Description

TITLE OF THE INVENTION
MESH COVER FOR RECYCLIf'JG SOXES
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates generally to flexible covers for recycling boxes and particularly to a flexible cover for a recycling box, which is easily and removably attached to the box without the use of tools.
EACI~CGROIIND OF THE INVENTION
The use of recycling boxes is very common in many communities.
Such boxes are generally open-top plastic containers, light in weight, to be picked up and emptied by a person. Since items in a recycling box may include papers, plastic or glass bottles, aluminum cans, or the like, which are light weight, these can easily be blown out of the box when the box is left on the curbside, awaiting its content to be picked up.
Covers to restrict or prevent spillage of the contents of recycling boxes and similar bins are already known. For example U.S. patent No. 5,819,974 to Caldwell discloses a generally flexible cover, which is fixedly secured to one side of the box opening and is releasably attached to the opposite side by hooks.. A C-clip or a rivet is used to fixedly secure one edge of the cover to the rim of the box opening, and the hooks include an elastic stretch cord which is secured to the edge of the cover and is long enough to present the hook beyond the cover edge. In one embodiment of the flexible cover according to the Caldwell patent, the cover is not fixedly attached to top box, but rather is removably attached thereto, by means of hooks. Thus, in this embodiment, the cover is secured to the box on both opposite sides by means of hooks.
Di Filippo et al. in U.S. patent No. 5,382,451 discloses a flexible cover which extends between opposite elongate support members, and comprises a plurality of elongate elastic members attached along the other opposite sides of the cover. The cover is fixedly attached to one side of the box opening through one support member which comprises holes for receiving fasteners, and is releasably attached to the opposite side by hooks.
It can be seen that the flexible covers for recycling boxes as described above have a generally complicated structure and their installation on a box requires the use of tools. In addition, they are not easily releasable from the box opening by for example one simple movement. Indeed, as can be contemplated in the cover according to the Di Filippo et al. patent, the operator needs to effect at least two movements, which include pulling and lifting up the hand8e in order to release the cover. In the Caldwell patent, even more than two movements might be necessary to release all the hooks.
There is therefore a need for a cover of relatively simple structure, which is easily secured to a recycling box for example without the use of tools, and which is similarly easy to operate and to remove.
StlMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a flexible cover for a recycling box, which is easily and economically manufacl:ured and which is easily mounted on the box top without the use of tools.
It is another object of the invention to provide a flexible cover for a recycling box, which is easily released to empty the content of the box, and remains attached to the box.
In accordance with one aspect, the: invention provides a cover, releasably attachable across opposite first and second sides of an upper opening of a recycling box to reduce unintended spillage of contents from the box. The cover comprises a flexible mesh having sides to extend across said opposite first and second sides of the opening of the box. A fabric strip extends along each of the sides of the mesh. Cooperating hook and pile attachment means are secured respectively to the fabric strip extending along a first side of the mesh and to the first side of the box opening, so as to permit releasable attachment of the first side of the mesh to the first side of the box opening. Attachment means are secured respectively to the fabric strip extending along a second side of the mesh opposite to said first side of the mesh and to the second side of the box opening, opposite to the first side of the box opening so as to permit releasable attachment of the second side of the mesh to the second side of the box opening. Preferably, the cooperating hook and pile attachment means comprises a hook strip and means to secure the hook strip to the box opening.
In accordance with another aspect, the invention provides a kit for providing a releasably attachable cover across opposite first and second sides of an upper opening of a recycling box to reduce unintended spillage of contents from the box. The kit comprises a flexible mesh having sides to extend across said opposite first and second sides of the opening of the box.
In accordance with another aspect, the invention provides a recycling box of generally rectangular configuration, comprising an upper opening including opposite first and second sides, a pair of hook strips secured to said opposite sides of the box, and a mesh cover having sides to extend across said opposite sides of the box. The mesh has a fabric strip extending along each of its sides. A pile strip is secured to the fabric strip that extends along a first side of the mesh, so as to releasably mate with one of the hook strips. The fabric -3a-strip extending along a second side of the mesh opposite to said first side is constructed so as releasably mate with the other of the hook strips.
In accordance with yet another aspect, the invention provides a recycling box of generally rectangular configuration which comprises an upper opening including opposite first and second sides, a pair of hook strips secured to the opposite sides of the box, and a mesh cover having sides to extend across the opposite sides of the box. The mesh has a fabric strip extending along each of its sides, a pile strip secured to the fabric strip extending along a first side of the mesh, so as to releasably mate with one of the hook strips. The fabric strip which extends along a second side of the mesh opposite to the first side is constructed so as releasably mate with the other of the hook strips.

. ._ The box cover according to the present invention is both simple and economical to construct, and easy to install and operate.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAW'INt~S
Other features and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following detailed description of tt~e preferred embodiment of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cover according to the present invention, from the underside;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a recycle box in conjunction with a cover shown in exploded view according to the invention; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of a recycle box with the cover attached but shown in an open configuration.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Variations within the scope of this invention will be apparent from the described embodiment and it is intended that the present description is merely illustrative of the inventive features encompassed by the appended claims.
As illustrated in Figure 1, a cover '10 according to the invention comprises a mesh 15 of a generally rectangular configuration. The cover 10 has four sides identified A, B9 C and ~, each having a fabric strip, respectively identified 12, 14, 16 and 18 secured thereto. Two tabs 19a and 19b are attached to each end of side ~ of the mesh 15. The fabric strip 14 which is attached to the side B
of the mesh 15 opposite to the side D bearing the tabs 19a, 19b comprises pile means on one face; this face constitutes the under face of the cover.
In a preferred embodiment, the long sicles A and C of the cover 10 are longer than the short sides 30 and 32 of a typical recycling box 34. The length of the long side A or C of the cover 10 is about 16.5 inches and can range from about 12 to 20 about inches. The short sides B and D of the cover 10 are generally shorter than the long sides 36 and 38 of the rim 40 of typical recycle box 34.
The length of the short side B or D of the cover 10 is about 12.5 inches and can range from about 8 to about 16 inches.
The width of the fabric strips 12, 14, 16 and 18 bordering the mesh 15 can vary from about 0.5 to about 1 inch. Preferably, the width of the fabric strip 14 having pile means as well as the width of its opposite counterpart, fabric strip 18 is larger than the width of the other fabric strips 12 and 16. In a preferred embodiment, as illustrated, fabric strips 14 and 18 are each about 1 inch wide and fabric strips 12 and 16 are each about 0.5 inches wide.
The two hook strips 22 and 24 which accompany the cover 10 according to the invention are each provided with hook means on one face and adhesive means on the opposite face, for securing the strips 22 and 24 respectively to the borders of the long sides 36 and 38 of a recycling box opening, as best illustrated in Fig. 2. The hook means is preferably provided on the whole top surface of the strips 22 and 24 but can also be provided on a partial surface thereof.
The long side of each strip 22 and 24 has a length which is at least equal to the length of the long side of the fabric strip 14. Preferably, the long side of each strip 22 and 24 is equal to the length of the long side of pile means 20 provided on fabric strip 14. The hook strips 22 and 24 are attached to sides 36 and 38 of the rim 40 of recycling box 34 as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
The mesh, fabric strips and tabs are preferably made of nylon and specifically, the fabric strip 18 which is secured to side D of the mesh 15 is made of a material that is capable of adhering to the hook means on strip.
The tabs 19a and 19b are of generally rectangular configuration and are each attached along their width to one end of side D of the mesh 15. The length of the tab can vary from about 2 to about 5 inches and its width can vary from about 0.5 to about 2 inches. In a preferred embodiment, each tab has a length of 3 inches 6 ..
and a width of 1 inch. The tabs are preferably made of nylon and have a bright colour such that they can be easily visually located by a user.
In a preferred embodiment, the pile means 20 on one face (under face) of the fabric strip 14 is provided on a partial surface of the strip, and extends centrally therein. For example, on a 12.5 inch x 1 inch fabric strip, a pile means of about 12 inch x 0.75 inch can be provided. It should however be contemplated that the pile means can be provided on the whole under face of fabric strip 14.
The mesh 15 of the cover 10 can have therein openings of about 1 inch wide, which would permit a user to see what is in the box. The fabric strips 12, 14, 16 and 18 as well as the tabs 19a and 19b are attached to the mesh 15 by conventional means such as for example sewing.
In use, the user attaches the two hook strips 22 and 24 to opposite sides 36 and 38 of the rim 40 of recycle box 34. The cover 10 is then attached to the hook strip 22 by securirsg pile means 20 thereon. The adherence between the hook means on strip 22 and pile means 20 on fabric strip 14 is strong enough to maintain the cover 10 secured to the box 34 in open configuration as illustrated in Fig. 3, and objects to be recycled (not shown) are placed in the box 34. The cover 10 is then draped across the top of the box 34 and affixed to strip 24 through fabric strip 18. The recycle box 34 with its content (not shown) substantially secured from spillage is ready to be placed on the curbside. When it is desired to empty the box 34, the user simply holds one tab 19a or 19b and detaches the cover 10 and lets it hang back over the opposite side 36 of the box 34, and empty the contents. The adherence between the hook means on strips 24 and fabric strip 18 is preferably not as strong as the adherence between the hook means on strip 22 and the pile means 20 on fabric strip 14, such that when the user pulls the tab 19a or 19b, only side D of the cover 10 is released.
It should be noted that the hook and pile arrangement of the cover 10 and strips 22 and 24 according to the invention can be inverted. The hook means can be provided on fabric strip 14 attached to the mesh 15 and the pile means _7_ can be provided on the strips 22 and 24 to be secured to the sides 36 and 38 of the rim 40 of box 34. Likewise, the fabric strip 14 can also be attached to the other strip 24.
The hook and pile arrangement according to the invention is preferably of VeIcroT"" type.
Variations within the scope of this invention will be apparent from the described embodiment and it is intended that the present description is merely illustrative of the invention features encompassed by the appended claims.
