difficulty and virtually only thin strands can be treated.

Thus, there is a need for an improved device for applying colorant to individual strands of hair which is easy to handle and also enables the treatment of st'rands of different thicknesses.

The device according to the invention for applying colorant, the term colorant is understood to refer to tints, bleaching agents and hair dyes, to individual strands of hair consists of a tongue-shaped handle which can consist of a flexible or dimensionally stable plastic material or can consist of several parts, so that the ends of the handle can be easily brought together. The multipart design can, for example, be obtained thereby that two handle parts are riveted together or are connected to one another by a press fit.

The one end of the tongue-shaped handle is provided with a brush and the other end with a retaining device for holding the strands. Both the brush and the retaining device can be detachably connected with the handle, so that brushes or retaining devices of various shapes can be used.

The brush has several rows of bristles, said bristles being shorter in the centre of the brush than on the sides according to the invention. The number of rows of bristles with shorter bristles can differ according to the thickness of the strands to be treated, so that for this reason also it is desirable if the brush head is made so as to be interchangeable.

The opposite end of the handle has a retaining device for securing the strands when applying the colorant, said retaining device having a recess in the centre opposite the shorter bristles of the brush. The result of this is that more colorant can be absorbed in this recess and that hair strands of various thicknesses can be treated dependent on the design of the middle bristles of the brush and the depth of the recess which together form a type of channel.

Preferably, the brush is provided with a pump for supplying the colorant in order to make it unnecessary to take it off during the treatment. The retaining device on the other end of the handle preferably has a storage unit for excess colorant, so that it can be optionally used again when treating the next strand.
During application, a designated amount of colorant is applied to the brush,,then a hair strand is taken from the remaining hair and placed into the retaining device of the device. The device is then pressed together in such a way that the two ends come in contact and then pulled from the scalp to the end of the strand. The colorant spreads continuously and uniformly in the selected strand during this procedure.

According to an aspect of the present invention there is provided a device for applying colorant to individual strands of hair, said device comprising:
a tongue-shaped handle having a brush at one end and a retaining device for holding the strand, said retaining device located on another end of the handle, said brush comprising a plurality of rows of bristles including at least one row of bristles in the centre of the brush and at least one row of bristles on at least one side of the brush, wherein the bristles of the at least one row in the centre of the brush are shorter than the bristles of the at least one row on the at least one side of the brush, and wherein the retaining device has a recess in the centre of the retaining device, said centre of the retaining device facing the shorter bristles.
The invention shall now be described in greater detail with reference to the drawings.

Fig. 1 shows a side view of the device according to the invention, Fig. 2 shows a further emodiment in a side view.

As can be seen in Fig. 1, the device 1 consists of a tongue-shaped handle 40 which, for example, can be a flexible plastic tube. The tongue-shaped handle 40 has two opposite ends 5 and 30, said handle being folded back on itself by about 1800. The first end 5 of the handle 40 has a detachable brush 10 which has a plurality of bristle rows 12. In this case, the inner rows of bristles in the centre are shorter than the outer rows of bristles. The colorant or bleaching agent or tint for the treatment of an individual hair strand of the customer is applied 3a to the brush 10. The brush 10 can, for example, be fastened to the handle 40 with an adhesive tape, by a press fit or in a similar manner. The second end 30 of the handle 40 has a detachable retaining device 20 which is connected here with the handle end by fastening means 35 as with the first end by fastening means 15. The retaining device 20 has a recess 80 in the centre, so that the selected strand can be firmly secured and excess colorant is stored. During use, the retaining device 20 is fastened to the surface of the end 30 of the handle by fastening means 35. The fastening means 35 make it possible to remove this retaining device 20, if desired, and to replace it by other retaining devices of a different shape.

As can be seen in Fig. 2, the handle can consist of several parts, in particular of two parts, and of equally long partial pieces 50 and 60 which are connected together at their free ends by a securing device 100.

The device according to the invention is easy to handle and suitable both for the treatment of strands by the customer at home and also for professional use. As a result of the design of the brush and the retaining device, a uniform and continuous coloring of strands is made possible, it being possible to treat strands of various thicknesses.
