Abstract
ABSTRACT
A training urinal includes a free standing support supporting basin and a urinal back wall to drain into a conventional training commode. The commode slides in and out of position under the urinal so that it can be used for training bowel movements.

Description
, ~Q98~91 :: ~
The present invention relates to toilet training apparatus.
In the toilet training of young boys, it is often difficu1t for the children to control the direction of urination sufficiently when standing at a fu11 sized toilet. A
solution to this has been proposed in Jermann United States Patent 5,148,553, issued 22 September 1993. That patent discloses a urinal basin that is suspended from the side of a conventional toilet bowl. Because of the height of the unnal basin, well below the rim of -the toilet bowl, this unit can only be used by very small children. ~ -~
Another proposal is disclosed in Lewand~wski et al United States Patent 5,044,020, issued 3 September 1991. According to that proposal a wall support ispermanently anchored to a wall, a urinal shell is mounted on the wall support and a urinal proper is fitted into the shell. A permanently wal1-mounted urinal of this sort is inappropriate in many cases. Even if wall space for the unit is available, the unit is in most cases only in use for a rela~ively short time until the child is ready to use the regular toilet.
A secondary, although significant, disadvantage of the known proposals is that they make no provision for toilet training of bowel movements. Often this is done with a training commode, colloquially referred to as a "potty seat". This means that the bathroom is cluttered with two separate appliances, or the child is forced to use the full sized toilet.
The present invention has as its objective, the provision of a novel training urinal. Preferably the urinal is combined with a training commode.
According to one aspect of the present invçntion there is provided a urinal comprising:
- ~ ~

~`` - 2 - ~ ~ 9 ~
a free standing urinal component having a basin, an upright back wall extending upwardly from the basin and a drain in the basin; and a urine collection container removeably positioned below the basin to receive urine from the drain. -The unit is free standing, so that its height can be set to accommodate most if not all toilet training boys. Collecting the urine in a separate container makes it much ;
more convenient to drain the collected urine into the toilet than if the entire urinal basin and associated components must be manipulated for this purpose, as is the case with both of the prior art units referred to above.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a combined training urinal and commode comprising:
a commode, including a seat and a chamber pot;
a urinal basin with a drain;
a back wall extending upwardly from a back side of the basin; and urinal support means supporting the urinal basin and back wa11 above the commode, with the drain positioned above the chamber pot. ;
By using a commode as the collection container, there is provided a compact, convenient combination that can also be used for toilet training with bowel movements. The urinal is preferably free standing, with the commode being a slide-in fit under the basin.
In the accompanying drawings which illustra~e an exemplary embodiment of the present invention:

Figure 2 is an isometric view of the apparatus of Figure l with the commode withdrawn; and ~ -Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view along line 3-3 of Figure l.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated a urinal combination lO that includes urinal component 12 and a urine collector component in the -form of acommode 14.
The urina1 component has a base 16 including opposite sides 18 and a back section 20. The base has an open front 22 for receiving the commode 14. Above the base is a urinal shell 24 that defines, above the base, a basin 26 and a back waU 28 that extends upwardly from the back of the basin to the top of the shelf. The back wall is concavely curved from side to side to match the contour of the basin.
At the lowest point in the basin is a drain 30 that is positioned above the commode 14 when instaUed as shown in Figures l and 3.
The commode includes a commode support 32 that carries an open seat 34 generaUy in the configuration of a toilet seat, but in this case smaUer to accommodate the smaller stature of a child using the commode. The commode support 32 also carries a chamber pot 36 positioned below the seat in the conventional way. The charnber pot may be removed from the commode to be emptied into a toilet. When the commode is inserted in place below the urinal basin, the drain of the basin is posi~ioned directly above the chamber pot.
The combination may be completed with a spray bottle for spraying water or ~ ~
other cleaning liquid into the urinal or chamber pot after they have been used.~ ~ ;
The urinal is a free standing unit that does not require fastening to a wall. Itis of an appropriate height for use by most if not aU ma1e children undergoing toilet , ............. , - . -- , ... .. . ~, , , ". . --.. .. --.

training. The combination of the unnal with a commode as the urine collection component provides a combined toilet training apparatus that a child can use for both urination and bowel movements.
The various components of the apparatus are preferab1y molded from plastic material, without seams.
While one embodiment of the present invention has been described in the foregoing, it is to be understood that other embodiments are possible within the scope of the invention. The invention is to be considered limited so1e1y by the scope of the appended c1aims.
