Description
BAC~GROUND OF THE I~VERIIO~
In the preparation of tobacco leaves for use in cigarettes or as pipe tobacco, an important step is the shredding of the leaves. Tobacco shredding devices have been known for many years and include systems with reciprocating straight blades and systems with rotary blades. Such devices are described in U.S. Patents 4,213,468, 3,659,620 and 3,128,775 as well as in recent Canadian Patent 863,667 and in early Canadian Patents 161,061, 147,598~ 130,053, 67686, 32368, 30093 and 7678.
With the current very hi8h cost of tobacco products, there is a revived interest in individuals simply purchasing dried tobacco leaves and preparing their own cigarette tobacco or pipe tobacco. This is done be shredding the dried tobacco leaves to a particular shred size depending on whether it is to be used in cigarettes or in pipes.
It is the obeject of the present invention to provide a very simple and inexpensive, yet highly effective and consistent, device for shredding tobacco leaves.
SU~X~RY OF THE INVERIIOH
This invention relates to a manually operable tobacco shredding device having a base portion, preferably in the form of a thick board or a container, Oll which is supported a shredding mechanism comprised of a fixed cutter bed portion formed of a plurality of laterallv 2 20~1522 spaced and parallel fixed members. These blade members are mounted adjacent, the ends thereof on transverse front and rear support members with spacers between the fixed blades. A pivotal cutter mechanism is also mounted on the rear transverse support member for pivotal movement thereon.
This pivotal cu~ter assembly includes a relatively strong and rigid framework with blades mounted therein for engagement with the fixed blades of the blade bed. These pivotal blades are mounted for pivotal movement at one end thereof on the rear transverse support member for the ~ fixed blades with spacers such that the pivotal blades interlock in close engagement with the fixed blades. The ends of the pivoting blades which are remote from the pivot are rigidly mounted within the framework such that when the pivotal assembly is swung down onto the blade bed, the pivotal blades mesh snugly with the fixed blades along the entire lengths thereof.
Thus, in operation, the pivotal blade assembly is swung upwardly into the open position and a dried tobacco leaf is placed on the fixed blade bed.
Then by simply swinging the pivotal blade assembly downward onto the fixed blade assembly, the leaves resting on the fixed bed are shredded and drop through the fixed blades. If the fixed blades are mounted on top of a container, the shredded tobacco falls into the container.
According to a particularly preferred embodiment, at least one of each pair of meshing fixed blade and pivotal blade has a hollow ground face to thereby provide a very sharp cutting edge. This permits a very clean shredding of tobacco leaves.
The spacing of the blades can be varied easily depending on the fineness or coarseness of the tobacco shreds to be formed.

3 2081~22 A particularly preferred embodiment of this invention is illustrated by the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an isometric view of the tobacco shredding assembly of the invention, and Figure 2 is a plan view of the assembly of Figure 1.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2, the device includes a retaining wall 11 that is attached to the end bracket 12 which retains the fixed blade assembly at one end. At the other end of the device, end bracket 13 is for mounting the pivotal blade assembly to the base.
Bolts or rods 14A, 14B and 14C extend laterally across the blades, with the bolt 14A being at the front of the device, bolt 14B
being at the rear of the device, and bolt 14C being at the top or handle end of the pivotal blade assembly. A series of fixed cutter blades 15 extend longitudinally, in the horizontal plane, between the bolts 14A and 14B. These L-shaped blades 15 are parallel to each other and are laterally spaced along bolt 14A and 14B by means of spacing washers 16.
A pivotal blade assembly 20 is also mounted on rear support bolt 14B. This assembly consists of rigid side members 21, and a transverse bolt or rod 14Cfor retaining the blades. The pivotal blades 23 are mounted across between bolts 14B and 14C with each pivotal blade 23 being in close engagement with its mating fixed blade 15. This close mating between the two sets of blades is achieved by means of further spacing washers 16 on the bolt 14C.
