Abstract

For retaining bank notes in bundles 14 the invention provides a flexible strip 10 which is wound around the bank note bundle so that it overlaps. Adhesive 12 is provided on one side adjacent one end of the overlapping surfaces of the strip. The adhesive is of the kind which will adhere to a surface but which can be separated from the surface with a force which is less than that required to tear the material of the strip. The strip may be made of paper, and may have a tag to assist in removal of the strip from the bundle. The strip may be colourcoded to indicate the denomination and/or the number of bank notes in the bundle. <IMAGE>

Description

BANK NOTE BUNDLE RETAINER This invention relates to a device for retaining bank notes in a bundle.
It is normal for banks, and like organisations that handle large quantities of bank notes, to collect the notes into bundles of like denomination. The notes in each bundle are normally held together by an endless band of paper. It is sometimes quite difficult to insert a bundle of notes into such an endless band, particularly if the notes are old and do not form a neat or compact bundle.
This present invention has been made with the aim of dealing with this problem.
According to the invention there is provided a device for retaining bank notes in a bundle comprising a flexible strip having a length which is sufficient to encircle a bundle of bank notes and overlap itself, adhesive on at least a part of one or both adjacent of the surfaces that overlap when the strip is wound around a bank note bundle, said adhesive being such as to hold the strip around the bundle but being separable by application of a separating force which is less than the force required to tear the material of the strip.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the material of the flexible strip is paper. Preferably the adhesive is applied only to one or both of the surfaces that will overlap when the strip is arranged around a bundle of bank notes. The dimensions of the flexible strip may be chosen having regard to the size of the bank notes that form the bundle. In the United Kingdom where bank notes of different denominations are of different sizes, therefore, different lengths of flexible strip may be needed. If desired the strips may be colour coded to indicate the denomination and/or number of the notes in the bundle.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Fig.l is a perspective view of a flexible strip; and Fig.2 shows the strip of Fig.l arranged around a bundle of bank notes.
Referring to the drawing a flexible strip of paper 10 is of generally rectangular shape. Adhesive 12 of
the kind used in so-called "post it"notes is provided on one surface adjacent one end of the strip.
In order to secure a bundle of bank notes 14 the strip is wound around the bundle as shown in Fig.2 so that the ends overlap. The strip is arranged so that the adhesive area 12 is in contact with the other overlapping end of the strip.
It will be apparent that the length of the strip must be chosen having regard to the size of the bank note bundle that is to be secured. It is important that there should be an overlap of the strip when it is in position around the bundle. The size of the overlap is not critical provided it is sufficient to hold the bundle together. Preferably the adhesive is only located on the strip such that it will be disposed within the overlap when the strip is in place around the bundle of bank notes and thus adhesive will not, in this case, contact the bank notes themselves or be exposed on the exterior of the strip. The strip may be pre-cut to the desired length or may be cut or otherwise separated by the user from a reel. The strip can be applied manually around a bundle of bank notes or can be mechanically applied, for example with the use of suitably adapted conventional equipment for applying strong or adhesive tape to a package.
The strip can be readily removed from the bundle by peeling apart the overlapping section. If desired a tag can be provided to assist in that operation. The tag can be formed quite simply by providing that the adhesive does not extend right to the end of the flexible strip.
The invention is not restricted to the above described embodiment and many variations can be made.
For example the adhesive may be provided over a greater length of the strip or even over the whole length. In that case the strip will be adhered not only to itself but also to the exposed parts of the bank notes, thus making the bundle more secure.

Claims (6)

A device for retaining bank notes in a bundle, comprising a flexible strip having a length which is sufficient to encircle a bundle of bank notes and overlap itself, adhesive on at least a part of one or both adjacent surfaces that overlap when the strip is wound around a bank note bundle, said adhesive being such as to hold the strip around the bundle but being separable by application of a separating force which is less than the force required to tear the material of the strip.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the flexible strip material is paper.
3. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the adhesive is provided on one of the surfaces that overlap when the strip is arranged around a bundle of bank notes.
4. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the strip is colour coded to indicate the denomination and/or number of bank notes in the bundle.
5. A device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein a tag is provided on the strip to assist removal from a bundle of bank notes.
6. A device for retaining bank notes in a bundle substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
