Abstract
The object of the invention is a method and equipment for binding grit or similar onto a road using heating as an aid.
After gritting, the ice surface is machined to become uneven and the gritted surface is heated strongly.

Description
~1~3517 A METHOD AND GRITTING EQUIPMENT
The object of the invention is a method and gritting equipment for causing grit to adhere to a road in such a way that heat is used as an aid.
As the salting of roads has decreased for environmental reasons, gritting has been resumed as a means of preventing slipperiness.
On heavily trafficked roads a problem arises due to the grit only remaining in place for a short time, because the airflow caused by traffic throws the grit to the side of the road. In order to reduce this, gritting equipment has been developed in which the mass of the grit is heated strongly, so that the hot particles adhere to the surface of the ice. It is in any case necessary to heat the grit, to that it does not arch in the reservoir. However, satisfactory results have not yet been achieved with the heating of grit. It is the intention of this invention to create a better method and equipment by means of which the gritting material, whether sand or grit, will adhere better to an icy road surface. The characteristic features of the invention are presented in the accompanying Patent Claims.
According to the invention the sand or grit is heated only once it is on the ground and the heating lasts for as long as the heated jacket travels over each point. In addition, the icy road surface is broken up with suitable members in order to create an uneven road surface, when the gritting material will adhere to it better.
In what follows the invention is illustrated by reference to the accompanying figures, which show one form of gritting equipment in accordance with the invention.
Figure 1 shows the heating and ice-machining unit of the grit-ting equipment.
Figure 2 shows the equipment seen from the side.
The heating and ice-machining unit 1 is located so as to be carried on a suitable trailer and consists of a jacket 4, inside of which is the chain crusher 9, 10 used as an ice- machining member 5. Combustion gases are blown into the jacket by means of ~lq3517 a burner 6 and air is blown into the jacket by a secondary air fan 7, when combustion takes place inside jacket 4 and is complete. The chain crusher consists of an axle 9, which is supported from the frame by means of a bearing 11 and is rotated by hydraulic motor 8. Several chains 10 are secured to the axle 9 and, when they strike the ice, grind open its surface so that the gritting material adheres better to the uneven surface.
In addition, the heating and ice-machining unit 1 includes an generator unit to provide power to the burner and the motor 8.
Where it is possible, power can also be taken from the tractor vehicle.
Figure 2 shows the equipment as a totality, which then consists of a heating and ice-machining unit 1 set on a trailer 3 which is pulled by a truck 2, at the back of which is a grit spreader 15. This is placed at the back of the platform. The tow-bar 17 of the trailer 3 is attached to the tow-hook 18 of the truck 2.
In the figure the trailer is shown only schematically in partial cross-section.
Flexible, e.g. rubber, flanges 8 are used at the lower edge of the jacket 4 of the heating and ice-machining unit 1, which limit the airflow escaping from inside the jacket 4.
