Abstract

L'invention concerne la mesure de l'épaisseur d'un matériau à l'aide des techniques nucléaires. Plus particulièrement, elle concerne un dispositif et un procédé permettant de mesurer l'épaisseur de la paroi d'un tuyau depuis l'extérieur de celui-ci (70) à l'aide d'un détecteur annulaire (50), d'une collimation par détecteur conique concentrique (26) et d'un rayonnement gamma rétrodiffusé. Une source de rayons gamma (14), de préférence à une énergie de 279 KeV émise par le mercure 203, est collimatée en un faisceau crayon et bombardée perpendiculairement sur l'extérieur de la paroi du tuyau à mesurer. Le rayonnement à rétrodiffusion Compton venant de la paroi est mesuré par un détecteur de photons concentrique qui comporte de préférence un cristal, tel qu'un iodure de sodium, optiquement couplé à un seul tube photomultiplicateur. L'épaisseur du tuyau est déterminée à partir de la réponse du détecteur à l'aide d'une relation prédéterminée obtenue durant l'étalonnage du système. La collimation par détecteur conique concentrique est utilisée pour obtenir des mesures précises quand le tuyau est rempli de liquide.
