Abstract

ABSTRACT
Fresh Air Snorkel For Divers A fresh air snorkel comprising a mouthpiece and an air tube, the air tube being divided into a separate inlet tube and a separate outlet tube, each of the tubes being provided with at least one, one-way valve in its free end, which valves are mounted so that fresh air enters only the inlet tube upon inhalation and stale air enters only the outlet tube upon exhalation.

Description

FRESH AIR SNORKEL FOR DIVERS

The invention relates to a fresh air snorkel which makes it easier for a diver to breathe.
A conventional snorkel has only one tube, resulting in the diver inhaling used air remaining in the tube.
This causes the result that the diver is very quickly exhausted and therefore has to take a relatively deep breath to obtain fresh air.
Using a fresh air snorkel of the present invention allows the diver not to have to breath so deeply to obtain fresh air, and thus the diver is not so quickly exhausted. The present fresh air snorkel can be made twice as long as a conventional snorkel and thus the diver does not need to breath deeper to obtain fresh air.
According to the invention, there is provided a fresh air snorkel comprising a mouthpiece and an air tube, the air tube being divided into a separate inlet tube and a separate outlet tube, each of the tubes being provided with at least one, one-way valve in its free end, which valves are mounted so that fresh air enters only the inlet tube upon inhalation and stale air enters only the outlet tube upon exhalation.
In the accompanying drawing which is used to illustrate this invention, Figure 1 illustrates side view, partly in section of a fresh air snorkel according to the invention, and Figure 2 illustrates a cross-section of one-way valves in each of an inlet and an outlet tube.

FRESH AIR SNOR~æL FOR Dl V~;RS

In Figure 1 there is shown a snorkel which includes a mouthpiece 3~ connected via a middle section 7 to a divided portion 4, which is divided into two separate air tubes 5, 6, one inlet air-tube 5 and one outlet air-tube 6. These are throughout their whole lengths arranged in close parallel relationship to each other. Both tubes are approximately the same length. In the open end opposite the mouthpiece is arranged one-way valves 1, 2. These valves are constructed so that one valve opens upon inlet breathing, and the other opens upon outlet breathing. Figure 2 shows that the valves are fitted in the free end of the tubes but other arrangements are possible. For example the valves can be fitted in the opposite end, at 4, not shown in the figure. It is also possible to place several valves in each tube, for example one valve fitted in both ends in each tube.
While using the fresh air snorkel, the diver may continuously hold his mouth closed around the mouthpiece, while fre~h air and stale air may pass through the mouthpiece.
By arranging the tubes close to each other, it is possible for another person, in an emergency situation, to close his mouth over both tubes at the same time, and blow knowing which tube is the inlet air tube.
It is also within the scope of this invention to arrange the two tubes directly connected to the mouthpiece without the middle-piece, although this is not shown in the drawings.

THE EMBODIMENTS OF THE INVENTION IN WHICH THE EXCLUSIVE
PROPERTY OR PRIVILEGE IS CLAIMED ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS:
1. A fresh air snorkel comprising a mouthpiece and an air tube, the air tube being divided into a separate inlet tube and a separate outlet tube, each of the tubes being provided with at least one, one-way valve in its free end, which valves are mounted so that fresh air enters only the inlet tube upon inhalation and stale air enters only the outlet tube upon exhalation.
2. A fresh air snorkel as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the inlet and outlet tubes are arranged in close parallel relationship throughout the length of the air tube.
3. A fresh air snorkel as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the inlet and outlet tubes are arranged in close parallel relationship throughout the length of the air tube, but commence at a point which is spaced from the mouthpiece.
4. A fresh air snorkel as claimed in Claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein the inlet and outlet tubes are formed separately.
5. A fresh air snorkel as claimed in Claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein the inlet and outlet tubes and the air tubes are integrally formed.
6. A fresh air snorkel as claimed in Claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein one valve is provided in each of the inlet and outlet tubes.
