Abstract
The present invention relates to a system that is to be installed between the rear solid axle and the wheel hubs of an ATV to prevent one of the wheels to slip when cornering with the vehicle. The system allow full torque to be applied to both rear wheels when driving strait forward and permit the rear outside wheel to turn faster then the axle when steering the vehicle therefore preventing unwanted ground damage from a slipping wheel.
Description
2 Specification Presently, most ATVs (All Terrain Vehicle) have a solid rear axle with one wheel at each end. A problem arise when the ATV is driven on a surface that must not be damage when the ATV turn, example: mowing a lawn with an ATV. I have found a way to retrofit the ATV with sprags clutch between the solid axle and each rear wheels. The sprags clutches allow for the axle to drive the wheels forward but permit the wheels faster then the axle, example: the outside wheel of a cornering vehicle.
Description of the drawing Fig. l represent the ATV rear axle differential.
Referring to Fig. 1 a typical ATV (1 ) with a rear solid axle (2) is retrofitted with a sprags clutch (3,4) in each rear wheels {5). The inner part of the sprags clutch (4) is mounted to the axle (2) and the outer part of the sprags clutch {3) is mounted to the wheel (5).
As the two parts of the sprags clutches (3,4) engage in only one direction of rotation, the wheels are free to turn faster then the axle (2) in the no-engaging direction of the sprags clutches.
Therefore when cornering, the outside wheel of the ATV (1 ) is free to turn faster then the inside wheel, preventing damage to the ground usualy cause by one or both wheels slipping while cornering. In order to reverse with an ATV equipped with this system, a 4X4 ATV or a separate reverse locking must be used.
