Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A twin-wire former for a paper machine with a first and a second wire, each forming a wire loop, and with a plurality of dewatering slats within the two wire loops.
The slats of the first wire bear on the inside surface of the first wire (first slats), and the slats of the second wire bear on the inside surface of the second wire (second slats). The slats are arranged in groups within suction boxes, each suction box being connectable to a vacuum. The suction boxes of the two wires are opposed, overlapping at least partly. Each suction box can be connected--indirectly or directly--to a vacuum, the vacuum being adjustable to the effect that the wire is always wetted by the wire water within the respective suction box.

Dieter Egelhof Volker Schmidt-Rohr `' "' "i`'`": "' TWIN-WIRE FORMER FOR A PAPER MACHINE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION - -The invention concerns a twin-wire former for a paper machine. Regarding the prior art, reference is made to the following documents: ;- s (1) DE-PS 68 28 94 (2) WO 91/01408 i~; -(3) US 5,045,153 (4) DE-PS 20 23 521 The invention described in the U.S. Patent 5,045,153 includes slats arranged in both wire loops. The slats ~ ;;, ;
within one wire loop are arranged so as to oppose the slats within the other wire loop. The slat~ of the one -~
and also the other group may be contained within suction ;
. , -boxes, since these apply a vacuum on the entire area of the slats in order to thereby enhance the dewatering.
The suction boxQs feature appropriate suction hookups acros~ which a vacuum is applied in order to remove the ~-,,~ . , ::
water from the boxes. In this removal of wire water, or filtrat-, the suction boxes are not, or only partly, ;~
filled with water.

direction. For that purpose, great efforts are undertaken to provide, especially in the area of sheet formation, i-e-, on the twin-wire former, all of the prereguisites for a good paper web quality in the above sense. Nonetheless, this has not yet been mastered completely.
Thus, the problem underlying the present invention i8 to provide a twin-wire former that meets the prerequisites for a paper web which is consistent in any respect. - -SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
This problem is solved by the combination of the features of the present invention. The present invention comprises, in one form thereof, a twin-wire former for a paper machine having a first and a second wire, each ~ ;
forming a wire loop, and with a plurality of dewatering slats within the two wire loops. The slats of the first wire bear on the inside surface of the first wire (first -~
slats), and the slats of the second wire bear on the inside surface of the second wire (second slats). The slats are arranged in groups within suction boxes, each suctionibox being connectable to a vacuum.' The sucti!on boxes of the two wires are opposed, overlapping at least partly. Each suction box can be connected--indirectly or directly--to a vacuum, the vacuum being adjustable to the effect that the wire is always wetted by the wire water wlthin the respective suction box. -'','`'~'''`'~

The inventors have recognized that the i afor~mentioned dewatering boxes during the operation of -the paper machine are not, or not completely, filled with wire water. The wire water level within ths suction box can fluctuate quite considerably during operation. There may be phases in which the level is nearly at the bottom of the box, and there may be such in which it more or less touches the wire. Also, the inventors have found ~`~
. ~
that such conditions entail heavily agitated water levels within the suction boxes and that the sheet that is in the process of being created is thereby washed out by the wire water splashing on it from below, thereby impoverishing the content of fillers and fines. Viewed , . , ,:
overall, all of these phenomena lead to disturbances in ;i . . .. . .
the sheet formation and thus consistency reduction in the , . . - .: :. -paper web being created.

Moreover, the inventors have recognized that the ;
. ~ , ,~, ~ ., .
interior of the suction box bordering on the wire should ~ i always be full of water, so that the wire is always "under water. N Hence, the wire should remain wettedalways uniformly, notably across the web width. The invention can bé'used both with hybrid formers and so-called gap formers. As the case may be, it may be ~`i;

important for the suction boxes of the one wire to oppose ~ `
those of the other wire, and at that, in such a fashion ; . : :. :::: , ,.,: ., that they overlap at least partly. It may be favorable ,,'""~

for the suction boxes on the one and on the other side of the dewatering section to be identical in shape.
The invention allows employment both with horizontal and vertical dewatering sections, but also with a dewatering section tilted relative to the horizontal.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will be explained more fully with the aid of the drawing, which in detail illustrates the following:
Fig. 1 shows schematically, viewed in side elevation, a twin-wire former with two wires 1, 2, each ~ ~
forming a wire loop. Fig. 2 shows the suction box in i ~;
greater detail.
Fig. 3 and 4 are vertical sections through the dewatering section of essentially horizontal arrangement, formed of the two wires 1 and 2. ~ -Figs. 5 and 6 show the invention being applied in a i ; ~, twin-wire former with an essentially vertical dewatering -~ -section . , D~TAI~ED ~ESCRI~ION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring now to the drawings, and in particular Fig. l,ithe lower of the two wires, namely wire 1, loops ~`;;

In Figs. 5 and 6, the invention is being applied in '`~' a twin-wire former with an essentially vertical dewatering section. Visible again are the two wires 1, 2, each forming an endless wire loop. Contained within the wire 1 is again a suction box 4 with dewatering slats 5 which can be forced elastically on the inside surface of wire 1. Contained within wire 2 is a '~
dewatering box 14 with dewatering slats 15 which are arranged in nonyielding fashion, and thus bear in a stationary manner on the inside surface of wire 1. ~ -Both suction boxes feature suction sockets 4.4 "~`;' ''~'' and 14.4, along with stand pipes 8 and 18.
