Abstract

An anti-theft device securable to a window glass pane mounting plate within a door interior cavity defined by an outer door panel and an inner door panel for preventing insertion of a thin instrument into a gap formed between a window glass pane.and a rubber molding to unlock a vehicle door. The anti-theft device includes a base fixedly secured to the mounting plate, a hinge fixedly secured to the base, and a shield pivotally attached to the hinge. The shield has a hinge end and a distal end. The shield is movable between a tucked position in which the distal end of the shield is disposed adjacent the base and an extended position in which the distal end of the shield is spaced apart from the base for restricting access of the thin instrument therepast.

Description

ANTI-THEFT" DEVICE
Background of the Invention 1. Field of the Invention This invention relates to an anti-theft device for vehicles. More particularly, the invention is directed to a device that prevents access between a window glass pane and a rubber molding surrounding a window frame to block access to a door latching mechanism with a thin instrument or tool.
2. Description of the Related Art The insertion of a thin metal tool, such as a slim-jim device, or a stiff wire into a gap between a window glass pane and rubber molding around a door window frame to unlock a vehicle door is a common vehicle theft technique.
Anti-theft devices have been developed to prevent such unauthorized entry into a vehicle.
Many such devices have been formed of plastic materials. These plastic devices are susceptible to being shattered by a hammer or a similar tool. ~~s a result, thieves can then insert a thin metal tool or stiff wire ixito the door interior cavity and unlock the door. In addition, various devices have been provided for insertion within the interior door cavity. However, the limitation on these devices :has been the tendency for various parts of theses devices to become entangled with other components within the interior door cavity as the window glass pane is raised or lowered.

Thus, there is a need for a durable anti-theft device that may move freely within a door interior cavity to prevent it from getting entangled with other components of the door assembly as the window glass pane is raised and lowered.
Summary of the Invention The invention is directed to an anti-theft device that prevents access between a window glass pane and a rubber molding surrounding the window glass pane to block access to a door latching mechanism by a thin instrument or tool. The anti-theft device includes a base that is fixedly secured to the mounting plate of the window glass pane. The base has a first end and a second end. The anti-theft device also includes a hinge fixedly secured to the first end of the; base. In addition, the anti-theft device includes a shield pivotally attached to the hinge. The shield has a hinge end and a distal end. The shield is movable between a tucked position in which the distal end of the shield is disposed adjacent the base and an extended position in which the distal end of the shield is spaced apart from the base for restricting access of the thin instrument therepast.
Brief Description of the Drawings Advantages of the invention will be readily appreciated as the same becomes better understood by reference to the following detailed description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional, side view of a door interior cavity, partially cut away, and an anti-shield device of the invention positioned within the door interior cavity.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment Refernng to Figure l, a vehicle door is generally indicated at 10: The vehicle door 10 includes an outer door panel 12 and an inner door panel 14.
The outer door panel 12 and the inner door panel 14 define an interior door cavity 16 therebetween. An inner reinforcement 18 is positioned within the interior door cavity 16. The inner reinforcement 18, which is made from steel, provides structural support within the interior door cavity 16. The interior door cavity 16 houses various hardware components, including a mounting plate 20., which is connected to a window regulator (not shown). A door release assembly, indicated generally at 22, is also housed within the interior door cavity 16. The door release assembly 2,2 is operatively coxmected to a door latching mechanism (not shown) to allow locking and unlocking of the vehicle door 10. A door handle 24 for opening the vehicle door 10 is also shown. A window glass pane 26 is secured to the mounting plate 20 by a glass clamp 28. The mounting plate 20 is driven by the window regulator to move the window glass pane 26 between a raised position and a lowered position.
An anti-theft device, generally shown at 30, includes a base 32 fixedly secured to the mounting plate 20. The base 32 extends between a first end 34 and a second end 36. A hinge mechanism 38 is attached to the base 32 at the first end 34 thereof. A shield 40 is pivotally attached to the hinge mechanism 38. The shield 40 extends between a hinge end 42 at the hinge mechanism 38 and a distal end 44.
The base 32, the hinge mechanism 34, and the shield 40 may aill be fabricated using metal parts. As a result, a thief will not be able to access the door release mechanism by breaking the anti-theft device into pieces, as would be possible if the parts were made from plastic.
As the window glass pane 26 moves between a raised position and a lowered position, the anti-theft device 30, which is fixedly secured to the mounting plate 18, also moves with the mounting plate 18 between its raised and lowered positions. A guide wire 45 moves the shield 40 between a tucked position and the extended position. The guide wire 45 extends between two ends, one of which is secured to the door release assembly 22. The other end is secured to the shield 40.
The guide wire 45 is looped through a structure, i.e., the base 32 in the preferred embodiment, to direct the shield 40 toward its tucked position.
A rubber molding 46 is positioned at the outer door panel 12. The rubber molding 46 and the window glass pane 26 define a gap 48 therebetween.
The gap 48 runs from the rubber molding 46 into the door interior cavity 16. A
thief attempting to access the door latching mechanism via the door release assembly will generally insert a thin metal tool or stiff wire into the gap 48. In operation, the anti-theft device 30 will prevent such unauthorized access to the door release assembly 22. When the window glass pane 26 is in the raised position, the shield 40 is in an extended position so that the shield 40 acts as a burner to the insertion of a thin instrument or tool for accessing the door release assembly 22. When the window glass pane 26 is in the lowered position, the shield 40 does not act as a barrier to access to the door release assembly 22 since entry into the vehicle may be attained simply by reaching inside the open window and unlocking the vehicle door manually.
During movement of the window glass pane. 26 between the raised and lowered positions; the shield 40 may encounter further components housed within the interior door interior cavity 10. To ensure that the shield 40 is not caught by one of these components, and thus render the anti-theft device 30 inoperable, the guide wire 45 may be used to facilitate movement of the shield 40 v~ithin the narrow door interior cavity 16.
In a preferred embodiment, the anti-theft device 30 includes a piece of foam SO inserted between the base 32 and the shield 40. The foam piece 50 is S typically formed from a rubber material but may be formed from any of a number of materials. The foam piece 50 is resilient and may be wised to bias the shield 40 back to its extended position. ' The foam piece 50 also reduces unwanted noise produced from vibration of the metal shield 40 against the metal base 32.
Installation of the anti-theft device :30 may be accomplished at different points in the vehicle door assembly process. The anti-theft device 30 rnay be installed during the initial assembly of the vehicle door 10. Alteinatively, the anti-theft device 30 may be installed during servicing of the hardware c~mponents within the interior door cavity 16. Finally, the anti-theft device 3U may be installed after complete assembly of the motor vehicle and at a time when no other servicing is 1 S required.
The inventian has been described in an illustrative manner. It is to be understood that the terminology, which has been used, is intended to be in the nature of words of description rather than of limitation.
Many modifications and variations of the invention are possible in light of the above teachings. Therefore, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced other than as specifically described.
