Description

F.N. 44791 CAN 8A
21~9979 The Coverinq_ ~ Sp:Liced Cable Joints Back~round of the Invention l. Field o~ the Invention This invention relates to the coveriny of spliced cable joints. More particularly, it relates to a method of covering a spliced cable and to a kit for covering a spliced cable.
2. Description o~ the Prior Art Spliced cables have been covered by shrinkable lo elastomeric sleeve$ such as described in U.S. Patent No.
3,515,798 supported initially in its stretched condition on a removable core. Upon removal of the core the elasticity of the sleeve caused it to shrink down upon the spliced cables, which could be pre-coated in the splice area, ~or example with a priming or water-proofing coating or a wrapping of adhesive tape~
Summary of the Invention In accordance with the present invention there i5 provided a method o~ covering a spliced cable which has a plurality o~ conductors t:hat are joined together at a splice region, which include~
covering the splice region with a mastic layer;
covering the mastic layer with a per~orated material;
sliding a pre-stretched rubber sleeve and core arrangement o~er the perforated material: and removing the core so that the sleeve contracts onto the per~orated material and adheres to the mastic via the psr~orAtions.
The mastic and the perforated material may be supplied in strip ~orm, and the mastic and th~ perforated material may then be wound around the splice region.
Conveniently, the mastic and the material may be supplied as rolls, the mastic having a strip of paper to impede adjacent layers in the roll adhering to one another.
Although both the mas~ic and the perforated material are wound around the splice region, the mastic may be wound 2~ 39~

in a non-overlapping manner whereas the perforated material is preferably wound around in an overlapping manner.
The perforated material may be a net-like material and may be of a suitable synthetic plastic material.
The invention extends to a kit for covering a spliced cabla, which includes a roll o~ mastic strip;
a roll of perforated strip material; and a pre-stretched rubber slee~e on a removable core.
It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that other techniques utilized in splicing cables may also be used. Thus, the splice region may be filled with a suitable putty once the conductors have been jointed and before the mastic is applied.
Brief Desaription of the Drawir~
The invention is now described, by way of an example, wikh re~erence to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows schematically, a partly sectioned view o~ a cable ~oint that has been covered using the method of and with a kit in accordance with the invention.
Figures 2 to 5 illustrate the successive steps in covering the joint; and Figure 6 shows a kit in accordance with the invention.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a covered ~oint in a cable is designated generally by reference numeral 10. Two cable portions 12 and 14 are joined together at a splice region 16. The cable 14 has insulated conductors 18 which are joined together as at 20~ The splice region 16, between the ends of the cable portions 12 and 14, is filled with a suitable putty 22 that is _3_ 2~9~
rubber based.
The spliced region 16 and adjacent end sections of the cable portions 12 and 14 ara covered with a layer 24 of mastic. The mastic is rubber based and is obtainable from a company by khe name of Diversified Polymer Products (Pty) Ltd. of South Africa. The mastic layer 24, in turn, is covered with a layer of perforated material, for example, polyPthylens net 26 which, in turn, is covered by a rubber sleeve 28.
Referring to Figure 6, a kit for covering a joint in a cable is designated generally by reference numeral 30. The kit includes the rubber sleeve 28 in a pre-stretched form, the sleeve 2~ being supported in its pre-stretched state by a core 30. The core 30 is removable and is formed from a flexible plastic strip 32 which is in the form of a coil with adjacent turns of the coil being frangibly secured to one another. One end of the strip 32 passes internally ~rom one end where it constitutes the first turn, out through the other end so that by pulling the exposed ~ree end 34 the coil 30 is unwound and tha sleeve 28 collapses. The kit 30 further include~ a roll 36 o~ the mastic with a length of paper 38 that is suitably coated and ~which is interleaved with the mastic 24 to inhibit adjacent layers of the mastic adhering to one another. Finally, the kit 30 includes a roll 40 of the polyethylene net 26.
Referring now to Figures 2 ~o 5, the manner in which the joint is covered is shown. Thus, referring initially to Figure 2, it will be seen that the sleeve 28 and its core 30 are first passed over one of the cable portions 12, with the free end 34 projecting on either side, in this case on the side of the joint. ~he conductors ~8 are ~oined and the splice region filled with the putty 22.
Referring further to Figure 3, it will be seen that the mastic 2~ is applied by unwinding the roll 36, separating the paper strip 38 from the mastic 24 and 7~

winding the mastic 24 over the end sections and the splice region 16. The mastic 24 is wound such that adjacent edges tou~h to pr~vide a smooth surf~ce.
Once the mastic 24 has been applied, the net 26 is then wound onto the mastic 24, th~ roll 40 being unwound. It will be noted that the net 26 is applied in an overlapping manner. The net 26 is wound from the end of the mastic remote from the sleeve 28 so that the exposed edge of the net strip 26 ~aces away from the core 30 and in the same direction as that in which the core strip 32 is pulled, to minimize the possibility of the core strip 32 catching on the net 26.
Finally referring to Figure 5, it will be seen that the core 30 with the sleeve 28 thereon is slid over the net 36 and the core strip 32 is pulled in the direction of arrow 42 so that the core 30 is unwound and the sleeve 28 collapses tightly onto the net layer 26.
Because the net layer 26 is per:Eorated, the sleeve 28 causes the mastic 24 to flow th:rough the per~orations and to adhere with the sleeve 28.
By means of the invention, a much stronger covering is provided for the jo:int, which is resistant to scu~fing, dragging and tearing and is also substantially waterproof even if the sleeve is slightly torn.
