Abstract

A method of making a fiber preform for constituting a reinforcing fabric of a part made of composite material, the method comprising forming one-directionalfiber sheets, superposing the sheets with pairs of adjacent sheets having different directions, and needling together the superposed sheets, wherein sheets are used that are made up of elements which are formed by assembling together mutually parallel discontinuous filaments or fibers substantially without twisting with cohesion between the fibres or filaments being provided by covering by means of a yarn of fugitive material.

Claims (13)

1. A method of making a fiber preform for constituting a reinforcing fabric of a part made of composite material, the method comprising forming one-directional fiber sheets, superposing the sheets with pairs of adjacent sheets having different directions, and needling together the superposed sheets, wherein sheets are used that are made up of elements which are formed by assembling together mutually parallel discontinuous filaments or fibers substantially without twisting with cohesion between the fibres or filaments being provided by covering by means of a yarn of fugitive material.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the sheets are made of slivers.
3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the sheets are made of yarns formed by non-twisted discontinuous fibers.
4. A method according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of sheets are needled together directly to form a preform of relatively small thickness.
5. A method according to claim 4, wherein the needling density per unit area lies in the range 20 punches/cm2 to 300 punches/cm2.
6. A method according to claim 1, wherein a plurality of sheets are pre-needled to form a basic fabric, after which the preform is made by needling together a plurality of plies or layers, at least some of which are formed by said basic fabric.
7. A method according to claim 6, wherein, prior to pre-needling, the sheets are assembled together by means of a bonding yarn.
8. A method according to claim 7, wherein the bonding yarn is made of a fugitive material.
9. A method according to claim 7, wherein the bonding yarn is a yarn identical to that constituting the sheets.
10. A method according to claim 6, wherein the density per unit area of the pre-needling in the basic structure lies in the range 5 punches/cm2 to 40 punches/cm2.
11. A method according to claim 1, wherein sheets are used that are constituted by elements formed from fibers of a material selected from carbon, ceramics, and precursors therefor.
12. A preform constituting a fiber reinforcing fabric for a composite material part, the preform being made by the method according to claim 5, and having a thickness of less than 15 mm.
13. A part in the form of a rigid foil or web of thermo-structural composite material, and comprising a preform according to claim 12.
