Abstract

L'invention concerne un revêtement réfractaire conçu pour un élément de cellule électrolytique servant à produire de l'aluminium. On prépare ce revêtement à partir d'une pâte aqueuse composée d'un matériau réfractaire en particules, par exemple, Tib¿2?, dispersée dans un complexe d'oxalate d'aluminium. On applique cette pâte liquide sous forme de revêtement sur la surface de l'élément, par exemple, un bloc de cathode, et on le sèche, de manière à créer une surface réfractaire dure sur cet élément. On peut constituer sur place ce complexe d'oxalate d'aluminium pendant la préparation de la pâte liquide par mélange d'acide oxalique et d'un agent pulvérulent de précipitation électrostatique composé d'oxyde d'aluminium. Après immersion de l'élément pourvu du revêtement réfractaire dans un bain de cryolite à température élevée d'une cellule d'électrolyse d'aluminium, le complexe d'oxalate d'aluminium est converti en alumine fixant les particules réfractaires à la surface de l'élément de la cellule.
