Abstract
A sorting apparatus for concrete products comprises a first conveyor to receive randomly arranged concrete products dispensed from a tumbler; the conveyor has a first speed; at least one additional conveyor is disposed parallel to the first conveyor and is adapted to receive from the first conveyor the sorted concrete products; the second conveyor has a speed greater than the first speed of the first conveyor. The apparatus may include a second conveyor on each opposite side of the first conveyor.
Description
TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Sorting device for concrete products FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention pertains to a device for sorting concrete products randomly dispensed from a tumbler.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Concrete products which are dispensed from a tumbler usually appear in a chaotic state. It is necessary to properly arrange them in order to adequately stack them on a wooden pallet. Many of these products have a dimension which varies in length.
OBJECTS AND STATEMENT OF THE INVENTION
The present invention provides for a device and a method for sorting and arranging concrete products, such as bricks, pavement stones, wall stones, or the like, in a more efficient and ergonomic manner.
The present invention, therefore, consists in a handling system which comprises a first conveyor of low speed on which are placed the products that are dispensed from a tumbler, and at least one additional conveyor having a speed higher than that of the first conveyor and located adjacent to the first conveyor.
In a preferred form of the invention, there may be provided a second conveyor on each opposite side of the first conveyor.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
In the appended drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a concrete sorting station in accordance with the present invention;
Figures 2 and 3 are top and side views of a conveyor used in the present invention; and Figures 4-8 are various views of the sorting station.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring to the drawings, the products which are dispensed in a jumbled arrangement from the tumbler are brought onto a first conveyor 10. The sorting operator located adjacent the conveyor slides the products from the first conveyor over to a second conveyor 12 while ensuring that they are brought to bear against a guide located along this second conveyor.
The speed V1 of the first conveyor 10 is such that the operator can easily grasp the concrete products; a speed of about 45 feet per minute is acceptable.
The speed V2 of the second conveyor 12 must be at least double the rate of the products being sorted, in order to enable the conveyor to free the sliding area for each product deposit. In fact, a speed of 120 feet per minute is an adequate speed in order to manage from 40 to 60 linear feet per minute.
The second conveyor 12 should have a low friction surface in order to enable the operator to easily slide the products. The height of the working platform of the operator must be at belt height in order to favour an ergonomic posture. The distance between the guide adjacent the high speed conveyor and the extremity of the working area of the low speed conveyor (usually in the center) must be such as to enable the operator to maintain his or her ergonomic position (about 20 to 27 inches).
Preferably, there are two high speed conveyors 12, 12' disposed adjacently parallel on either side of the low speed conveyor.
Each high speed conveyor 12, 12' is divided into three equal sections, A, B, and C (see Figure 3), which are equal to the length of the cube of stacked concrete products to be formed, and into an additional section D which is of variable length and which serves as a working and accumulation area.
Each section is driven independently and serves to separate the groups of products which are to be thereafter pushed 90 degrees to the cube forming station.
The last section A is also divided into equal subsections, A1, A2, A3 and A4.
A1 is the last section and is composed of freely rotatable rollers. Section A2 has a speed V3. Section A3 has a speed V4, while section A4 has a speed V5.
Speed V4 is substantially equal to V2, while V3 is equal to V4/2. V5 is equal to 1.5 V4.
Detecting means (not shown) are provided in section A to enable a reverse motion of the conveyor once the products have reached this section. The difference in speed of the various subsections A enable, in response to a signal from the detecting means, the products to move rearwardly so that they may be equally spaced from one another to thereby form a uniform cube length, even with products of varying lengths. Thus, a uniform length is essential in order to form a stable cube made up of various rows of products.
Finally, it is essential to push the products in a direction of 90 degrees with respect to the high speed conveyors in order to preserve a uniform length and a regular spacing in the direction of the cube forming station.
Although the present invention has been described hereinabove by way of preferred embodiments thereof, it can be modified, without departing from the spirit and nature of the subject invention as defined in the appended claims.
