Abstract

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

The disclosure herein describes a tobacco chopper which comprises a body having an elongated chamber to receive tobacco leaves or shreds therein and a chopping plate pivotally mounted at the exit end of the chamber. The plate is provided with a handle allowing to be moved into a series of reciprocating strokes and a blocking surface which covers the exit end of the chamber so as to block the tobacco as it is compacted in the chamber. A blade is mounted to the blocking surface for cutting the compacted tobacco as it is forced through the chamber by a pusher implement.

Description

20~31 FIE~D OF THE INVENTION
The present invention pertains to a chopping assembly for providing cigarette or pipe tobacco.

BACRGROUND OF THE INVENTION
To provide tobacco for cigarettes and pipes, leaves are selected and their stems removed to form half-leaves which are then piled one on top of the other to a given thickness. This pile is folded in two and a roll is made of about 1 inch in diameter. At present, these rolls are placed on a trimming bed where a knife is used to cut the rolls into shreds. This is a cumbersome operation with less than satisfactory results in the chopped tobacco obtained.

OBJECT8 AND STATEMENT OF_THE INVENTION
The present invention pertains to a tobacco chopping assembly which overcomes problems of presently used chopping operations.

This is achieved by providing a tobacco chopper which comprises:
- a rigid body defining an elongated chamber to receive tobacco leaves or shreds therein; chamber having opposite entry and exit open ends;

.. ... . . . . . . .

~: : - :: : : ; : :

, 20~31 - a chopping plate pivotally mounted to the body frontwardly of the exit end, the chopping plate including:
a) a handle portion allowing the plate to be moved into a series of reciprocating strokes;
b) a main portion shaped to cover the exit end to thereby block the exit end when tobacco leaves or shreds are loaded and compacted into the chamber; the main portion displaying a slot allowing chopped tobacco to fall on a nearby surface; and c) a blade secured to the main portion for cutting compacted tobacco at the exit end.

In one form of the invention, the body has a pair of opposite elongated vertical supports which rest on the nearby surfaceO Edge engaging projections are provided at one end of these supports to stabilize the chopper on the surface during a chopping operation.

To compact the tobacco leaves or shreds in the chamber, a pusher implement is used, having a shape corresponding substantially to that of the elongated chamber.

Other objects and further scope of applicability of the present invention will become apparent from the detailed description given hereinafter.
It should be understood, however, that this detailed description, while indicating preferred embodiments of the invention, is given by way of illustration only, since various changes and modifications within the spirit and scope of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art.

IN THE D~AWINGS
Figure 1 is a perspective exploded view of a tobacco chopper assembly made in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional elevation view showing tobacco being compacted in the chamber of the chopper;
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate the two extreme positions of the chopping plate.

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring to figure 1, there is shown a tobacco chopper assembly which comprises a main body, generally denoted 10, a chopping plate 12 and a tobacco pusher implement 14.

The body 10 defines a hollow cylindrically shaped chamber 16 having a tobacco entry end 18 and a ,- : . : . .

tobacco exit end 20. The body includes a pair of opposite side supports 22 and 24 having their respective lower edge adapted to rest on a table having an horizontal surface 26 and a side surface 28 (see figure 2). The rear end of the supports, below the entry end 18 of the chamber, displays a downward projection 30, 32 (see figure 3) which abuts the upper edge of the vertical wall 28 of the surface on which the tobacco chopper is positioned for use.

The end of the body adjacent the exit end 20 of the chamber is defined by a flanged wall 34 having a rearwardly extending cylindrical extension 35 with a central bore 38.

The chopping plate 12 consists of a main surface 40 to which is integrally formed a handle 42 projecting sideways. The plate has a hole 44 which is axially aligned with the bore 38 of the body when mounted to the body by means of a bolt 46 and a nut 48 in a manner which allows plate 40 to be manually pivoted relative to the body 10. An elongated slot 50 extends on the plate 40. The plate has a trapezoidal recess to receive a corresponding shaped blade 52 which is detachably mounted to the plate by means of a holder 54, bolt 56 and nut 58, the bolt extending through respective openings 60, 62 of the holder 54 and the plate 40.

The pusher implement 14 defines a hollow cylindrical body 64 corresponding substantially in shape to that of the elongated chamber 16; it is provided with a flanged open end 66.

The reciprocating movement of the plate 40 between the position shown in figure 3 and the position shown in figure 4 is accomplished through a pivotal movement about the axis of bolt 46. This stroke is limited between the supports 22 and 24 by a small pin 70 projecting on the rear surface of the plate 40 which, on one side, engages a recess 72 (see figure 1) on the front wall of the body and, on the opposite side contacts the inner face 74 of the leg support 24. To arrive at this latter position, the plate 40 has a chamfered corner 76 which lies horizontally along the horizontal portion 26 of the table.

In use, tobacco 80 in the form of leaves or shreds, is loaded into chamber 16 and compacted by the pusher implement 14. The compacted tobacco bears against the rear face of plate 40. Then, by a series of successive reciprocating movements (by manually operating the handle 42), the compacted tobacco is chopped by the blade 52 and slides through slot 50 to the pile of chopped tobacco 82. The rounded top wall of the body allows the user to position one hand thereover to stabilize the body on the table during use, his - :

stabilizing action being further assisted by projections 30 and 32 of the supports abutting the vertical top edge of the table.

By making the body, the chopping plate and the pusher implement of an injection molded plastic material, the entire tobacco chopper is light and washable. Also, by making the blade removably detachable to the chopping plate, tar which may be found between moving parts can easily be scraped of f.

Although the invention has been described above in relation to one specific form, it will be evident to a person skilled in the art that it may be modified and refined in various ways. It is therefore wished to have it understood that the present invention should not be limited in scope, except by the terms of the following claims.
