Description
C
C~ntainer with Screw-fit~inq or Push-fittinq CaP
The invention relates to a container of glass, ceramics or synthetic rnaterial with a screw-fitting or push-fitting cap, in which the container opening located beneath the cap is closed by a tear-off or tear-away foil membrane which is sealed on the edge of the opening by means of a sealing layer and is provided with a tear-off tag for tearing off or tearing away.
Containers with such a foil sealing membrane are known for use with foodstuffs and luxury consumables, such as coffee (e.g. EP 0 148 527).
With such containers, the sealing foil membrane is provided for sealing the container opening to retain the aroma and moreover as a guarantee of originality for the container contents. For sealing they are provided with a sealing layer of synthetic material.
The sealing of the foil membrane at the edge of the container opening is achieved in practice in kwo di~ferent ways. One method is to seal the foil membrane placed on the edge of the container opening by pressure and heat before applying the cap. Xn the other method, the sealing is perorrned with the cap in place by inductive heating of the seal layer, for which purpose the foil membrane has to be provided with a metal layer, the necessary application pressure being exerted by the cap.
s~
The metal layer is normally desirable in any event for sealing the aroma in and normally is a component of the membrane.
Inductive sealing has the advantage that it can be carried out as a part of the filling process with the ~dp already in place and within a very short sealing period.
Since the known rnetal Eoil rnembranes often have a tear-off tag punched on or surface rnounted, which likewise has the same foil construction as the membrane itself or is forrned integrally with this, the problem exists with these membranes that during inductive sealing the metallic tear-off tag affects induced eddy currents in such manner that non-uniforrn heating of the sealing layer and thus non-uniform and therefore unsatisfactory sealing takes place.
Inductive sealing of containers with foil membranes has previously been troublefree only with such containers in which the foil membranes have no tear-off tag. Such a tear-off tag is however desirable for rapid and simple opening of the originality seal.
As a result of the above described problems, foil membranes with tear-off tags have previously been sealed in such manner that the tear-off tag was always positioned at a particular location of the container opening or the opening periphery. For troublefree sealing, induction coi.ls were here required which took account oE the rnetal aggregation in the region o~ the tear-oE tag and the resulting modified current flow. rrhese measures are expensi.ve and cost intensive.

2~$';~
An object of the invention is to provide a container having a foil membrane which is constructed such that, in spite of the provision of a tear-off tag, troublefree inductive sealing is possible in a simple and inexpensive manner. According to the invention 'che foil Membrane is substantially metal free at least in the region of its tear-off tag, thus being constructed without a rnetal layer. Such a foil rnernbrane does not disturb inductive sealing in spite of its tay.
Thus, in place oE a rnetal foil laminate as a sealing rnembrane with an integral tear-off tag, a substantially metal-Eree foil is used as a foil mernbrane as an originality seal, which is sealed on the edge of the container opening with the aid of a separate discoid metal foil or a discoid metal foil mounted on the foil membrane. sy the expression "substantially metal-free" a construction of the tear-off tag of the foil membrane is to be understood which does not give rise to any distortion of the induction field which would disturb the sealing function.
In an advantageous exemplary embodiment of the container according to the invention, the foil membrane can be constructed together with its tear-off tag to be substantially rnetal free. The rnetal layer necessary for inductive sealing can in this connection be formed by a discoid rnetal foil arranged above or beneath the Eoil rnembrane, the overall shape of the rnetal foil being adapted to the container opening, i.e. Eollowing the edge oE the container opening and not deviating substantially 2 ~
from this. This is because only such a metal foil ensures uniform metal mass over the entire region of the edge of the container opening and therefore leads to uniform heating of the sealing layer of the foil membrane and thus to uniform sealing. In this connection, the discoid metal foil can be arranged in the container cap, being previously fixed with a few spots of adhesive.
~ further exernplary ernbodirnent oE the container according to the invention is possible in which the oil rnembrane is constructed to be substantially metal free only in the region of the tear-off tag, whilst in the rernaining regions in which its shape is eY.actly adapted to the container opening, it forms a laminate with the Metal foil. This metal foil does not affect inductive sealing in the region of the tear-off tag since it is absent in the tear-off tag and thus does not deviate substantially from the shape of the container periphery.
The foil membrane can consist of paper or synthetic material such as polyester, polycarbonate or the like or also of cellophane foil. If it is connected to a metal layer in one of the two above described exemplary embodiments, it can for this purpose be larninated, vapour deposited or bronzed, for exatnple with alurninium. The sealing layers, which can serve for the sealing of the foil mernbrane or the rnetal layer on the edge of the container opening or for sealing oE the metal layer on the unmetallized layer oE the rnetal foil, can consist of sealable synthetic rnaterial and be laminated on, painted on or applied by extrusion coating.
~3~bJ ~
In the container according to the invention, kherefore the foil membrane can be a synthetic foil or paper or cellophane foil which is sealable or provided with a sealable coating and has one or more tear-off tags, which can be applied across the container opening in arbitrary fashion without particular orientation and nevertheless enable rapid and sirnple induction sealing during the Eilling process without a special induction sealing head being necessary for this purpose.
In Figs. 1-3 o the drawing, three diEEerent advantageous exernplary ernbod;ments of the container according to the invention are illustrated in vertical cross-section through the container opening with mounted lid, and will be described in more detail in the following.
In all three exemplary embodiments, there is provided a container whose container opening l is closable by a screw cap 3 of synthetic material, metal or the like applied on the container edge 2.
In the exemplary embodiment according to Fig.
l, a layer 4 of cardboard is inserted in the cap 3 lying against the base of the cap and covering this, on which layer 4 an aluminiurn layer 5 is provided, which if desired can be provided with a corrosion protection layer 6 of synthetic material.
Below these layers is located the foil rnernbrane 7 with tear-off tag 8 which consists of synthetic material, e.g. polyethyleneterephthalate or paper and is provided across its entire side facing the edge of the container opening l, including the tear-off tag 8, with a heat sealing layer 9 on a synthetic basis, e.g. a therrnoplastic ionomeric resin. By rneans of ?J ~
this heat sealing layer 9, the foil mernbrane 8 is sealed in an inductive manner by means of the aluminium layer 5 onto the edge 2 of the container opening 1. After -tear off of the foil membrane 7 with its sealing layer 9 with the aid of the tear-off tay 8, the laminate inserted in the container lid 3 and forrned of the cardboard layer ~, the aluminium layer 5 and the corrosion protection layer 6 serves as a secondary seal for the container.
ln the exernplary embodirnent illustrated in Fig.
2, this secondary seal located in the cap 3 is formed only by the cardboard layer ~ and the protection layer 6. Beneath this laminate is located the non-metallic foil membrane 13 extending across the container opening 1 and having a tear-off tag 8 formed thereon, on the underside of which membrane is sealed an aluminium layer 11 by means of a sealing layer 10, which aluminium layer 11 is adapted in its shape to the shape and size of the periphery 2 of the container opening, i.e. follows its edge and does not extend beyond this edge as does the tear-off tag 8.
On the lower side of the aluminium layer 11 is applied a further sealing layer 12 with which the aluminiurn layer 11 connected to the non-metal foil mernbrane 13 is sealed onto the edge 2 of the container opening 2. Since also in this exemplary embodiment the foil membrane with the tear-off tag cons.ists of paper or synthetic rnaterial and therefore is rnetal free, troublefree sealing in the induction process is possible in spite of the tear-off tag 8, I'he tear~off tag 8 is, in this exernplary embodiment, Eolded onto the upper surface of the foil mernbrane and thus extends between the foil membrane and the cardboard-synthetic rnaterial laminate inserted into the cap.

ln the exernplary embodirnent illustrated in Fig.
2, this secondary seal located in the cap 3 is formed only by the cardboard layer ~ and the protection layer 6. 2 ~
In the exemplary embodiment illustrated in Fig.
3, just as in the exemplar~ embodiment according to Fig. 2, a secondary seal is inserted into the cap 3 in the form of a laminate consisting of a cardboard layer 4 and a synthetic layer 6. The foil membrane originality seal is formed by a non-metallic foil rnembrane 1~ with a tear-off tag 15, which is sealed by rneans of a sealing layer 16 on the edge 2 of the container opening 1.
